‘Lilo & Stitch' live-action sequel is on the way from Disney

Get ready, a live-action 'Lilo & Stitch 2' is a go at Disney. The studio tapped its favorite blue alien experiment to share the news Thursday on social media. Fans of the film associate June 26 — or 6/26 — with Stitch, who is known as Experiment 626 until Lilo gives him a real name. The announcement is unsurprising. The live-action adaptation directed by Dean Fleischer Camp has so far grossed over $914.4 million worldwide since its May opening. The announcement, which features Stitch taking a joyride in a pink convertible through Walt Disney Studios, is basically a victory lap. (The live-action 'Snow White,' which was also released earlier this year, grossed just $205.7 million worldwide.) Stitch is also one of Disney's most popular characters. The chaotic and cute alien introduced in the 2002 animated 'Lilo & Stitch' ranks among the top-selling Disney franchises.

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors Disney has wasted little time in capitalizing on the success of the animated remake reboot "Lilo & Stitch". On Thursday, Disney posted a video on social media, letting fans know that "Lilo & Stitch 2" is already in development. You can watch the video below. Disney It should come as little surprise that Disney is already keen to get a "Lilo & Stitch" sequel, considering its massive success. In spite of mixed reactions to many of the studio's live-action remakes lately, "Lilo & Stitch" has proven to be a record breaker in all the best ways. Among other things, the film earned the biggest 4-Day Memorial Day weekend box office ever with $182.6 million. That flew past even a record set by "Top Gun: Maverick", which earned $160.5 million. "Lilo & Stitch" enjoyed the highest Disney live-action opening of all time in Latin America, earning $27 million in Mexico and $12.2 million in Brazil. The remake earned the third-highest worldwide box office opening for a Disney live-action remake with $342 million, coming up short against "Beauty and the Beast" ($357 million) and "The Lion King" ($433 million). With only its opening weekend take, the live-action "Lilo & Stitch" soared over the entire theatrical release of the original animated film, which only took in $275 million. Overall, "Lilo & Stitch" has proven to be the second highest-grossing MPA movie of the year so far. The remake has made $923 million worldwide, coming in behind the $954 million amassed by "A Minecraft Movie". Even without the "Lilo & Stitch" remake, the franchise is one of the most important ones owned by Disney. According to Deadline, products based on "Lilo & Stitch" made Disney over $2.5 billion last year, and is one of 11 franchises that made over $1 billion for the company in 2024. "Lilo & Stitch" is also one of the most-streamed franchises on Disney+, with 546 million streamed hours of "Lilo & Stitch" content, and over half of that (280 million) attributed to views of the 2002 animated movie. There's no word yet on who will be writing or directing "Lilo & Stitch 2" or what cast members will return for the sequel. However, the return of Chris Sanders, who voiced Stitch and co-directed the 2002 animated film, seems like one of the safer bets. Sitting in the USA TODAY studio next to an animatronic Stitch, the actress recalls her audition process with a level of excitement you would expect from an 8-year-old. "Do you want to know a fun fact?" the Hawaii native asks. "It was my first trip to Disneyland and that's where we got the callback for the chemistry reads. And it actually snowed, like real snow, in Disneyland." Snow is rare in Anaheim, California. It's also rare for a young child to make her silver-screen debut in a major Disney movie. But in this instance, it was partly by design. Join our Watch Party! 'I always felt like we needed a real young kid for this, ideally one who hasn't become an actor and had their cuteness weaponized toward booking commercials. "Maia was 5 when she sent her tape and we thought it was really promising. But then, when she walked into the room for her callback, it was very clear to all of us that she was the front-runner. Unlike a lot of the kids we saw, she was dragging her parents to these auditions and not the other way around." Camp remembers how Kealoha was outgoing and "lit up the room when she walked in." She carries that same energy while talking about the film, her future and literally any other topic that comes up. "Oh, my gosh, I would love to be in a movie with Jenna Ortega and Adam Sandler," she says when asked about actors she looks up to. She adds that Sandler "is a funny one" and cites "Happy Gilmore" as her favorite film of his. In "Lilo & Stitch," Kealoha is a part of a cast that includes Hannah Waddingham, Zach Galifianakis and Billy Magnussen. Sydney Agudong plays her big sister/guardian Nani. Tia Carrere, who voiced Nani in the original, appears in the new film as the social worker Mrs. Kekoa. Chris Sanders reprises his role as the voice of Stitch. "(Galifianakis) is really funny and creative and he just told me to keep going on with my dreams," Kealoha recalls. "Also, Sydney (Agudong) taught me how to be a great big sister now that I have a little brother. She's just a great role model." Kealoha says it was "amazing" to watch the movie at the premiere and she hopes to act more. "I would like to do my own TV show," she says confidently. "Maybe like an action movie or 'M3GAN 3' or maybe a 'Lilo & Stitch 2.' Bing, bang, boom, let's go!" Kealoha laughs as she makes the "boom" noise and animatronic Stitch nods in approval. At least if Disney is looking to make a sequel, its stars are already on board. Contributing: Patrick Ryan
