Non-national man assaulted in Limerick after ‘fabricated allegations'

Gardaí are investigating after a non-Irish national was assaulted in Limerick following 'fabricated allegations" that had been made against him. The man, aged in his 40s, was taken to University Hospital Limerick after being assaulted on July 1 at approximately 3.45pm in the Parnell Street area, near People's Park. According to a Garda spokesperson, he suffered non-life threatening injuries. The assault came after several members of the public expressed concerns about the man's alleged behaviour in People's Park on the previous day. A Garda spokesperson said: 'On Monday, June 30, 2025 a number of members of the public expressed their concern to Gardaí attached to Henry Street Garda Station, for the alleged behaviour of a man who had earlier been seated in the People's Park, Limerick.' After enquiries, Gardaí have said they are 'satisfied that the alleged conduct was not of a criminal nature and was nothing untoward'. 'The male fully co-operated with Gardaí during the course of their enquiries. Gardaí are aware that this is the same male (the male who was assaulted) that was subject of the claims expressed on Monday, June 30,' the spokesperson added. An Garda Síochána is appealing for witnesses to this incident of assault to contact Roxboro Road Garda Station on 061 214340 , the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda station. Online disinformation Gardaí also noted that they are aware of the 'misinformation and disinformation currently in circulation online' relating to the initial concerns raised my members of the public. They have asked for any content shared to not be 'forwarded onwards or further posted'. Limerick-based refugee and migrant rights organisation, Doras, shared a statement condemning the "fabricated allegations'. 'We are appalled by the recent assault in Limerick of a man from a migrant background, following unfounded and fabricated allegations against him. This was a targeted act of harassment and violence. It has understandably caused fear and distress within migrant communities — and, rightly, outrage among the vast majority of people in Limerick who reject racism and vigilantism,' read the statement. Doras said Limerick has a proud tradition of being a welcoming and inclusive city — and that hate and harassment has no place there. 'We urge everyone: please do not share or engage with posts or videos that spread false claims. Doing so can put innocent people in real danger.' Doras said they are providing support to the man who was assaulted. 'We stand firmly with all migrants and others who face harassment or violence simply because of who they are,' they added. 'If you witness or experience racism or a hate crime, please contact us at 083 008 6391 or email: mvs@ Read More Beach-goers warned about poisonous weever fish amid spell of hot weather

Limerick seaweed-based skincare brand making waves on the market – ‘it's flying off the shelves'

Alongside his business partner Eoin Breen, co-founder Kevin Moore says the journey so far has been rewarding but challenging as they work to scale up and break into more retail outlets nationwide. 'It's a battle, but things are going well,' said the Glin man. 'We're at the stage now where we're trying to scale up, get into shops, get into spas. It's the sales calls that are tough work, but bit by bit, we're getting there,' Kevin told the Irish Independent. The brand, which prides itself on creating 100% natural, chemical-free skincare products, has found success in local stores across the southwest. 'Our best stockists are those that are closest to us,' he said. 'We're stocked in Sonas in Newcastle West and Rosemary there has just been incredible. It's flying off the shelves!' 'We're also in Maguire's Pharmacy in Listowel, a salon in Tralee, and bit by bit, we're expanding around the country,' Kevin adds. However, cracking the Dublin market has proven trickier for the pair. 'Ideally, you'd want to be meeting these people face-to-face, but based down here in West Limerick, it's not realistic for us to be going up and down to Dublin or Meath,' he admits. So we're suffering a bit by the phone at the moment. But look, some people listen, some people don't, that's just the way it is.' To Kevin, what makes Atlantik stand out in a crowded field is the brand's truly natural ingredients when 'natural' has become something of a buzzword across platforms. 'We've created natural preservative systems and natural emulsifiers from our foraged seaweed, there's no one else like us.' ADVERTISEMENT He says customer feedback has been extremely positive, with many stories pouring in of how the Limerick-based products have transformed their skin. 'We got advice off a girl yesterday, I thought she was actually going to start crying,' Kevin began. 'She had psoriasis on her elbows and knees and couldn't even stretch her arms up. Within a week of using our product, she could. 'To us, that's class, the product is genuinely helping people,' he smiled. Another memorable story came from a mother whose teenage son struggled with acne. 'She came into a shop and got the body wash for her 14-year-old son. She said they started using it, and his acne flare-up went down and he was going to a disco that Friday night,' Kevin said. 'You know, at that age, your whole world is how you look. That makes all the long days and nights researching worth it.' As Atlantik approaches its first anniversary in August, the team isn't standing still. A new face wash is set to launch imminently and they're also working on what could be a ground-breaking SPF made from seaweed. 'As far as we're aware, there's no marine-based SPF out there,' Kevin explains. 'All SPFs are synthetic chemicals, but we're creating one from a specific seaweed that has a naturally high SPF.' Despite the challenges of scaling up, Kevin and Eoin are determined to see the brand grow. 'You have to start somewhere, but we know there's a need for our product. It would be sad if we didn't make it because we know the impact it's having on people's lives.'

Treaty United teenager Michael Dike signs deal with Brighton

Republic of Ireland Under-19 goalkeeper Michael Dike has signed a permanent deal with Brighton and Hove from Limerick-based outfit Treaty United. The 18-year-old penned the deal this week with the English Premier League club for undisclosed terms and will join the Seagulls' Under-21s squad. Dike explained he visited Brighton on trial and has since been offered a contract. "I have been there a few times on trials and stuff like that and I enjoyed it and got offered a contract so I'm really happy. It's everything I have ever dream of, really exciting a new chapter," he said. Dike made his senior debut for Treaty United aged 17 in March last year, coming on as a substitute in a 1-0 away victory over Kerry FC. "The club has given me a good pathway I started with the academy and then had a little breakout year last year and made a couple of games," he added. The netminder then went on to make ten appearances for United in the 2024 season and he earned his first call-up to the Irish Under-19s in March. His favourite moment though was at aged only 17, saving two penalties to help Treaty edge past Kilbarrack in the FAI Cup. "The shootout was by far my favourite moment as a Treaty player, the adrenaline saving the first one, going for the second one and saving that and then winning the shootout." Dike previously played with Caherdavin Celtic and Limerick FC and was late in converting to nets, having previously played outfield. — Brighton & Hove Albion Academy (@BHAFC_Academy) June 25, 2025
