83-year-old Athens man charged with attempted murder in son's shooting

Jul. 10—An 83-year-old Athens man was charged with attempted murder after allegedly shooting his son in the back Wednesday, according to the Limestone County Sheriff's Office. Charles Lynn Lewis was being held in Limestone County Jail with no bail set as of Thursday afternoon. The Sheriff's Office said they responded to a shooting call in the 15000 block of Sanderson Lane following a 911 call by the victim who said he was shot in the back by his father. When deputies arrived on scene, they took Lewis into custody. Lewis was found to be in possession of the weapon believed to have been used in the shooting. "Based on physical evidence and witness statements, investigators determined that Lewis had lured the victim to the scene due to an ongoing personal dispute," the Sheriff's Office said. "Upon arrival, Lewis reportedly told the victim he intended to kill him before producing a handgun. As the victim attempted to flee, Lewis fired two shots, striking the victim once in the back." The victim was transported to a local hospital and is expected to recover, according to the Sheriff's Office. — or 256-340-2442.

Two Athens men charged with attempted murder after revenge shooting

Jul. 10—Two Athens men were charged with attempted murder after one of them sought to get revenge on the victim for allegedly damaging his vehicle in a separate domestic violence incident and shot the victim in the face, according to the Limestone County Sheriff's Office. Bradley Joe Hall, 50, is charged with attempted murder and shooting into an occupied dwelling and Jonathan Clayton Moore, 34, is charged with attempted murder. Both are being held in Limestone County Jail with no bond set. On Monday at 6 p.m., the Sheriff's Office said, deputies responded to a domestic violence call in the 10000 block of Poplar Point Road near Wheeler Lake. Deputies spoke with Hall at the scene and discovered his vehicle had been damaged during the incident. "Hall, who was not involved in the original domestic dispute, warned responding deputies that they 'better find the offender before him or he would take care of it himself,'" the Sheriff's Office said. Later that evening, the Sheriff's Office said Hall contacted Moore and told him he intended to kill the person he believed had damaged his vehicle. Moore agreed to drive Hall to the victim's residence. Around midnight, both men located the victim walking along the road. "Hall then exited the vehicle and shot the victim in the face," the Sheriff's Office said. "During the gunfire, an occupied dwelling was also struck. The pair fled the scene, but witnesses were able to describe both the suspects and their vehicle." A deputy located both of them and detained Hall at the scene while Moore fled on foot in a nearby cornfield, according to the Sheriff's Office. After working through the night and into Tuesday morning, deputies and investigators located him in the 13000 block of Nancy Lou Loop in the Oak Grove community, where he was armed and refused to exit the residence. The Limestone County SWAT team was deployed and Moore was safely taken without incident, the Sheriff's Office said. The Sheriff's Office said the victim's injuries were not life threatening. Moore was charged with first-degree robbery on Oct. 1, 2022, after he allegedly robbed cash from an individual at Mac's Sports Bar & Steakhouse while armed with a pistol, according to a complaint filed in Limestone County District Court. He was released the same day after posting a $100,000 bond and was indicted for the crime by a grand jury on May 26, 2023. A status hearing on Moore's robbery case is scheduled for Sep. 3 in Limestone County Circuit Court. This is the second attempted murder case this week in Limestone County as another Athens resident was also charged Monday with the same crime in a separate incident. Sheldyn Jamyson Hobbs Jr., 18, was charged with attempted murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle and remained in jail with no bond set as of Wednesday, according to jail records. Deputies responded Sunday to the 12000 block of Dickens Lane where a victim was found shot inside a vehicle and airlifted to a hospital due to the severity of the injuries, according to the Limestone County Sheriff's Office. Investigators identified the suspect as Hobbs and, on Monday morning, located his vehicle near the scene, taking him into custody without incident following a traffic stop. The Sheriff's Office believes the shooting stemmed from a previous altercation and is asking residents in the Copperfield Subdivision to review their home security footage from 10 p.m. Sunday to midnight for any suspicious activity. — or 256-340-2442.

UPDATE: Teen fatally injured after being hit by jet ski on Elk River

Jul. 8—A 17-year-old girl from Tennessee was killed Monday after a jet ski struck her while she was swimming in the Elk River near the Clements area, according to Limestone County Coroner Mike West and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. West said he received a call at 1:43 p.m. and he drove to Athens-Limestone Hospital where the teenager had been admitted. He said she was declared dead about an hour later and her official cause of death was blunt force trauma. "She was in the water on a float and there was another person on a jet ski that was circling her and hit her accidentally," West said. "She was unconscious. They pulled her to the dock and when they got her out of the water, she was not responsive and didn't have a pulse. So then, they started CPR." According to ALEA, the girl fell off an inflatable tube being towed by an 11-foot Sea-Doo personal watercraft operated by another 17-year-old from Tennessee. After she fell from the tube, she was struck by a 10-foot Sea-Doo personal watercraft driven by a 48-year-old from Pulaski, Tennessee. West said Clements Volunteer Fire Department, Limestone County Sheriff's Office and Athens-Limestone Emergency Medical Services all responded to the scene on Bream Bluff Road. He said the Alabama Marine Police are investigating the case. Jet ski wrecks and fatalities are not something that happens often in Limestone County, according to West. "Usually it's kayakers," West said. — or 256-340-2442.

Alabama 127 in Limestone County dedicated as Tommy Carter Highway

Jun. 21—ELKMONT — This week, 12 1/2 miles of Alabama 127 in Limestone County were designated the Tommy Carter Highway, for a man who officials say did more for the county than anybody. "I guess the best thing to say overall is he was a supporter of Athens and Limestone County. His heart and soul were a supporter," said Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks. "There are so many wonderful stories that you could tell about Tommy Carter. From saving Athens State University to being a special part of this community. Going all the way back to his high school football days. Just a great guy. Tommy made such a positive impact on this community." The stretch of road dedicated goes from the intersection of Jefferson Street and Elm Street in Athens all the way to the Tennessee state line. Jefferson Street turns into Alabama 127 at the intersection. There will be five to six signs erected at all major intersections declaring the road the Tommy Carter Highway. About 50 people attended the dedication, which was held Monday at Elkmont Elementary School on Alabama 127. Tommy Carter died in November and was just shy of 90 years old. "If somebody needed help, he was going to try to help them," said Tommy Carter's son, Tom Carter Jr. "I think that's his biggest accomplishment. He was always going to help anybody that called him if he could." Carter Jr. said his father's phone was always ringing with people needing help. "He loved serving Limestone County. He did so much for the county and the city (Athens) and the state," said Carter Jr. "Dad was in the House (of Representatives) for 36 years; school board six years before that. ... Every town in his district always got funds. He'd get calls from superintendents, principals, commissioners: 'I need help with this road, I need help with this school.' And he did his best to help everybody." In the early 1970s, Carter Jr. said, Tommy Carter helped save Athens State University. "It was about to close, and the state was going to take it over," Carter Jr. said. "In Montgomery, some were for that and some were against it. And he fought till about 2 a.m. to get the bill passed to save Athens State. Of course, Carter Gymnasium is named after him today." Carter Jr. said he grew up with his family in Elkmont, three houses off Alabama 127. "We're always on (Alabama) 127. Used to go to the country store on 127," he said. "I saw the sign coming up a while ago; it just gave me chills." Limestone County Commission Chairman Collin Daly said Carter made a large impact on Limestone County. "He was instrumental in so many things that went on in Limestone County over the years," he said. "One of the things he was instrumental in was getting the rocket (at the welcome center) here. ... He was instrumental in securing funds to save Athens State University. Tommy Carter has done so much over my lifetime. He was kind of the staple man in the community. ... Did so much for the state as a whole. "He was a great man and left behind a great legacy." — or 256-340-2460.
