As Closure Looms, Superchief Gallery Calls on L.A.'s Creative Community for Survival
After establishing itself in Brooklyn art circles as a digital magazine turned curator collective, Superchief Gallery brought its renegade spirit to Los Angeles, opening a West Coast art space in then, the gallery has become a cornerstone of L.A.'s underground art community, known for showcasing and launching subversive current exhibition, Creepy Gals: Haus of Divine, celebrates the work of artist Linda Chen. The show transformed the space into a church for love and smut, covered in all things red, pink, and Lovecore."Superchief was super supportive and helped me through the whole entire process," says Chen, reflecting on her second collaboration with the gallery (her first, Creepy Gals Land, debuted in February 2024). "The whole point of Haus of Divine is bringing in people who want to express themselves fully. I wanted to create a safe space for people to fully live their fantasy — and Superchief is that sort of place that allows people to just go off."At its core, Superchief champions rebellious, independent creators and — as founder Bill Dunleavy puts it — artists who "represent the raw spirit of Los Angeles culture." Over the last decade, the gallery has cultivated a space for experimental visionaries, launching groundbreaking exhibitions (often free of charge) that push the boundaries of contemporary art. For Superchief, it's always been less about making profit and more about bringing vital art and culture to the people of L.A. Now, after 10 years and more than 90 exhibitions in Los Angeles, the gallery faces the threat of permanent closure due to mounting financial challenges. It's turning to the very creative community it has long uplifted in hopes of securing its future. The gallery needs to raise enough support by May 1, or it will have no choice but to close its doors attributes Superchief's financial problems to several factors: the art market downturn, sponsorship decline and economic pressures. In August 2024, The New York Times reported a sharp downturn in high-end art sales, driven by inflation, high-interest rates, and cautious spending among wealthy collectors. "The art market has really collapsed," he says. "A lot of the avenues that we used to stay alive on, like sponsorships from brands, art sales, and that kind of thing, have been drying up for a while." He says art sales used to be more profitable, but as the economy has shifted, so has the way people buy art. More people nowadays purchase directly from the artist than from a third party, like a the past, Superchief collaborated with media sponsors like Juxtapoz Magazine, skateboard brands like HUF, and companies like Liquid Death. But over time, sponsorships have dwindled, making it harder to cover rent, pay staff, and continue offering the free, independent exhibits the gallery is known aims to rally 3,000 supporters able to contribute $10 a month in exchange for exclusive perks like free entry to ticketed events, official Superchief merch, and curated art prints delivered to their mailbox. The funds will go directly toward sustaining the space and its grassroots announcing its crowdfunding campaign, Dunleavy says the outpouring of support from the community has been overwhelming. He's hopeful that with enough monthly contributors, their unique arts programming can exist for years to come. "I would be devastated if Superchief were to close down," says Chen. "It's been so important to me and has helped me grow my own community. It has opened other people up to the work that I do, and I want to spread my art. We need more positivity in this world, and we need to save Superchief."Inclusivity is one of the guiding principles at Superchief Gallery LA. While some art institutions may feel pretentious or out of touch with everyday audiences, Dunleavy takes pride in making the space an accessible entry point into the art world for anyone — even for those who have yet to explore their creative side."One of the things that makes me happiest in running Superchief Gallery is that regular people who don't normally engage with art and the art world come here and get inspired and feel very welcomed," says Dunleavy. "That is something that I will not change, that's a rock solid point of the programming here. I'm not trying to alienate people."Celina Rodriguez, an L.A. based creative director and longtime friend of the gallery, echoes this sentiment: "Certain galleries and museum exhibitions aren't the most welcoming, quite frankly, and I think it's very intimidating for artists and for the youth to come together — brown and black folks, queer folks — to want to go into these spaces and to want to potentially have your works shown in these spaces." When the fires ravaged Los Angeles earlier this year, Rodriguez and Superchief partnered to provide mutual aid for fire victims. Within the first three days, over 150 volunteers mobilized to offer support, distributing supplies like free footwear from Shoe Palace."For people to be spending their own money, time, energy, gas — and on buying things and delivering things — it was so humanizing, and it was so humbling," says Rodriguez. 'These acts of solidarity prove that Superchief is more than just a gallery, it's a lifeline for the community.'Organizing relief efforts for the city of L.A. has inspired Dunleavy. He hopes to continue non-profit community work centered around serving undocumented immigrants, low-income folks, and victims of natural disasters. He also dreams of launching a bilingual workshop where Spanish and English-speaking people can come together and learn from one another."I fear we often hear that there's not enough culture, there's not enough spaces that exist that are for us, that have this sense of culture that welcome us, that house these shows and these experiences and spaces," adds Rodriguez. "This is an exact invitation to step up and help an outstanding gallery and safe space stay open, be one of the pillars in the creative art community, and be one of the cultural spaces that we yearn for."If the gallery survives, Dunleavy plans to do everything he can to keep Superchief's art openings free because he firmly believes no one should be charged for viewing. "We're here in the South Central side of Downtown L.A., we're across the street from a public high school,' Dunleavy shares. 'I want people to come in here and engage with art that is exciting, that can motivate them to get creative, learn more about art, expand their horizons, and be exposed to new ideas.'
