Hong Kong's Lingnan University buys T-Plus assets at 40% discount amid property slump
Hong Kong's Lingnan University has acquired commercial assets in a residential building in New Territories, joining a number of schools and universities that have snapped up real estate assets amid a slump in values. The university bought the shopping arcade, ground floor shops and a car park in the T-Plus residential tower for about HK$120 million (US$15.3 million), a 40 per cent discount to the asking price of HK$200 million, according to agents. The asset has a total gross area of 39,228 sq ft. Lingnan planned to convert the shopping arcade and the shops into classrooms, while the car parking spaces would be retained, according to an agent familiar with the deal. 'The property is close to the school's campus in Tuen Mun,' the agent said. 'We are representing other educational institutions that are looking for property, especially as prices have dropped a lot.' Lingnan University's campus in Tuen Mun. Office property prices were 43 per cent lower in April compared with their peak in June 2019, according to government data. Retail property prices, meanwhile, had fallen 35 per cent since May 2019. The value of commercial property was set to drop by a further 5 to 10 per cent this year, according to JLL.

Celebrate Hong Kong's intangible heritage at this festival in Tai Kwun
Over 300 intangible cultural heritage artworks created by the educators and students of the Hong Kong Art School and Lingnan University will be featured at this special exhibition, along with interactive activities, to highlight the contemporary expression of the traditions, arts, rituals, and crafts that make Hong Kong unique. There are plenty of traditional techniques still being practised today, such as cheongsam tailoring, soy sauce making, and even the famous Fire Dragon Dance, but this festival provides a look at how these traditions are also being reimagined and passed down in creative ways. This year's programme highlights the art of flower board crafting, with craftsman Choi Wing-kei and contemporary artist Lau Ming-hang, along with five students, taking on the challenge of co-creating a large-scale flower board installation. These signboards are typically used in celebrations such as deities' birthdays or the Hungry Ghost Festival, as well as the inauguration of projects like new buildings or businesses. Measuring approximately six metres in height and width, the ICH+ Festival's piece is a nod to the visual impact of traditional flower boards and also the intergenerational transmission of skills that has long been found in the teacher-disciple model of Hong Kong's traditional crafts. Some students will also be exhibiting their works on Guangcai making – the art of handpainting white porcelain with overglaze decorations – each showing distinctive elements of Hong Kong culture. Keep an eye out for iconic subjects like the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance, the Haw Par Mansion, and a traditional 'fishes and aquatics' motif. Aside from these two featured techniques, there will also be works related to other intangible cultural heritage such as Hong Kong cheongsam making, seal carving, Shiwan pottery making, dough figurine crafting, steamer making, blown sugar techniques, and many more. The art fair, game booths, workshops, and expert sharing sessions that accompany the exhibition will let visitors gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the treasured history that this city's culture is built on. The ICH+ Festival starts from June 21, with the art fair and game booths available until June 22, while the workshops run until July 5. Lingnan University student sues school over disqualification from top council election
A student at Hong Kong's Lingnan University is challenging in court the school's decision to disqualify him from a top council election last year. Isaac Lai, vice-chair of the Lingnan University Students' Union, appeared at the High Court on Friday to dispute the public university's decision to bar him from running in the top governing council election last November. At that time, the university accused Lai of 'promoting himself by non-official means' and disqualified him from the election one day before the vote, according to local media reports. Lai filed the lawsuit in March, asking the court to overturn the university's decision after his internal complaint to the university council was rejected. Lingnan University registrar Margaret Cheung and the university council were listed as the respondents in Lai's challenge. Lawyers for Lai told the court on Friday that he only used his personal Instagram account to share his election platform, Sing Tao reported. That account was private and not openly accessible, they said. They also argued that the university's election rules did not explicitly restrict candidates from promoting themselves through official means, and that Lai's disqualification was unlawful. But lawyers representing the university argued that the rule restricting election promotion to official channels could ensure a 'fair election.' Lai knew the rule but deliberately posted QR codes linking to his Instagram account on campus, hence breaking election rules, the university's lawyers said. Judge Russell Coleman will hand down his judgment on or before July 31.

Four held over HK$1.3m theft from student union
Four held over HK$1.3m theft from student union Police accuse the suspects of embezzling the student union's funds and using the money to pay off credit card debts and for personal spending. File photo: RTHK Four people have been arrested on suspicion of stealing around HK$1.3 million from the Lingnan University Students' Union. Two of them are current executive committee members of the union and the other two are former members. The suspects are aged from 21 to 24. Police allege that they embezzled the student union's funds and used the money to pay off credit card debts and for personal spending. "The investigation showed that the student union is a legal and registered society. Any cheques issued from their bank account require signatures from two executive committee members to be redeemed and take effect," chief inspector Au Yeung Tak said. Police allege that two former executive committee members signed four cheques totalling HK$1.3 million between April 2024 and April 2025. Officers also seized items such as computers, phones, bank documents and credit cards. In response to RTHK's enquiry, Lingnan University said it's learning about the incident and will fully cooperate with the police investigation.
