Giallo Gelato at Logan Theatre brings 4 nights of horror and ice cream to Chicago
The Giallo Geltao event at the Logan Theatre in Logan Square is bringing four nights of Italian horror films paired with cold, sweet treats to the city this weekend. Each of the four movies featured in the event are celebrating their 50th anniversary this ear. Giallo is an Italian horror cinema genre that is often described as Italy's post-World War II answer to Alfred Hitchcock. Arty, brightly colored and blood-soaked, the movies combine elements of horror, thrillers and murder along with high style. The genre reached its peak by the mid-70s and produced classics like Dario Argento's "Suspiria" and Mario Brava's "Blood and Black Lace." The Logan Theatre will be showing Armando Crispino's "Autopsy" on Friday, July 18; Dario Argeno's "Deep Red" on Saturday, July 19; "Strip Nude for Your Killer" by Andrea Bianchi on Sunday, July 20; and Luigi Bazzoni's "Footprints on the Moon" on Monday, July 21. There will be themed gelato flavors inspired by each night's movie. You can get tickets to any or all of these films at

Rosa's Lounge in Logan Square launches record label, with Billy Branch as first signed artist
Legendary Chicago blues bar Rosa's Lounge in Logan Square is launching its very own record label. Rosa's Lounge has been in business for more than 40 years, and hope their new record label will help even more people enjoy soulful music. And the first artist they signed has a strong connection to the nightclub. "When you got a good crowd and you're reaching the crowd, and you can tell when they're with you, it's a wonderful feeling," said musician Billy Branch "It's a connection between you and the audience." The blues legend has felt that connection many times at Rosa's Lounge; in fact, he was the first act the day the nightclub opened more than 40 years ago. Now he's the first artist signed to Rosa's new record label and is their first single "Begging for Change." "It's a metaphor. Literally, you can't go outside without someone begging for money, but people are also begging for change because they're not happy with their current situation," he said. Tony Mangiullo owns the lounge and, now, the record label. He fell in love with the blues as a young musician in Italy, and opened Rosa's, named for his mother, in 1984. "We always kept some sort of record of what we've done through the years, because we believed we had something valuable," he said. Those records include pictures, videos and – during COVID - live streams. For him, the record label is the next logical step and Branch is the perfect person to help launch it. "It's definitely the most natural because of our long partnership," Mangiullo said. "He represented the new generation of the Chicago blues and I wanted him to put us on that path." "It's new, it's united, it's unproven, but every label has to start somewhere and given the long history that I have with Rosa's, it seemed to make sense," Branch said. Branch's new single comes out on vinyl Aug. 1, with launch parties on Aug. 1 and 2 at Rosa's Lounge. "Begging for Change" is already available through streaming, and Branch's next full album comes out Nov. 7.

The Messi Experience comes to Logan Square, giving fans full immersion with soccer megastar
Lionel Messi is such a sports legend, even people who know nothing about soccer know his name. He has set attendance records at opponents' stadiums , like when he came to Chicago in April with Inter Miami. Now he's back in Chicago, at least in virtual form. Messi fans in the area can immerse themselves in his story at The Messi Experience in Logan Square. It includes video recorded specifically by the football star for the show. "You'll get a guided tour, so this also is very personal," said managing partner Sebastian Diericx. "It's not like you're walking through a museum and watching things that are still. It's a story that you live through." The story begins at the peak of Messi's career, celebrating his 2022 World Cup win on top of a bus. Millions of fans in his home country of Argentina came to celebrate him. Fans follow Messi's journey back in time, visiting the dirt fields where he first played and the childhood bedroom in which he dreamed big. "See if you pick up the phone, you can hear actually when he's talking to Barcelona's executive telling him we're going to invite you to come and play for us in La Masia, which is their development program," Diericx said. Fans can also train with Messi… or at least give it their best shot. And you can take a selfie with him, too. At the end, every visitor will know much more than Messi's name; they'll know his journey.
