Off-duty Border Patrol agent drunkenly assaults cop, California officials say
An off-duty U.S. Border Patrol is accused of drunkenly assaulting a police officer while resisting arrest, California prosecutors say. Now, Isaiah Anthony Hodgson, 29, has been charged with multiple felonies in connection with the July 7 incident, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said in a July 11 news release. 'The conduct exhibited by Mr. Hodgson, a border patrol agent who has the duty to uphold the law and protect its citizens, is unacceptable and deeply troubling,' District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said in the release. 'No one is above the law, regardless of their position or badge.' A Los Angeles County Public Defender's Office spokesperson, Hodgson's legal defense, told The Los Angeles Times they 'could not immediately comment' on his charging. When asked for comment, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said the 'matter is under investigation' in a July 14 email to McClatchy News. Hodgson was visiting a Shoreline Village restaurant in Long Beach on July 7 when he entered the women's restroom and approached a woman, prosecutors said. The woman noticed Hodgson had a 'handgun and firearm magazine,' according to prosecutors. Shortly after the woman told the restaurant manager about the encounter, prosecutors said, Hodgson left the restaurant. Hodgson was in the restaurant's parking lot when a security guard approached him after seeing him 'holding a firearm magazine along with a firearm on his waistband,' prosecutors said. As 'firearms were not permitted on the property,' the security guard asked Hodgson to leave multiple times, prosecutors said. Long Beach police officers arrived after getting a report of a person with a gun, prosecutors said. Officers said Hodgson was 'intoxicated and unwilling to cooperate with their commands as they tried to detain him,' prosecutors said. As officers tried to arrest him, Hodgson resisted, becoming 'agitated and physical with the officers, injuring one of them,' according to prosecutors. Alyssa Baeza, public information officer with Long Beach police, described the officer's injuries from the scuffle as minor, The Los Angeles Times reported. 'As public servants, we are never off duty. How we conduct ourselves is a reflection of the agencies we serve,' Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson said in a Facebook post. 'The behavior of this officer exemplifies a culture of complete disregard for the welfare of our community and undermines public trust.' Hodgson was charged with 'three felony counts of resisting an executive officer; one felony count of battery with injury on a peace officer; one misdemeanor count of exhibiting a concealable firearm in public; one misdemeanor count of having a concealed firearm on person; and one misdemeanor count of carrying a loaded firearm on one's person,' prosecutors said. Hodgson, who is scheduled to appear in court July 17, was released from jail custody under the conditions that he not possess any guns, not leave the state and 'attend at least three alcohol counseling meetings a week,' prosecutors said. If convicted of all charges, prosecutors said Hodgson could be sentenced up to seven years in prison.

Marine beaten then hit by car dies, CA officials say. Now 2 cousins charged
Peter Chounthala, who enlisted in the Marines in 2008, was planning on retiring at the end of 2024. And his plans for retirement were already set, his wife, Jurina Chounthala, said at a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department news conference in July. 'He was going to be a stay-at-home dad, and he was going to take care of the house,' Jurina Chounthala said. Peter Chounthala's family, though, never saw him retire. He died after he was beaten, left in the street and hit by a passing car in Bellflower on May 28, 2024, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said in a June 12 news release. 'I feel like this life we built together is so unfamiliar,' Jurina Chounthala said. 'Waking up every day and realizing that he's no longer here … It's a painful reality.' And now, nearly a year after Jurina Chounthala's pleas to the public for information about her husband's killing, two men have been charged, prosecutors said. Two cousins, Damari Kensey, 21, of Long Beach and Jaymel Williams, 28 of Inglewood, are each facing a murder charge in the death of Peter Chounthala, prosecutors said. During their arraignments, both men pleaded not guilty, prosecutors said. 'This brutal and senseless act took the life of a husband, father and Marine who served our country with honor, including tours in Afghanistan and multiple Marine expeditionary units,' District Attorney Natain Hochman said in the release. 'Senseless acts of violence' After Peter Chounthala left a Bellflower bar in the early morning hours of May 28, Kensey and Williams followed him, prosecutors said. The pair 'violently beat' Peter Chounthala and left him 'lying in the middle of Artesia Boulevard, in active lanes of traffic,' prosecutor said. A short time later, a passing car hit Peter Chounthala, prosecutors said. The driver did not stop and has yet to be identified, according to prosecutors. Peter Chounthala died on scene, prosecutors said. 'Investigators believe Mr. Chounthala was an innocent victim of these senseless acts of violence,' Lt. Patricia Thomas with sheriff's department said at the news conference announcing a $20,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in Chounthala's killing. 'He was everything to me' Family told investigators Peter Chounthala was a man who was 'loved by all, generous and caring and always willing to help anyone in need,' Thomas said. 'He was everything to me, to my family,' Jurina Chounthala said. 'He's like the glue that held all of us together.' The couple, who met when they were both stationed in Okinawa, Japan, was married for 11 years and welcomed a son during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Jurina Chounthala, an active-duty Air Force member, said. 'Since becoming a father to our son, he has been just the best dad,' Jurina Chounthala said. While it's painful being a widow, Jurina Chounthala said the loss is even greater knowing her 'son is without a father.' 'I have so many pictures of just him standing in front of pictures of his dad, because I'm sure he's so used to seeing his dad and hearing his dad,' Jurina Chounthala said. Kensey and Williams, who are each being held on $2 million bail, are scheduled to appear in court June 18, prosecutors said. Bellflower is about a 20-mile drive southeast from Los Angeles.

Jennifer Aniston's alleged stalker, gate crasher facing felony charges
The 48-year-old man from Mississippi arrested for crashing through a gate at Jennifer Aniston's Bel Air home faces the possibility of three years in prison if convicted on all charges, authorities announced Wednesday. In a news release, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said Jimmy Wayne Carwyle is charged with stalking the Emmy and Golden Globe award winning actress since March 2023. Prosecutors said Carwyle, a resident of New Albany, Mississippi, repeatedly harassed Aniston, identified only as 'Jennifer A' in the release, leaving her unwanted voicemails, as well sending her messages over social media and email. Carwyle's alleged fixation culminated in a frightening ordeal on May 5 when he reportedly crashed through the front gates of Aniston's Bel Air mansion, causing damage to the property. The 'Friends' and 'Morning Show' actress was reportedly home when the incident happened. He has since been charged with one count each of felony stalking and felony vandalism, as well as an aggravating circumstance of the threat of great bodily harm, L.A. County prosecutors said. 'Stalking is a crime that can quickly escalate from harassment to dangerous, violent actions, threatening the safety of victims and our communities,' L.A. DA Nathan Hochman said. 'My office is committed to aggressively prosecuting those who stalk and terrorize others, ensuring they are held accountable.' A man accused of crashing his vehicle through the gates of actress Jennifer Aniston's Los Angeles home this week now faces stalking and vandalism charges. Jimmy Wayne Carwyle, 48, of New Albany, Mississippi, is accused of "repeatedly harassing" the former "Friends" star, sending her "unwanted social media, voicemail, and email messages" over the past two months, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. The "alleged harassment culminated when he allegedly crashed his vehicle through her front gate, causing substantial damage" midday Monday, the DA's office said in a press release announcing the charges, referring to the victim as Jennifer A. Carwyle was initially being held on suspicion of vandalism in the wake of Monday's incident at Aniston's Bel Air home.
