Tigers sign former World Series champion to boost bullpen

At long last for the Detroit Tigers' bullpen, help is on the way. The current American League Central leaders have signed relief pitcher Luke Jackson, who was just recently designated for assignment and later released by the Texas Rangers, as first reported by Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press. The reliever was signed to a major league contract that will keep him in Detroit for the remainder of the 2025 season, with the Rangers paying the remainder of the $1.5 million contract that he signed with them over the offseason. In 39 appearances with the Rangers in 2025, Jackson possesses a 4.11 earned run average with 24 strikeouts. Jackson was drafted by the Rangers with the 45th overall pick in the 2010 MLB Draft, making his major league debut in 2015. After two seasons, Jackson would then spend five seasons with the Atlanta Braves, winning the 2021 World Series with the team as they defeated the Houston Astros in six games. After missing the 2022 season with Tommy John surgery, Jackson would then sign with the San Francisco Giants, before returning to Atlanta near the trade deadline last year. Finishing out the season with the Braves, Jackson would return to Arlington at the start of 2025, before some decline in on-field production caused Texas to give Jackson the DFA, where the Tigers would then add a solution to their bullpen issues.

Rangers activate RHP Jon Gray after spending season on IL

July 23 - The Texas Rangers on Wednesday activated right-hander Jon Gray, who will be looking to make his season debut after sustaining a fractured right wrist in spring training. In a corresponding move, the Rangers designated right-handed reliever Luke Jackson for assignment. Gray, 33, went on the 60-day injured list after being hit by a comebacker off the bat of Colorado's Michael Toglia during a Cactus League game on March 14 in Surprise, Ariz. He made three starts on rehabilitation assignments with Texas minor league affiliates, going a combined 8 2/3 innings with a 3.12 ERA. He started for Triple-A Round Rock on Saturday and yielded one earned run with two walks five strikeouts in 61 pitches over 3 2/3 innings. Gray has made trips to the injured list in each of his three seasons with the Rangers. He was limited to just 102 2/3 innings in 2024 because of two groin strains and a foot neuroma that required offseason surgery. Gray posted a 5-6 record with a 4.47 ERA in 23 appearances (19 starts) last season. Gray, in the final season of a four-year, $56 million contract, is 74-70 with a 4.45 ERA in 228 career games (223 starts) with the Colorado Rockies (2015-21) and Rangers. Jackson, 33, went 2-5 with nine saves, a 4.11 ERA, 19 walks and 24 strikeouts in 35 innings over 39 relief appearances for Texas this season. He has a career 24-16 record with 28 saves and 4.23 ERA in 377 games (all in relief) with Texas (2015-16, 2025), Atlanta (2017-21, 2024), and San Francisco (2023-24). --Field Level Media

Inside the romance between footy star, 23, and another big name in Aussie sport - who's 10 years older than him

Fremantle Dockers star Luke Jackson's relationship with netball star turned TV commentator Kelsey Browne is still going strong, with the couple sharing a loved-up photo to social media after his team's biggest win of the year. The AFL star, 23, hard-launched his relationship with the former West Coast Fever star, 33, in September last year while on a romantic holiday in Mauritius. The romantic revelation came about as Browne took on a new role as a club ambassador for the Fever. Jackson starred for the Dockers over the weekend, kicking a late long-range goal in the fourth quarter to help his side beat Collingwood by a point at the MCG. Browne was on hand for the victory celebrations, with the couple both posting a photo of themselves embracing in the sheds after the match as she looked smitten with her man. 'Great photo of a great couple,' replied one footy fan. 'Winning on and off the field,' said another. 'We love to see it,' posted a third. Rumours about the couple hooking up first surfaced in July last year when Browne posted a TikTok video showing her engaging in her 'fave nightly ritual' as she stood in a backyard pool while wearing a heavy jacket. That took on new meaning when footy fans realised that pool was in a post Jackson made on Instagram last May, showing him cooking on a barbecue. Then, in August last year, they were seen together in a photo the Fever posted from the team's annual awards night. Browne and Jackson also posted sots of the same bath on the deck of a cabin in Busselton, a popular holiday spot about 200km south of Perth. Earlier this year, rumours circulated that Jackson might be looking to move to a Victorian club, despite being contracted with Fremantle until 2029. Channel Seven reporter Mitch Cleary reported that the couple were interested in heading to Victoria, where Browne is originally from and her family is still based. However, Dockers coach Justin Longmuir poured cold water on the speculation. 'Not a concern. Nothing I've seen of Luke throughout the pre-season has shown me he wants to leave the club,' Longmuir said. 'Someone from the club has spoken to him already and he's reiterated that he doesn't want to go anywhere and he's never been happier. 'We'll leave it at that, I reckon.' Browne, who currently works as a commentator for the NBL, was one of the country's top attacking players during her career, winning two premierships with the Lightning and going on to represent the nation internationally. A Geelong native, she comes from a sporting family, with her dad Mark playing for the Cats in the 1970s and her sister Madison going on to be one of the nation's most successful netball players.

Fremantle pull off season-defining result to pip Pies

Fremantle have significantly boosted their AFL finals prospects after stunning premiership favourites Collingwood with a classic one-point win at the MCG. Down by 22 points early in the final quarter, the Dockers surged home with the last four goals of the game to win 12.7 (79) to 11.12 (78) in a Sunday special. After ruckman Luke Jackson slotted a long-range set shot to put Fremantle in front, Collingwood star Jamie Elliott had an opportunity to regain the lead with two minutes remaining. Usually the ultimate clutch player, Elliott missed the shot from 40m out, levelling the game 78-78. The Dockers were able to force the ball down the other end, with Fremantle ace Shai Bolton awarded a free kick inside 50. The former Richmond player missed the shot, but it put Fremantle up again by one point. Collingwood entered inside 50, but Fremantle forward Josh Treacy pushed back to take a game-saving mark in front of the Magpies' goal with just seconds left. Treacy also received a 50m penalty, giving the Dockers enough of a buffer to hang on for what could be a season-defining win. The result puts Fremantle into seventh spot, crucially two games clear of the ninth-placed Western Bulldogs. It was Collingwood's second straight loss, after falling to Gold Coast last week to end their eight-game winning streak. Fremantle forward Patrick Voss enjoyed a career-best day, finishing with six goals. Matched up on Darcy Moore, Voss torched the Collingwood captain with three first-quarter goals. The Magpies moved enforcer Brayden Maynard on to Voss in the second-half, helping curb his influence. But Fremantle's forwards were starved of opportunities as the Dockers went inside 50 just 40 times to Collingwood's 63. Fremantle wingman Matthew Johnson awkwardly twisted his foot in a contest with Steele Sidebottom in the final quarter and was assisted from the field by medical staff. Dockers gun Hayden Young made a successful return from a long-term absence with a hamstring injury, coming on as the sub in the third term. Collingwood superstar Nick Daicos, who started off half-back, was typically prolific with 43 disposals and a goal. But Dockers midfielder Caleb Serong went close to him, gathering 37 touches and nine clearances of his own.
