Richard Gere slammed over broken promise to preserve home

Music legend Paul Simon's daughter has lashed out at Richard Gere for selling her childhood home to real estate developers — who are now demolishing the historic property. Singer Lulu Simon, 30, took to Instagram to share some strong words for the 'Pretty Woman' star. 'Just in case anyone was wondering if I still hate Richard Gere – I do! 'He bought my childhood home, promised he would take care of the land as condition of his purchase proceeded to never actually move in & just sold it to a developer as 9 separate plots,' she claimed, according to People as reported by Fox News. 'Hate! Him!' Lulu concluded while attaching a screenshot of an article showing Gere's latest real estate venture. In a second Instagram story, Lulu wrote, 'I hope my dead pets buried in that backyard haunt you until you descend into a slow and unrelenting madness'. The text was written above a photo of Gere with photos of cats and dogs surrounding the 'Chicago' actor. According to records, Simon purchased the home in 2002 for $US16.5 million ($A25 million) — three years before he and his wife, Edie Brickell, welcomed daughter Lulu. The singer-songwriter first listed the property for a whopping $US13.9 million ($A21.1 million). Gere purchased the home in 2022 for $US10.8 million ($A16.4 million) and originally planned to turn a large portion of its expansive grounds into a farm. The Golden Globe winner and his wife, Alejandra Silva, sold the Simon property in October 2024 for $US10.75 million ($A16.4 million). In May, news surfaced that the home was scheduled for demolition to create room for the nine-plot real estate venture. The news of the reported demolition came after the Geres moved to Spain. Alejandra is from there and wished to be closer to family. 'For me, going to Madrid is going to be a great adventure because I have never lived full time outside the United States,' the 75-year-old told Vanity Fair Spain. 'And I think it will also be very interesting for my children. For Alejandra, it will be wonderful to be closer to her family, her lifelong friends and her culture. 'She was very generous in giving me six years living in my world, so I think it's fair that I give her at least six others living in hers. In any case, I love Spain and I think your lifestyle is fabulous. Also, your ability to live, transmitting joy and happiness. 'It is a beautiful place, the food is extraordinary and people exude sensitivity and generosity, as well as a strong will to laugh and enjoy. So I'm looking forward to going there.' After relocating at the end of 2024, Silva expressed an interest in returning to the US at the 2025 Gala: Carnaval in New York City. 'For a few years [we'll live in Spain], and then come back. But we're always coming back,' she said, referring to her sons Alexander, 5, and James, 4. 'We'll come back here in the summer because we have the kids at camp. We just have to balance our lives there and here,' she continued. After years of living in New York City, the couple decided to move to Spain. 'I'm with my family … I missed them a lot. But I miss the US So we come back and forth,' she told the outlet.

Pop icon's daughter says her dead pets will haunt Richard Gere for 'breaking promise' on $10million childhood home

Paul Simon's singer daughter has lashed out at actor Richard Gere for selling her $10million childhood home to real estate developers who plan to demolish the 1930s mansion to build a plot of new homes. Lulu Simon, 30, took to Instagram on Tuesday to blast Gere, 75, for allegedly renegging on a promise he made to her family to 'take care of land' when he bought the New Canaan, Connecticut, property from the Simon & Garfunkel musician and his wife Edie Brickell in 2022. 'Just in case anyone was wondering if I still hate Richard Gere – I do!' Lulu wrote in a post in all caps, accompanied by a selfie and a screen shot of a news article about the home being torn down despite backlash from preservationists. She claimed that looking after the land was a 'condition' of Gere's purchase but did not share any further details about the alleged agreement. 'He bought my childhood home,' she continued. 'Promised he would take care of the land as condition of his purchase. Proceeded to never actually move in & just sold it to a developer as nine separate plots… Hate! Him!' In a second post, Lulu issued the Pretty Woman actor a chilling warning. 'I hope my dead pets buried in that backyard haunt you until you descend into a slow and unrelenting madness.' The caption was displayed alongside an old photo of Gere, edited onto a collage depicting some of her late pets. A third post followed, which consisted of a meme of a frog sitting in front of a colorful sky along with the caption, 'Time will put your enemies in the ground.' The posts were eventually deleted around 18 hours after they were published, according to Realtor. A representative for Gere has not yet responded to a request for comment. The Chicago star bought the six-bedroom, seven-bathroom home from Simon and Brickell for $10.8 million, and sold it for $10.75 million in an off-market deal to real estate developers in October 2024. Then, in May, it was revealed the historic home was scheduled for demolition in order to make way for a nine-property development on the site. That news came after Gere and his wife, 42-year-old Spanish publicist Alejandra Gere, relocated to Madrid so the pair and their children could be closer to her family. The couple share sons Alexander, 6, and James, 5. Alejandra is also mom to son, Albert, 11, with ex-husband Govind Friedland, while Gere shares son Homer, 25, with ex-wife Carey Lowell. 'For Alejandra, it will be wonderful to be closer to her family, her lifelong friends and her culture,' Gere told Vanity Fair Spain in April 2024. 'She was very generous in giving me six years living in my world, so it is only fair that I give her at least another six living in here.' Alejandra later shared they plan on moving back to the US in a 'few years.' Like Gere, Paul Simon also made a loss when he sold the property. The Sound of Silence troubadour bought the home with Brickell in 2002 for $16.5million, according to Town & Country. They attempted to sell the Georgian-style estate in 2019 for $13.9million but a buyer was not forthcoming. The asking price fluctuated for the next three years before Gere purchased the 31.8 acre plot in 2022. Gere had originally sought to convert the majority of the land into a farm. During a 2023 Planning and Zoning Commission meeting, Gere's lawyer David Rucci assured the commission that the historical property would not be turned into commercial real estate. 'I have received phone calls from four or five neighbors [who were] very concerned… if this was going to be some sort of big commercial operation, and it's really not,' Rucci said at the time, according to the N ew Canaan Advertiser. 'The owners… they both have grown up on farms, they're very interested in farms and teaching their kids about farms…so this is really important to them.' Although the property is now destined for demolition, salvage experts from York-based Hudson Valley House Parts have worked to extract some of the home's architectural gems to be repurposed. The company shared an Instagram Reel in May, showing off the sprawling property and some of the historic elements they were able to save. 'For the past month we have been fascinated by this estate as our team has been working on location salvaging many architectural elements,' the company wrote. 'Formerly owned by Richard Gere who purchased the property from Paul Simon and Edie Brickell, this 1930s home is scheduled for demolition with the intention of dividing the 32 acres into nine large lots.' The lots will range between 2.2 and 4.8 acres. They will be sold empty, giving buyers the chance to build their dream homes from the ground up, CT Insider reported.

Paul Simon's daughter calls on her dead pets to haunt Richard Gere

So-called 'nepo babies' have been widely criticised for exploiting their famous parents' personal connections, whether it be Paul McCartney's daughter, Stella, when she first interned for Christian Lacroix or Lila Moss when she was featured on Vogue's front cover alongside her mother, Kate. The daughter of Paul Simon, however, appears to have few qualms about burning bridges with one of her father's famous peers, calling on the ghosts of her dead pets to haunt Richard Gere after he sold her childhood home. Lulu Simon claimed the Pretty Woman actor had 'promised he would take care of the land' when he purchased the property from her parents, Paul Simon and Edie Brickell, for $10.8 million (£7.9 million) in 2022. However, Gere sold the house for $10.75 million (£7.9 million) last year to a property developer who plans to demolish the 1930s mansion to make space for nine new homes. 'Just in case anyone was wondering if I still hate Richard Gere — I do!' Simon, 30, wrote on Instagram along with a link to a news story about the home in New Canaan, Connecticut, being torn down. 'Hate! Him!' Simon added: 'He bought my childhood home. Promised he would take care of the land as condition of his purchase. Proceeded to never actually move in & just sold it to a developer as 9 separate plots :).' In a now-deleted Instagram story, Simon shared an image of Gere surrounded by a collage of her deceased pets. 'I hope my dead pets buried in that backyard haunt you until you descend into a slow and unrelenting madness,' Simon wrote over the photograph of Gere. Her father, one half of the folk rock duo, Simon & Garfunkel, had owned the home for 20 years, having bought it for $16.5 million (£11,4 million). Gere, 75, relocated to Spain late last year with his wife, Alejandra Silva, 42, with whom he has two sons, Alexander, six, and James, five. According to details shared with local planners in 2023, the Gere family had planned to turn the 32-acre estate into a farm. Gere sold the property to SBP Homes, which in May revealed its plan to knock down the six-bedroom mansion.

Paul Simon's daughter unleashes on Richard Gere over broken promise to preserve childhood home

Paul Simon's daughter, Lulu, called out Richard Gere for purportedly selling her childhood home to real estate developers, who are now demolishing the home to build nine new properties. "For me, going to Madrid is going to be a great adventure because I have never lived full time outside the United States," the 75-year-old told Vanity Fair Spain. "And I think it will also be very interesting for my children. For Alejandra, it will be wonderful to be closer to her family, her lifelong friends and her culture. Paul Simon's daughter tears into Richard Gere for selling childhood home to developer

Paul Simon's daughter has torn into Richard Gere for selling her childhood home to a property developer who plans to demolish the historic mansion. Lulu Simon wrote on Instagram: 'Hate! Him!' next to a picture of the Pretty Woman actor and a link to a news story about the home being torn down in the face of anger from preservationists. Ms Simon, 30, a pop singer, claimed that Mr Gere 'promised he would take care of the land' in New Canaan, Connecticut, when he bought it from her father in 2022. Mr Gere sold it to a developer last year for $10.75 million and the company is planning to knock down the six-bedroom mansion, which was built in 1938 on a 32-acre plot. In its place will be nine homes, SBP Homes has said. In her now-deleted post Ms Simon included an image of Mr Gere, 75, surrounded by photos of her late pets. She wrote: 'I hope my dead pets buried in that backyard haunt you until you descend into a slow and unrelenting madness.' The rancour began in 2022 when Mr Simon and his wife Edie Brickell sold the home, which was designed by architect Harold R Sleeper, to Mr Gere. Mr Simon had owned it for 20 years and bought it 20 years ago for $16.5 million. The home was not listed publicly and Mr Gere bought it at a discount, for just $10.8 million. Originally Mr Gere planned to turn the estate into a farm, according to details shared with local planners in 2023. But those plans changed in late 2024 when Mr Gere relocated to Spain with his wife Alejandra Gere, 42, with whom he has two sons Alexander, five, and James, four. Instead they sold the property to SBP Homes which recently revealed its development plans. In her post, Ms Simon posted herself flashing a peace sign and said: 'Just in case anyone was wondering if I still hate Richard Gere – I do! 'He bought my childhood home. Promised he would take care of the land as (a) condition of his purchase. Proceeded to never actually move in and just sold it to a developer as nine separate plots. 'Hate! Him!' Ms Simon continued her rant with a second post about the dead pets. Both posts were deleted around 18 hours after they were first put online.
