A Kendrick Lamar Class Will Be Offered At Temple University This Fall

Source: PA Wire – PA Images / Getty This fall, you can get some class credit for your obsession with Kendrick Lamar. Well, only if you are enrolled at Temple University in Philly, where noted professor Timothy Welbeck will teach an inaugural class on the 'Not Like Us' rapper. Welbeck is a professor in Temple's Department of Africology and African American Studies and the Director for the Center for Anti-Racism, who has taught at the school for 14 years. The course will be called Kendrick Lamar and the Morale of M.A.A.D City , referencing a track from Lamar's 2012 sophomore release Good Kid, M.A.A.D City . The professor told NBC10 in Philadelphia that he's been using Lamar's music in his classes for at least the last decade and that the department was receptive to the idea of a class on the Los Angeles-based rap star. He won't be the first musician the university has offered a class on, as Jay-Z, his wife Beyoncé, and Tupac have all been studied there as well. 'My current department chair was very open to the idea and received it almost immediately,' Welbeck told the outlet. 'In a lot of ways, our department at Temple specifically, and Temple more broadly, has embraced the study of hip-hop in academic spaces.' Lamar, 38, created a viral sensation in 2024 with his Drake diss track 'Not Like Us,' which he performed at the Super Bowl LIX halftime show in February. He's the only rap star to win a Pulitzer Prize, which he did in 2018. He's also won 22 Grammys, placing him third behind Jay-Z and Kanye West. Lamar is currently on the international leg of his Grand National Tour with SZA in support of his sixth studio album, GNX. Welbeck says the class will cover Lamar's music through the lens of the changing demographics in Compton, California, and its impact on Lamar's life and career. He hopes his students will come away from the course with a renewed appreciation for the artist and how he fits into the Black cultural zeitgeist. 'Kendrick Lamar is one of the defining voices of his generation, and in many ways, both his art and life is reflective of the Black experience in many telling ways,' Welbeck said. 'Being able to discuss his art in the environment that helps lead him into being the man that he is in a lot of ways can tell you about him as an individual, but can also talk about the journey towards self-actualization, particularly as it is related to the Black experience.' Queen Joins Eminem And Michael Jackson In A Historic Feat

Queen's Greatest Hits has now spent 650 weeks on the Billboard 200, and it now ranks among the top ... More 12 longest-charting albums in U.S. history. UNSPECIFIED - FEBRUARY 01: Photo of Freddie MERCURY and QUEEN; Freddie Mercury performing live on stage, (Photo by Fin Costello/Redferns) The introduction of streaming platforms radically changed how Billboard compiles its weekly albums chart, the Billboard 200. The tally, which for decades ranked the bestselling full-lengths and EPs in America, had to evolve as streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon, and iHeartRadio became ubiquitous. It became impossible to ignore that millions of people preferred to stream their favorite albums rather than buy them. Now, the roster is created every week using a blend of pure purchases and streaming activity. That shift has helped dozens of projects remain on the tally for significantly longer stays than might otherwise have been possible. Queen is one such act that has benefited greatly from this move, and it's another huge week for the legendary rock outfit on the Billboard 200. Queen's Greatest Hits slips slightly on the Billboard 200 this frame, falling from No. 52 to No. 58, but it's the length of time the title has spent on the competitive list that's truly worth noting. As of this frame, the compilation has remained on the 200-spot ranking for 650 weeks. The compilation is just the twelfth album in history to make it to 650 frames on the Billboard 200. The last title to do so was Good Kid, M.A.A.D City by Kendrick Lamar, which is only about two months ahead of Queen's set. It looks like the next sets to join this exclusive club will be Back in Black by AC/DC and Take Care by Drake. Both of those titles need just a couple more months to reach the milestone. Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon continues to reign as the longest-charting title in the history of the Billboard 200, as it's fat approaching 1,000 weeks on the tally. The group of artists that have reached 650 frames on the list includes stars like Eminem, Metallica, Journey, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Michael Jackson. Greatest Hits is by far Queen's longest-charting project on the Billboard 200. In fact, it's one of only two from the outfit to rack up triple-digit frames on the tally. The other is Greatest Hits I, II & III: The Platinum Collection, which is up to 150 frames — less than a quarter of the amount of time Greatest Hits has managed. The compilation can currently be found on multiple Billboard rankings this frame. Though it's largely on the decline — which is not unexpected for a decades-old release — from time to time, it rises near the top 10 on both the Top Rock & Alternative Albums and the Top Rock Albums charts. It also holds at No. 3 on the Top Hard Rock Albums chart. The title is about to crack 400 frames on the first two genre-specific lists, and it reached that milestone on the hard rock-only ranking months ago.

Kendrick Lamar Joins Michael Jackson And Pink Floyd In A Huge Billboard 200 Feat

Kendrick Lamar's Good Kid, M.A.A.D City hits 650 weeks on the Billboard 200, becoming the eleventh ... More longest-charting album in U.S. history. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - FEBRUARY 02: Kendrick Lamar accepts the Record of the Year award for "Not Like Us" onstage during the 67th Annual GRAMMY Awards at Arena on February 02, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo byfor The Recording Academy) Kendrick Lamar's latest full-length, GNX, has been a mainstay near the top of the Billboard 200 for months, while singles like 'Luther' with SZA and 'Squabble Up' continue to rack up streams and sales with ease. But even as his current era continues with great success, fans haven't let go of the rapper's older material. One of his earliest triumphs reaches a major milestone that puts him in an extremely elite category on one of Billboard's most competitive rankings. Good Kid, M.A.A.D City reaches a new peak — not in terms of peaks, but when it comes to longevity. The album has now spent 650 weeks on the Billboard 200, a feat that only a handful of titles in history have managed. According to Luminate, Good Kid, M.A.A.D City moved 18,600 equivalent units in the most recent tracking frame. Of that figure, 2,800 units came from pure album sales — enough to place the decade-old project smack in the middle of the Top Album Sales chart once again. Lamar is now also part of a very short list, as he becomes just the eleventh artist in U.S. history to see one of their albums spend 650 weeks on the Billboard 200. The all-time record remains untouched, and it's owned by Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon. That set is currently at 990 weeks on the tally and counting. That collection needs just 10 more frames to become the first to hit 1,000, a likely inevitability. Right behind Floyd on the list of the longest-charting titles on the Billboard 200 are Legend by Bob Marley and the Wailers (882 weeks) and Journey's Greatest Hits (852). The most recent addition to the 650-week club before Lamar was Michael Jackson's Thriller, which joined months ago and is now up to 673 weeks (and climbing). Good Kid, M.A.A.D City dips just one spot this frame to No. 36 on the Billboard 200. That's an impressive enough position on its own, but it's made even more so by the fact that it's not the only Lamar project living inside the top 40. DAMN. lands right behind it at No. 37, while GNX continues its run in the top five, slipping only slightly from No. 4 to No. 5 this time around. Across the six different Billboard tallies that still feature Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, the full-length mostly drops slightly this week, but not everywhere. The set actually rises on both the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and Top Rap Albums charts — two genre-specific rankings where Lamar has long been a dominant figure. Originally released in 2012, Good Kid, M.A.A.D City helped turn Lamar from a rising star into a Grammy-winning, critically adored household name. The full-length features now-iconic singles like 'Swimming Pools (Drank)' and 'Backseat Freestyle,' and it's clearly still connecting with a huge number of fans to this day.
