Microsoft nabs 24 DeepMind AI experts, Amar Subramanya is new AI VP
Microsoft has hired 24 engineers, researchers and product specialists from Google DeepMind, according to a report by Financial Times. Leading the wave of new hires is Amar Subramanya, former head of engineering for Google's Gemini chatbot, who recently joined Microsoft as corporate vice president of AI. Subramanya, who spent 16 years at Google, confirmed the move in a LinkedIn post on Tuesday. 'The culture here is refreshingly low ego yet bursting with ambition,' he wrote, praising Microsoft's team dynamics as he takes on his new role. Subramanya will be contributing to Microsoft's AI products like Copilot and Bing, under the company's consumer AI division. advertisement'Just one week into my new role, I'm already feeling deeply energised. The culture here is refreshingly low ego yet bursting with ambition. It reminds me of the best parts of a startup: fast-moving, collaborative, and deeply focused on building truly innovative, state-of-the-art foundation models to drive delightful AI-powered products such as Microsoft Copilot,' Subramanya's post reads. The hiring spree is part of a wider strategy led by Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of DeepMind and now Microsoft's head of consumer AI. Suleyman joined Microsoft in 2024 after the company acquired most of his startup, Inflection, in a $650 million 'acqui-hire' deal. Since then, he has built a powerful team by tapping into his former DeepMind network. Other notable DeepMind alumni joining Microsoft include engineering lead Sonal Gupta, senior engineer Adam Sadovsky, and product manager Tim Frank. CNBC reports that many of these hires have taken senior roles within the company. Sadovsky, for instance, left Google after nearly 18 years and is now a corporate VP at Microsoft rush for top AI talent is not unique to Microsoft. Big tech companies across the board are offering large incentives to attract researchers and engineers from rivals. OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman recently claimed that Meta had offered his staff $100 million signing bonuses, while Meta also poached Scale AI founder Alexandr Wang to lead its superintelligence team. There have been reports that the signing bonuses from Meta have gone up to $200 million, but the Mark Zuckerberg-led company has repeatedly denied the reports, and said that the numbers are exaggerated. That said, the competition between Microsoft and Google is particularly intense. Suleyman's move to Microsoft has put him in direct competition with his former DeepMind co-founder, Demis Hassabis, who continues to lead the lab at Google. Despite the departures, a person close to Google claims that DeepMind's attrition rate is still below the industry average and that it too has recruited talent from separate news, Microsoft has recently also made headlines in the healthcare AI space. Under Suleyman's leadership, the company recently unveiled a diagnostic tool it claims is four times more accurate than human doctors. The system, called MAI Diagnostic Orchestrator (MAI-DxO), combines the power of leading AI models like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini to analyse patient symptoms, run virtual tests, and suggest diagnoses. In trials, the AI outperformed a panel of human doctors on hundreds of complex medical Microsoft has been building its AI portfolio, the company also recently laid off around 9,000 employees, which was roughly 4 per cent of its global workforce, raising questions about the balance between cost-cutting and aggressive hiring in key areas like AI.- EndsMust Watch

Sitaare Zameen Par box office collection day 4: Aamir Khan's sports comedy has already beaten his notorious Rs 180 crore flop, hits Rs 60 crore mark
Aamir Khan's decision to publicly announce that his new film Sitaare Zameen Par will not be made available on a streaming platform in the near future has reaped good returns at the box office. The coming-of-age sports comedy, directed by RS Prasanna, has crossed the Rs 60 crore mark in four days at the domestic box office. On Monday, its fourth day of release, Sitaare Zameen Par dropped to single digits for the first time, after exceeded expectations in its debut weekend. It earned Rs 8.5 crore, which is slightly lower than its opening day collection of Rs 10.7 crore. Over the weekend, the film earned Rs 20.2 crore on Saturday, and Rs 27.25 crore on Saturday. Its opening weekend collection stood at Rs 58.15, comfortably crossing the Rs 50 crore mark in three days. Despite the significant drop on Monday, Sitaare Zameen Par has managed to not only cross the crucial Monday test, but also breached the lifetime domestic box office collection of Aamir's last film, Advait Chandan's Laal Singh Chaddha, which released in 2022. With no streaming premiere in sight and three more days sans any major competition, Sitaare Zameen Par should be able to take its haul past the Rs 100 crore mark this weekend. This Friday, on June 27, it'll begin competing with Vishal Furia's mythological horror film Maa, starring Kajol, which comes from the world of her husband Ajay Devgn's hit Shaitaan last year. 'Right now, it's a famine or feast situation at the box office. Either the films are not doing any business at all, or the one or two that people are loving are going through the roof, earning more than Rs 500 crore. The whole middle chunk has vanished. Why? Because I'm watching them on Netflix or Amazon,' Aamir told SCREEN in an interview before the film's release. 'Which is why I've come up with the decision to release Sitaare Zameen Par only in theatres. It'll premiere on television or streaming only after one year. My loyalty is with the theatres and my trust in my audience,' he added. The Multiplex Association of India (MAI) lauded Aamir's decision to release Sitaare Zameen Par exclusively in theatres. Taking to their X handle, the MAI shared an appreciation letter for Aamir, calling the actor's decision a 'significant moment' for all the cinema operators in India. In the letter shared on Thursday, MAI wrote, 'Multiplex Association of India (MAI) proudly applauds Mr. Aamir Khan for his visionary and resolute decision to release his film, Sitaare Zameen Par, exclusively in theatres on 20 June 2025. In an era wherein media and distribution platforms have become increasingly fragmented, Aamir Khan's choice to back the theatrical format reaffirms the enduring power of the big-screen experience.' Aamir Khan lauded by Multiplex Association of India for releasing Sitaare Zameen Par exclusively in theatres
Aamir Khan has earned huge praise from the Multiplex Association of India (MAI) for his decision to release his latest film, Sitaare Zameen Par, exclusively in cinemas. As the film opens in theatres today, the MAI released a lengthy statement on their social media handles, to hail the actor-producer for his commitment to the theatrical experience at a time when the industry has been facing increasing pressure from digital platforms and shrinking cinema-to-streaming windows. In an official statement, MAI President Kamal Gianchandani commended Khan's move as a 'visionary and resolute' step, saying, 'Aamir Khan has always put the audience first. His decision to bring Sitaare Zameen Par exclusively to theatres is a powerful message — that cinemas remain the heart of immersive, community-driven storytelling.' This note comes amid growing concerns over the declining exclusivity of theatrical releases, with many films heading to streaming platforms within weeks of their theatrical debut. Aamir, known for his selective filmography and long gaps between projects, also weighed in on the issue during a recent promotional event. He criticised the current trend of quick digital releases, blaming the industry for undermining its own value proposition. "Today, we've brought this situation upon ourselves,' Khan said. 'We ask audiences to come to theatres, but then tell them, 'It's okay if you don't — we'll bring the film to your home in eight weeks.' Why would they make the effort to step out then?' He went on to explain, 'Imagine I try to sell you a glass, and when you say no, I offer to deliver it to your home for free in eight weeks. You won't buy it. That's exactly what's happening with films today.' Sitaare Zameen Par, makes its theatrical debut today, June 20. According to early box office predictions, the film has recorded an advance booking of around Rs 4 crore gross and is expected to rake in an estimated Rs 7 crore on Day 1. The emotional drama, directed by RS Prasanna also stars Genelia Deshmukh in the lead role and introduces 10 newcomers — Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishna Varma, Samvit Desai, Vedant Sharma, Ayush Bhansali, Ashish Pendse, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Naman Mishra, and Simran Mangeshkar — adding fresh talent to the ensemble cast.
