Heartless killer seen pouring flammable liquid on pit bull before setting dog on fire in NYC

A heartless monster was caught on video 'dragging a motionless dog' to a Queens street before dousing the helpless pooch in a flammable liquid and setting him on fire, officials said Saturday. The brindle pit bull, left to burn, was found on 128 Street and 116 Avenue in South Ozone Park at 4:45 a.m. Thursday, cops said. A necropsy is being performed to determine if he was burned to death or killed in another way first, a source said. 4 Police released surveillance screen grabs that show the alleged dog killer casually walking through a bodega. When police arrived, they found the tiger-striped doggie 'lying in the street' dead, a police source said. Cops scoured for video to figure out what happened and released surveillance photos of the villain. They plan to charge the brute with arson, cops said. 4 A surveillance photo shows the alleged doggie burner walking past a white gate. 4 Police say the man poured some kind of flammable liquid on the pitbull before lighting him on fire. The alleged dog killer was last seen wearing a maroon sweatshirt with a 'Polo' logo in tan lettering across the chest, gray pants and a light brown designer MCM backpack, which sells for between $500 and $1,000, cops said. The surveillance photos show him in a nearby bodega and walking past a white iron fence. 4 The incident happened near a homeless shelter on South Conduit Ave. KEVIN C DOWNS Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). Methodist Church praises Govt's financial aid, says it timely and inclusive

KUALA LUMPUR: The Methodist Church in Malaysia (MCM) has expressed gratitude for the financial assistance announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Wednesday (July 23), describing it as timely and inclusive. In a statement on Thursday (July 24), MCM Bishop Dr T. Jeyakumar said that while some may downplay the significance of the aid, it should not be overlooked that the government is making a major financial commitment to support its people. "I am truly thankful for the announcement made by the Prime Minister," he said. He praised the government's decision to make the assistance available to all Malaysians, regardless of race or religion. "The amount may not be much, but at least the government is stepping in to help, rather than telling us to stay home and dip into our own EPF savings," he added.

No support for reinstating JNU Entrance Examination for PhD admissions: VC

NEW DELHI: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Vice-Chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit responded to the ongoing student protests on Friday, stating there is no support from any academic school or centre for reinstating the JNU Entrance Examination (JNUEE) for PhD admissions. Pandit clarified that the decision to adopt the CUET and UGC-NET as admission routes was unanimously endorsed by the university's deans and that her responsibility is to implement these academic decisions. The Vice-Chancellor's statement came as the JNU Students' Union (JNUSU) entered the third week of its indefinite hunger strike, which began on June 26. The student body has been demanding the reinstatement of JNUEE, automatic hostel extensions for research scholars, an increase in the Merit-cum-Means (MCM) scholarship, and the withdrawal of disciplinary actions against protesting students. Despite the worsening health of some protesters, the administration has remained firm. In a statement issued on the university's official social media handle, Pandit expressed concern for students' well-being but emphasised that the policy changes cannot be made unilaterally. She reiterated that 'the administration is open to dialogue and willing to engage with students through institutional and democratic channels.' The JNUSU, however, has remained resolute, accusing the administration of 'centralised and undemocratic' decision-making. Student leaders also criticised the decision to host the Vice-President during the ongoing protests, alleging that student voices are being ignored. They warned that protests would escalate if their demands are not met. As the hunger strike entered its 15th day, tensions remained high, with student organisations like NSUI, AISA, and SFI showing solidarity with the protesters.

A Tragic Accident And Life Insurance Led This Guam Native To The Top Of A $6 Billion Firm

Lorrie Baldevia Courtesy of AssuredPartners Name: Lorrie Baldevia Firm: AssuredPartners Location: Seattle, WA Total Value of Policies: $6.3 billion Background: Lorrie Baldevia describes her connection to insurance as deeply personal. The eldest of five children, she lost her father in a tragic construction accident at age 12 in Guam. Her mother raised the family on her own and was able to do so thanks to a life insurance policy—an experience that would ultimately shape her career. 'It gave us a kind of financial security we wouldn't have had otherwise,' she says. Baldevia moved to the United States at 17 on a full scholarship to Seattle University and worked multiple jobs while studying marketing, finance, and international business. After a series of early roles in financial services, she joined MCM, working her way up from administrative support to partner and after the firm was acquired, president. Building Relationships: Baldevia leads a 15-person team that serves some 7,000 clients, including roughly 200 families she works with directly. Most of her clients are private business owners seeking help with succession planning, executive benefits, or protecting their assets. 'We're not just planning for the individual—we're helping transition family businesses or protect against long-term risk,' she says. 'Often, they're looking for someone who understands both the personal and professional side of those risks.' Competitive Edge: Baldevia says her practice stands out because of the ability to handle both business and personal insurance needs in one place—everything from buy-sell planning and executive benefits to insuring homes, cars and collectibles. 'Most firms either focus on wealth or insurance,' she says. 'We do both—in a way that looks at the full picture.' Her team also collaborates frequently with financial advisors and RIAs across the country in order to help them add insurance solutions to their clients' broader planning strategies. Investment Philosophy/Strategy: Baldevia takes a pragmatic approach when it comes to insurance planning. 'I'm not here to sell you something—I'm here to help you buy what makes sense,' she says. She starts with conversations about risk and what needs protecting. That can lead to term insurance for temporary coverage, or permanent solutions for long-term planning. 'Buying insurance is a process,' she explains. 'You might start with coverage through your employer, then build on it over time as your life and responsibilities grow.' For business owners, insurance can also become a financial asset that they can use to help address future tax liabilities or transition risk. Biggest Challenge: 'I used to dwell on things that weren't as important,' Baldevia says. 'Now I think more strategically, and I try to mentor others to do the same.' She has focused on encouraging women and people from underrepresented backgrounds to enter the field. 'It's a great business that offers real stability—but the people doing the work should reflect the people we're serving,' she says. Best Advice: Don't overthink it: 'Start with what's available through your job,' says Baldevia. 'A lot of people think of insurance as something you'll get around to someday, but just having something in place is a big step.' Forbes
