Mason Miller trade: Padres land elite pitcher in seismic deal with Athletics

In a startling move that sends the game's most dominant reliever across the state and to another league, the Athletics have agreed to trade Mason Miller to the San Diego Padres, perhaps signaling a greater revamp to come at Petco Park. Miller, 26, has struck out 14.2 batters per nine innings in his two full seasons as a reliever, and this year has posted a 1.01 WHIP while fanning 59 batters in 38 ⅓ innings and nailing down 20 saves. The Padres also acquired left-hander JP Sears, a workmanlike back-end rotation presence who has a 4.95 ERA in 22 starts this season. MLB TRADE DEADLINE: Grading every deal on baseball's deadlne day While Miller might have been seen as a franchise cornerstone as the A's make their way from Oakland to their Yolo County stopover in Sacramento all the way to Las Vegas – perhaps by 2028 – the club clearly saw too much upside in San Diego's return. San Diego paid a stiff price to pry Miller from the A's, sending them 18-year-old high Class A shortstop Leo DeVries, a consensus top five prospect in the game and the Padres' top trade chip. The Padres, meanwhile, are perched just three games behind the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West, and hold the No. 3 NL wild card spot. Reports indicated the club might be willing to buy and sell this deadline, and perhaps flip All-Star closer Robert Suárez to gain payroll flexibility. Now, they have the roster latitude to do so. Or, they could keep Suárez and pair him with Miller alongside an utterly dominant bullpen featuring All-Stars Jason Adam and Adrian Morejon along with Jeremiah Estrada. The Padres will also send RHP Braden Nett, RHP Henry Báez and RHP Eduarniel Nuñez to the A's in the deal. (UPDATED) Phillies Pull Off Blockbuster Trade for Jhoan Duran Without Giving Up Top Prospect

The Philadelphia Phillies pulled off the biggest coup of the trade deadline, acquiring closer Jhoan Duran from the Minnesota Twins for pitcher Mick Abel and catching prospect Eduardo Tait, according to multiple reports. The Phillies didn't have to part with prospects Aidan Miller and Justin Crawford — and more importantly — Andrew Painter, whom the Twins initially wanted in a deal for Duran, USA Today's Bob Nightengale previously reported. Minnesota blinked and took a package of Abel ( No. 92 prospect) and Tait ( No. 56 prospect). Abel was the Phillies' No. 6 prospect and made six starts with the team, posting a 5.04 ERA before being sent back down to Triple-A. He also out-dueled Pittsburgh Pirates starter Paul Skenes in his MLB debut. Tait is an 18-year-old catcher who has a .753 OPS and 11 home runs in 82 games across Single-A and High-A this season. Duran is a dominant reliever who consistently throws 100 mph-plus. He has a 2.01 ERA in 49 appearances and 53 strikeouts in 49 1/3 innings. He also has the swing-and-miss stuff the Phillies coveted, ranking in the 81st percentile in chase percentage (31.1) and 86th percentile in whiff percentage (30.9). Duran won't be a free agent until after the 2027 season, so the Phillies have their new closer for at least the next two-and-a-half seasons. The Phillies were also reportedly interested in Athletics closer Mason Miller before the Duran deal. The Phillies bullpen was in dire straits and got the dramatic makeover it desperately needed at the trade deadline with Duran. Philadelphia relievers rank 23rd in baseball in ERA (4.33) and 22nd in batting average allowed (.252). Their big free-agent acquisition in Jordan Romano has a 6.81 ERA and lefty reliever Jose Alvarado is still serving an 80-game PED suspension and is ineligible to pitch in the postseason. Bryce Harper Willing to Switch Positions if Phillies Swing Trade for Two-Time All-Star

Philadelphia Phillies superstar Bryce Harper is willing to move off first base if the team can pull off a blockbuster trade for a two-time All-Star slugger. Harper told Todd Zolecki he would go back to the outfield if the Phillies end up acquiring Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez, who has 36 home runs on the season. In that scenario, Alec Bohm would slide over to first. 'If it ever gets to that point, I'm willing,' Harper explained to Zolecki. 'Whenever [Dave] Dombrowski gives me a call or if that right player comes aboard, yeah. 'I played it for a long time. Obviously, I haven't in a long time as well. If we did have that communication, obviously on days where Bohm or Suárez don't play, I'd like to stick at first just for reps and things like that. I don't want to lose first base, just the way I play over there.' This isn't the first time Harper told the Phillies he would switch positions for the betterment of the team. While recovering from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in 2023, Harper learned how to play first base after Rhys Hoskins went down with a season-ending knee injury in spring training. Since May of that year, Harper has been the everyday Phillies first baseman. Harper also offered to move off first base in the offseason while Pete Alonso was still a free agent. 'If it's even a possibility, I'll do anything for this team to win games,' Harper said. 'I don't think [Dombrowski] would move me just to move me. I would think they would get the right player. I don't think it's going to be something that's not right for our team.' Dombrowski has previously said he didn't envision moving Harper back to right field following his elbow surgery, but if they're able to add a bat like Suarez, things could change. Suarez, a free agent at the end of the season, suffered an injury scare Monday night when he was hit in the right hand by a 96 mph fastball by Detroit Tigers reliever Will Vest and left the game. X-rays, CT scans and an MRI all came back negative, but he's not in the lineup for Tuesday's game. If the Diamondbacks third baseman lands in Philadelphia at the trade deadline, the Phillies would have a strong one through four in Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber, Harper and Suarez. Mets Reportedly 'In The Mix' For Athletics All-Star Closer Mason Miller

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Mets could be on their way to shocking the baseball world. In an article for The Athletic, MLB insider Ken Rosenthal is reporting the Mets are keeping an eye on Athletics closer Mason Miller and are "in the mix" to acquire him. "The Athletics, in their talks for closer Mason Miller, have focused on teams with top-end young pitching," wrote Rosenthal. "But whether they find a club to meet their price remains to be seen. ... The New York Mets, whose farm system includes perhaps more elite young arms than the Yankees', are also a team in the mix." HOUSTON, TEXAS - JULY 24: Mason Miller #19 of the Athletics pitches in the ninth inning against the Houston Astros at Daikin Park on July 24, 2025 in Houston, Texas. HOUSTON, TEXAS - JULY 24: Mason Miller #19 of the Athletics pitches in the ninth inning against the Houston Astros at Daikin Park on July 24, 2025 in Houston, Mets' farm system is filled with high-level pitching prospects as four of the top 10 are right-handed pitchers. Two of them, Jonah Tong and Brandon Sproat, have drawn a lot of attention this season for performing well in the minor leagues. As Rosenthal also pointed out, Miller has 4 1/2 seasons of team control left. To put it simply, it will take a lot for the Athletics to consider moving on from him. Rosenthal reported the A's asked Philadelphia for Andrew Painter, the No. 8 prospect in all of baseball, per rankings. New York would likely have to move on from four to five prospects in its top 10 to even have a chance at acquiring Miller. Miller's rise to professional baseball has been one of the biggest stories as he makes a name for himself. The 26-year-old closer, who started his career at Division III Waynesburg University, is one of the hardest-throwing arms in baseball. Previous reports have indicated the team is unlikely to move Miller, but a last-minute offer could change things for the Athletics.
