The Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier's Department (Law, State-Federal Relations and MA63) said the Sarawak government is still waiting for the main committee to convene the next meeting. 'There is no fixed date yet. Negotiations on MA63 are ongoing. We are waiting for the main committee to call for the next meeting,' she said. Sharifah Hasidah was responding to a question from reporters on the next MA63 meeting when met at the closing ceremony of the Maal Hijrah 1447H/2025M Festival at Masjid Jamek Negeri Sarawak today. When asked about the next agenda following the issue of redelineation, she reiterated that Sarawak remains firm in its demand for greater parliamentary representation. 'As for the 35 per cent representation in Parliament, this is something we continue to advocate and fight for. 'There will be continued negotiations and in-depth discussions on this demand. As of now, there is no final decision, but we will continue to pursue it,' she said. Sharifah Hasidah added that all unresolved claims under MA63 will continue to be discussed through existing formal platforms. 'All claims under MA63 that have not been resolved or finalised will continue to be discussed through the formal platforms that have been established. 'We will wait, that is all I can say for now,' she added.

Struggle requires sacrifice: Chief Minister

Kota Kinabalu: Muslims are urged to embrace the spirit of Hijrah (migration) as a foundation for strengthening unity and determination in facing increasingly complex new challenges in today's demanding world, particularly in the face of global instability and international geopolitical turmoil. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the crises engulfing several regions in the Middle East – including Gaza, Iran, Lebanon and Syria – are not merely regional issues but have significant implications on global political stability and the wellbeing of the entire ummah. 'Ongoing wars and the Zionist Israeli military attacks on Islamic territories not only violate international law but also blatantly infringe upon fundamental human rights. 'This is no minor issue. It has the potential to reshape history and global geopolitics,' he said at the State-level Maal Hijrah 1447H/2025M Celebration Assembly held at Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), Friday. Hajiji stressed that Muslims cannot afford to remain passive in the face of new challenges such as Islamophobia, ongoing humanitarian crises and the worsening global economic pressure driven by the Western-dominated 'New World Order' agenda. 'We are facing challenges to the very civilisation of the ummah which demand unity, unwavering faith, inner strength and collective commitment. We cannot afford to be weak, divided or merely stand by as spectators,' he said. He said the spirit of Hijrah exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad SAW must serve as a guide in building a Madani society – one rooted in faith, knowledge, ethics, justice and humanity. He said the development of a Madani Ummah cannot succeed without a shift in mindset and a willingness to undergo a value-based transformation – from weakness to strength, from backwardness to progress and from division to unity. 'Hijrah is a struggle. And every struggle requires sacrifice – whether in attitude, time, energy, finances or principles. This is the spirit that must be embraced as we embark on the new Hijrah year of 1447,' he said. Hajiji also called on the people to embrace Hijrah through the pursuit of knowledge and technology, cultivating a culture of innovation, strengthening unity and enhancing charitable deeds for the collective welfare of the ummah. He urged the people to strengthen their resolve and intentions for the new Hijrah year by adopting change as a cultural foundation for personal, family, community and State success. 'The Maal Hijrah celebration is not merely about commemorating history but must serve as a catalyst for transformation and renewal towards excellence. Let us all embody the spirit of Hijrah and work together to develop the ummah in an inclusive and holistic way,' he said. Veteran politician Datuk Datu Amir Kahar Datu Mustapha who was active from 1986 to 2008 and once served as Deputy Chief Minister as well as State Agriculture and Fisheries Minister was selected as the male Maal Hijrah Figure. He received RM20,000 in cash, a trophy and a certificate. For the female Maal Hijrah Figure, the award went to Datuk Seri Norsuadah Basah, a former newsreader, announcer, and producer active from 1973 to 1978. She also received RM20,000, a trophy and a certificate. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Penang honours Islamic astronomy expert as Maal Hijrah personality

GEORGE TOWN: Datuk Dr Abdul Halim Abdul Aziz, a distinguished expert in Islamic astronomy (falak), has been named Penang's Maal Hijrah Personality in conjunction with the state-level Maal Hijrah 1447H celebrations today. The 67-year-old scholar, a former lecturer at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), was honoured by the Yang Dipertua Negeri of Penang, Tun Ramli Ngah Talib. The award included a certificate of appreciation, a trophy, complimentary prizes, and RM10,000 in cash. 'I'm truly touched and didn't expect to receive this award today, as I wasn't informed beforehand. Alhamdulillah, I'm grateful to Allah for this honour,' Abdul Halim told reporters after the ceremony. A member of the Falak Experts Panel under JAKIM and the Penang State Falak Committee, Abdul Halim pioneered a more accurate multi-point method for calculating prayer times. Unlike the traditional single-point system, his approach considers multiple coordinates within a zone, selecting the latest time as the reference. 'Penang was among the first states to implement the method 10 years ago, and it was later adopted by several other states, including Perak and Negeri Sembilan,' he said. After retiring in 2018, Abdul Halim founded the Lisafa Centre, an educational institution promoting lifelong learning for adults. The centre has partnered with Indonesia's Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University to offer master's and doctoral programs in Islamic studies to professionals from diverse fields. At the same event, Datuk Dr Mohamed Amir Shah Abdul Aziz, a senior oncologist, received the Da'wah Icon Award, while Prof Dr Noor Inayah Yaakub was honoured with the Special Award.

Melaka first state to introduce 'lafaz taklik' document in Braille

MELAKA: Melaka has become the first state in the country to provide the "lafaz taklik' document in Braille for the visually impaired (PwD) community, as part of efforts to facilitate the process of declaring marriage agreement during their solemnisation. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusof said the initiative marks a significant step towards inclusive empowerment in Syariah legislation, as it not only allows PwD couples to fully understand their marriage vows, but also reflects the commitment of religious authorities and marriage institutions to ensure justice and inclusivity for all segments of society. "Congratulations to the Melaka Islamic Religious Department (Jaim) for its efforts to support the PwD community by diversifying initiatives that simplify procedures for them to understand and declare taklik through Braille. "This, in turn, serves as an example of how the values of Hijrah can be translated into reform and improvement, bringing religion and Islamic teachings closer to every level of society, regardless of ability or condition,' he said. He told reporters this after the state-level Maal Hijrah 1447H/2025M celebration themed "Membangun Ummah MADANI' at Masjid Al-Hakeem, Kampung Tehel, here on Thursday night (June 26). The ceremony, officiated by Melaka Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam, also saw the launch of the Guidelines and Procedures for the Management of Marriage, Divorce and Reconciliation among Muslims in Melaka. Ab Rauf also said the state government has allocated RM86,000 to 12 recipients of the 1447H/2025M Maal Hijrah Awards in recognition of their contributions and service in strengthening the development of the Muslim community in the state. "The recipient of the Abu Bakar As-Siddiq Award received an umrah package worth RM10,000 and RM10,000 in cash, while the other 11 awardees each received a 'Pakej Kembara Ilmiah' worth RM3,000 and RM3,000 in cash,' he added.- Bernama
