McDonald's is bringing back fan-favourite Happy Meal with an ultra rare toy

There's something about a McDonald's Happy Meal that turns us all into big kids, no matter our actual age. It's probably something to do with the nostalgia of collecting toys in the 90s and the exciting collabs that keep on launching – like Pokémon and Minecraft. And the latest Happy Meal announcement will undoubtedly be no exception, as the fast food chain has just revealed that a fan-favourite is returning. After two years, Squishmallows are back in the iconic red boxes from July 2, with 15 cute little plushies to collect from the fast food chain. And there's an ultra rare one customers will be hunting for that's not available in any other stores yet. The rarest one you can get is Halley, a never-before-seen Intergalactic Axolotl that's exclusively available in McDonald's meals. Other toys available include a pickle named Charles, a cactus known as Maritza, a cat called Cam, Babs the penguin and Junie the banana. Each Squishmallow toy has its own backstory and 'personality' according to the brand and they have proved incredibly popular in McDonald's branches around the world. The new Squishmallows, including Halley, launched in the US in May, and customers went wild over the toys. They've also recently been available in New Zealand and Australia where they caused a stir too. 'I need them all,' proclaimed @ on Instagram, as @_mysticmack_ said: 'They're so cute!!' Similarly, @ninamarie788 admitted: 'Just left my full-blown adult job to get a Happy Meal.' And @imgianning commented: 'I won't stop until I get them all.' Others branded the Squishmallows the 'best' Happy Meal toys McDonald's have ever had, while some thought they were 'the best toys in a long time'. Little ones will also have the exciting opportunity to meet their favourite Squishmallow characters as two of the most popular, Cam and Patty, will be making special appearances in McDnald's restaurants. During these visits, families can enjoy interactive activieis and collect trading cards. More information can be found at For those who don't want to collect the toys, there's always the option to order a Happy Meal with a book instead. The current book included will be Little People, Big Dreams. And if this weren't exciting enough, this week also sees a brand new item added to the McDonald's menu in the UK. For the first time in 50 years, Maccies is adding a Double Filet-O-Fish to the menu for fans of the quirky burger. More Trending The new product, which will cost £5.29 individually, or £7.39 as part of an Everyday Value Meal, features two Pollock fish patties in crispy breadcrumbs, melted cheese and tartare sauce in a steamed bun. To celebrate the launch, you'll be able to get your hands on the new item for just £2 all day on July 1, when you order via the McDonald's App – which is less than half price. And that's not all, a vintage character is coming out of retirement to celebrate the new burger. Phil A. O'Fish has returned to settle the debate of how to pronounce the product name correctly. McDonald's just made major change to the Filet-O-Fish for first time in 50 years

Filet-O-Fish fans, your time has finally come! That's because McDonald's in the UK is introducing a brand new twist on the iconic burger, for the first time since it launched here. After 50 years of it being a Maccies staple, you'll finally be able to order an even bigger version of your favourite menu item, as the fast food chain is releasing a Double Filet-O-Fish. The new product, which will cost £5.29 individually, or £7.39 as part of an Everyday Value Meal, features two Pollock fish patties in crispy breadcrumbs, melted cheese and tartare sauce in a steamed bun. For those keen to get their hands on it, the Double Filet-O-Fish will be launching nationwide from July 1, and joins other new items like the Big Arch in the line-up. However, this won't be a one-off or limited-edition item, it'll be a permanent edition to the menu. So if you've ever wondered if it's Fil-LAY or Fil-LET, there's now an official answer… And we're sorry to say that if you've been saying Fil-LET, you've been getting it wrong, as it's actually Fil-LAY. But at least now you know, so when you go to order one soon, you won't butcher the name. According to McDonald's the iconic fish sandwich dates back to 1962 in the USA, when Lou Groen, a Maccies Franchisee from Cincinnati noticed a decrease in sales on Fridays. This was because the restaurant was located in a predominantly Roman Catholic neighbourhood and catholics abstain from eating meat on Fridays. As such, Lou convinced McDonald's to test a breaded whitefish sandwich. The fast food chain initially wasn't keen on the idea, as fish required a more complicated cooking process. McDonald's wanted to instead launch a Hula Burger – a slice of grilled pineapple and cheese on a bun – and founder Ray Krok agreed they'd launch the Hula Burger and Filet-O-Fish on a Friday and whichever sold better would be added to the menu. The final score? Hula Burger: 6, Filet-O-Fish: 350. And the rest, as they say, is history. Filet-O-Fish fans have been sharing the excitement for the product on Instagram, but also in a revived Facebook group from 2012 that has gone viral. The Filet-O-Fish Facebook Society has been flooded with 3,000 new members and anecdotes, with people hailing the burger the 'best sandwich going', some proclaiming that 'one is never enough', they 'live for them' and 'adore them'. More Trending In response to the news about the Double Filet-O-Fish, Amy Louise Bryan said: 'I FEEL SEEN! Breaming with excitement!' While Rebecca Lo commenteD: 'Ahhhh!! I'm soo happy!!!! Best news ever!! Going to order two Filet-O-Fish now and turn it into a Big Fish Mac, to celebrate! The 1st of July is too far away.' And Rebecca Man wrote: 'Beyond excited for this. Finally!!!!' View More » However, some have already started begging McDonald's to release a triple version of the fish sandwich. Whether they'll get their wish remains to be seen… Do you have a story to share? US Cuba has only one McDonald's - and it's different from every other Maccies

There is only one McDonald's in the whole of Cuba and it is placed in Guantanamo Bay - though none of the local people can take a trip to it for a Big Mac McDonald's golden arches are a global phenomenon, but one of the most bizarre locations for this fast-food giant is in Cuba – and it's not frequented by Cubans craving a Big Mac. Nestled in Guantanamo Bay, where the US still exerts territorial control, this particular McDonald's opened its doors in 1986. Strikingly different from other outlets, this McDonald's sits adjacent to the notorious detention camp, serving only the base's personnel. ‌ With some of the world's most dangerous alleged terrorists just a stone's throw away, it's probably the last place you'd expect to see a Maccies. ‌ Despite the welcoming presence of a sizeable Ronald McDonald and the tropical backdrop of palm trees, the restaurant is also encircled by barbed wire. McDonald's has stated that they have no intentions of expanding their presence in Cuba, suggesting this might be the only branch for many years to come. Philip Johnson of New York University has referred to it as a "site of comfort and nostalgia" for those stationed at the base. A 2002 newsletter remarked: "McDonald's: the name alone is synonymous with the fast food industry, and the legendary tastes of the various delights served here are all seasoned with years of tradition." The internet's been abuzz over a TikTok influencer's claim that Guantanamo Bay harbours the best McDonald's branch, with Coast Guard member Sarah dishing the details to her followers: "Rumor has it that the McDonald's in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, is the best, so I am in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba — and we are going to try the McDonald's." Sarah raved about the wings being "fire" and a "ten out of ten," while asserting the crispy chicken sandwich was "so much better than in the United States." ‌ Dating back to 1889, when the US helped dismiss the Spanish, Guantanamo Bay Naval Base remains a slice of America in Cuba, intriguingly existing beyond both Cuban and certain American laws, as noted by elEconomista. Despite Cuba's socialist stance, which typically shuns capitalist icons like McDonald's, Guantanamo Bay also plays host to other American fast-food giants such as Subway, KFC, Taco Bell, and even houses a Starbucks coffee shop, complete with a Pizza Hut Express. ‌ Seemingly paradoxical, profits from these capitalist enterprises are ploughed into welfare activities, boosting morale among US service personnel and their relatives stationed there. A significant chapter in the history of Guantanamo Bay dates back to 1903, when a treaty saw Cuba leasing it to America, with the US acknowledging Cuba's national sovereignty in return. However, in the present day, the stunning Caribbean nation disputes the legitimacy of this treaty, viewing it as an occupied territory. ‌ Despite this disagreement, American personnel continue to be stationed there, and notably, numerous suspected terrorists were detained there post-9/11 due to the absence of laws permitting their imprisonment without trial.

Aussies stunned to learn what Macca's is called in the UK

When it comes to Australian slang, nothing's more iconic than calling McDonald's 'Macca's'. However, people are just realising that our friends in the UK have a very different name for the beloved burger chain. While you might cringe upon hearing it and hope it never reaches our shores, it turns out it might already be infiltrating its way into our language. It all began when someone asked the r/Australia Reddit forum this week whether we have subtly changed the way we refer to the fast-food giant Down Under. 'So I have this friend – Australian born, who recently started calling Macca's 'Maccies' and it's driving me insane. I thought Macca's was the universally agreed-upon name we have down here,' they wrote. 'Now every time I hear 'Maccies' I throw up a little in my mouth. They're a teacher, so is this something the kids are calling McDonald's these days?' 'Genuinely curious – am I out of the loop here or is this just an isolated case of someone who f**king lost it?' The community outrage was immediate, with some taking the attack on our language extremely personally. 'Ex-friend hopefully,' said one. 'This is unacceptable behaviour.' 'F**k that guy,' another foul-mouthed comment read. 'Tell them I hate them,' said another user. Then others revealed the source of the confusion, explaining that it's actually British slang. 'I've only heard Poms call it that,' revealed one. 'Maccies is the British abbreviation,' someone else confirmed. 'We also call it Maccie D's, so I guess it gets shortened to Maccies.' I, being a journalist with integrity, had to get to the bottom of this so I spoke to one of the few Brits on our team who confirmed to me over Google Chat: 'Yes, we call it Maccies.' Commenters weren't happy about this revelation. 'This is un-Australian,' declared one. 'Send them to jail,' argued a second, while another called the move 'abhorrent'. 'If this is a new trend, it's definitely not going to be used by me,' admitted a third. The hatred was visceral. Perhaps it's the 'ie' at the end. It feels … unnecessary … and out of context? Macca's, on the other hand, feels like a natural extension of how we abbreviate everything else in our country. It rolls off the tongue, like servo or bottle-o. It feels casual, cool, effortless, just how a Macca's run should be. In contrast, Maccies feels … childish? Embarrassing almost. Oh, you're going to Maccies? What are you, 12? Grow up. But hey, this isn't just my opinion. The Reddit jury has spoken.
