US Cuba has only one McDonald's - and it's different from every other Maccies

Daily Mirror22-06-2025
There is only one McDonald's in the whole of Cuba and it is placed in Guantanamo Bay - though none of the local people can take a trip to it for a Big Mac
McDonald's golden arches are a global phenomenon, but one of the most bizarre locations for this fast-food giant is in Cuba – and it's not frequented by Cubans craving a Big Mac. Nestled in Guantanamo Bay, where the US still exerts territorial control, this particular McDonald's opened its doors in 1986.
Strikingly different from other outlets, this McDonald's sits adjacent to the notorious detention camp, serving only the base's personnel.

With some of the world's most dangerous alleged terrorists just a stone's throw away, it's probably the last place you'd expect to see a Maccies.

Despite the welcoming presence of a sizeable Ronald McDonald and the tropical backdrop of palm trees, the restaurant is also encircled by barbed wire.
McDonald's has stated that they have no intentions of expanding their presence in Cuba, suggesting this might be the only branch for many years to come.
Philip Johnson of New York University has referred to it as a "site of comfort and nostalgia" for those stationed at the base.
A 2002 newsletter remarked: "McDonald's: the name alone is synonymous with the fast food industry, and the legendary tastes of the various delights served here are all seasoned with years of tradition."
The internet's been abuzz over a TikTok influencer's claim that Guantanamo Bay harbours the best McDonald's branch, with Coast Guard member Sarah dishing the details to her followers: "Rumor has it that the McDonald's in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, is the best, so I am in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba — and we are going to try the McDonald's."
Sarah raved about the wings being "fire" and a "ten out of ten," while asserting the crispy chicken sandwich was "so much better than in the United States."

Dating back to 1889, when the US helped dismiss the Spanish, Guantanamo Bay Naval Base remains a slice of America in Cuba, intriguingly existing beyond both Cuban and certain American laws, as noted by elEconomista.
Despite Cuba's socialist stance, which typically shuns capitalist icons like McDonald's, Guantanamo Bay also plays host to other American fast-food giants such as Subway, KFC, Taco Bell, and even houses a Starbucks coffee shop, complete with a Pizza Hut Express.

Seemingly paradoxical, profits from these capitalist enterprises are ploughed into welfare activities, boosting morale among US service personnel and their relatives stationed there.
A significant chapter in the history of Guantanamo Bay dates back to 1903, when a treaty saw Cuba leasing it to America, with the US acknowledging Cuba's national sovereignty in return.
However, in the present day, the stunning Caribbean nation disputes the legitimacy of this treaty, viewing it as an occupied territory.

Despite this disagreement, American personnel continue to be stationed there, and notably, numerous suspected terrorists were detained there post-9/11 due to the absence of laws permitting their imprisonment without trial.

These are the 10 best cities for sober travel in the U.S.

We can all be thankful that sober travel is on the rise. While drinking a beautiful cocktail while light filters through your glass at sunset constitutes many a travel photo—and while a raucous bar or club scene may also be part of your itinerary—the fact is that alert and appreciative experiences (i.e., sober experiences) make for a stronger vacation. And for those in recovery, it's not just a preference; it's a requirement. A mocktail can be a band-aid, but a better alternative is to seek out different activities that keep you away from that shelf of glistening bottles. A new study from Sana Lake Recovery has just come out that analyzes and ranks American cities for their availability of sober-friendly activities. Some examples of these activities include hiking trails, fitness studios that welcome drop-ins, museums and even AA meetings. The first city on the list of best places to travel sober is St. Louis, Missouri. Along with 123 hiking trails and 120 fitness studios to choose from, the city boasts several greenspaces to bring a picnic and connect with nature. At Forest Park, visit a 75-foot waterfall, see animals at the zoo and enjoy the World's Fair Pavilion. St. Louis has 10 mocktail bars, such as the Sans Bar STL, whose charming motto is 'shaken not slurred.' (Sans is French for 'without,' which is fitting). Museums like the Saint Louis Art Museum and the Missouri History Museum also fill your vacation days with interesting experiences. Second on the best sober cities list is Oakland, California. Hiking here is amazing—in the Oakland hills you'll find aromatic quietude in the trails that wind through redwood groves. And for a quick urban walk, Lake Merritt's circumference is about 3 miles. There are more than 300 hiking trails, 120 fitness studios and 33 different museums to stimulate your travel. Oakland has five mocktail bars and two gorgeous, restored movie palaces (the Fox and the Paramount) where you can take tours or see live shows, depending on their schedule. Coming in third is Portland, Oregon, which has the most mocktail bars of any city on the list: 11. It also has 270 hiking trails to choose from, some of which are found in the 5,200-acre Forest Park—one of the largest urban forests in the country. Eighty miles of trails run beneath its sun-dappled canopy. Portland offers 122 fitness studios and 34 museums, including the Portland Art Museum and Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. We also love the Food Truck Park that offers fun browsing and even more fun eating. With not too much effort, you can locate experiences in most cities that support a booze-free vacation. Look for drop-in yoga or Zumba classes, bring your tennis racket, get a NARM membership to visit museums for free wherever you travel and take time to organize a picnic in nature. Here are the top 10 cities for sober travel: 1. St. Louis, Missouri 2. Oakland, California 3. Portland, Oregon 4. Minneapolis, Minnesota 5. Seattle, Washington 6. Colorado Springs, Colorado 7. Tucson, Arizona 8. Miami, Florida 9. Tampa, Florida 10. San Francisco, California

Spain's new holiday laws 'could see collapse' in UK tourists visiting the country

Experts today warned the new rules will deter Brits from buying holiday homes in Spain - and could see prices go up by a fifth New Spanish legislation could lead to a 'collapse' in UK tourists visiting, according to experts. The Spanish government has introduced a new law requiring all landlords offering properties as holiday homes or seasonal lets to register in a new short-term rental registry system designed to monitor them. However, industry insiders have suggested that Brits may choose to purchase holiday homes elsewhere due to these stringent regulations, and tourists may reconsider as prices could potentially skyrocket. ‌ This week, from July 1, landlords face a fine of up to €500,000 if they fail to apply for a new rental code. The new law primarily targets rentals under 60 days, which Spain classifies as "short-term rentals." Rentals longer than 60 days are not impacted by these new restrictions. ‌ Property experts today warned that thousands of short-term rentals, including Airbnb, could be withdrawn from the market. There are fears that the laws could increase prices by up to 20% in popular areas and limit options for holidaymakers who might be forced into hotels instead. They also stated that with "nearly half of the rental applications still stuck in bureaucratic purgatory, thousands of Brits face being locked out of the lucrative short-term market, their properties suddenly unable to earn their keep." A new register will require all properties used for tourism and short-term holiday rentals to have a mandatory registration code to operate legally. Spain's Ministry of Housing has disclosed that a total of 199,686 applications have been submitted so far, predominantly for tourist rentals. Out of these, 90,046 registrations have been given the green light, while 17,596 were turned down. Meanwhile, just over 92,000 registrations are still pending. Pete Mugleston, Mortgage Advisor & Managing Director at Online Mortgage Advisor, said Brits letting out properties will look to Italy, Greece or Portugal instead of Spain. ‌ He continued: "If you're a Brit with a property in Spain that you let out through Airbnb, these changes will have you pulling your hair out. The Spanish authorities are doing this to combat locals being priced out of the housing market, due to the explosion in the short-term rental market in recent years. "This will add another layer of complexity to renting out your property and will more than likely be the final straw for many, as they choose to sell rather than rent. 'The result is that Brits looking to purchase a holiday home abroad to rent out will now turn their attention to other countries, such as Italy, Greece or Portugal, where regulations aren't as strict.' ‌ Tony Redondo, Founder at Cosmos Currency Exchange, said prices could be raised by up to 20% in hotspots due to the law. He added: "Spain's new Airbnb law will delist thousands of short-term rentals. British buy to let owners face income loss when the unlicensed properties are removed. Those who try and register will face higher compliance costs or have to sell. 'Pivoting to mid-term rentals for digital nomads is an option. Reduced short-term rental supply could raise prices by up to 20% in hotspots, pushing tourists to hotels, especially in Barcelona. Other countries with more relaxed short-term rental rules, like Portugal and Italy, will attract investors, boosting tourism and property tax revenue.' ‌ Meanwhile, Pete Mugleston, Mortgage Advisor and Managing Director at Online Mortgage Advisor, predicted that as a result, Brits with holiday lets might switch to Italy, Greece, or Portugal instead. He elaborated: "If you're a Brit with a property in Spain that you let out through Airbnb, these changes will have you pulling your hair out. The Spanish authorities are doing this to combat locals being priced out of the housing market, due to the explosion in the short-term rental market in recent years. "This will add another layer of complexity to renting out your property and will more than likely be the final straw for many, as they choose to sell rather than rent. "The result is that Brits looking to purchase a holiday home abroad to rent out will now turn their attention to other countries, such as Italy, Greece or Portugal, where regulations aren't as strict." In response to the ministry's actions, Airbnb has criticised the approach, with the Majorca Daily Bulletin reporting the company's accusation of an "indiscriminate methodology" in compiling the list. Airbnb stated: "They are at odds with Spanish and European regulations."
