Magic aim to bounce back from Las Vegas Summer League opening loss

LAS VEGAS - The Magic came out firing when two-way guard Ethan Thompson and No. 25 pick Jase Richardson each sank their first attempts from beyond the arc Thursday night at Cox Pavilion on the campus of UNLV. Orlando summer league coach Ameer Bahhur had said earlier in the week he wanted his team to push the pace and play a similar style of basketball to the regular Magic. For the first minute of Thursday's Las Vegas Summer League opener against the Kings, Bahhur's squad was doing just that. The problem? It didn't last long. After jumping out to a 6-3 lead over Sacramento, the Magic scored just 6 more points the next nine minutes of the opening frame and trailed 21-12 after the first quarter. Orlando turned the ball over 6 times in the shorter 10-minute quarter while letting the Kings score 8 points in the paint and shoot 3 of 6 from 3-point range. 'A little bit of first-game jitters,' Bahhur said after the Magic fell 84-81. 'But I thought we cleaned it up as the game went on. We're asking them to play fast but under control. 'It was a little bit out of control to start the game but I thought it got better as we went,' he added. The Magic summer league coach isn't wrong. Take for example Magic second-round pick Noah Penda. The 6-foot-7 forward from France scored just 4 points and had 2 turnovers before the break. In the second half, he matched his points but recorded no turnovers with 4 assists and 2 rebounds. All 8 of his points for the night came in the paint. 'I've got to better, honestly,' the No. 32 pick said. 'I know what I'm capable of. The second game is going to better. 'The most important thing is to keep improving,' Penda added. 'And for me, just keep learning.' The same could be said for Richardson, the 6-1 guard from Michigan State. He posted just 5 points in the first half but racked up 9 points in 10 minutes after intermission. In the second half, he shot 60% from the field and added an assist, a steal and a rebound. 'I started feeling more comfortable as the game went on,' said Richardson, who defended at a high level. 'I feel like I could have done a lot more. I feel like I could give more to this team.' But he wasn't 100% either in the second half. During Thursday's game, he again tweaked the sore right ankle he dealt with back in Orlando before the team traveled to Las Vegas, Bahhur said. 'Messed up my ankle a little, the one that's been lingering,' Richardson said. 'Other than that, I feel great about the game.' That sentiment is shared among the summer league Magic despite the 3-point loss to the Kings. After trailing by as many as 17 points after two quarters, Orlando was able to tie the game at 74 with less than 90 seconds left in the contest. It helped that the Magic as a whole shot 42.9% (6 of 14) from 3 after the break, which included a pair of triples from second-year pro Tristan da Silva (who led Orlando with 19 points). Orlando also received 10 points in 12 second-half minutes from Skal Labissiere, an experienced 6-10 center who was a late addition to the Magic summer league roster. With one game under their belts, the Magic believe there's plenty of room to grow in order to get the results they want. Their next opportunity to show improvement is Sunday when they face the Raptors. 'It was a little ugly in the beginning, but at the end we looked really promising,' Richardson said. 'We know what this group can offer and the talent that we have. 'We started seeing that at the end and started getting more comfortable as a team.' WATCH: Highlights from Jase Richardson's NBA Summer League debut with Orlando Magic

Former Michigan State Spartans star Jase Richardson impressed in his NBA Summer League debut on Thursday night. Richardson dropped 14 points and dished out one assist in the Orlando Magic's opening game against the Sacramento Kings of NBA Summer League on Thursday. The Magic came out with the loss, but Richardson certainly was a bright spot for Orlando. Richardson shot 5-of-8 from the field, and 2-of-3 from three-point range in the game. This was his first game since the Magic selected him with the No. 25 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft last month. Next up for the Magic is another NBA Summer League game against the Toronto Raptors on Sunday. Jaden Akins to join former MSU teammate Jase Richardson with Magic in NBA Summer League

Michigan State's top two players on last year's team will be teaming up again in NBA summer leagues. Last week, Jase Richardson was selected by the Orlando Magic in the first round of the NBA draft. On Wednesday, we learned Jaden Akins is joining him with the Magic on their NBA summer roster. Advertisement Akins went unselected in the draft, and we were waiting patiently to see where he would end up, assuming he'd get a shot with someone for the summer. Akins started all 72 of the Spartans' games over the last two seasons, averaging double-digits in scoring in both years and providing stellar defense as well. He is slightly undersized for the NBA, though, which hurt his stock ahead of the draft. The Orlando Magic will begin their four-game summer league slate next week against the Sacramento Kings on July 10. The Magic will play four games across seven days in Las Vegas with playoffs to follow. Pulse Shooter Thriving In New-Found Home

Grateful for the lifeline, shooter Amorangi Malesala is all set to inject her special skill-set in a key outing for Te Wānanga o Raukawa Pulse in their final regular season match of the ANZ Premiership netball league. Needing a win to stitch up third spot and a place in the Finals Series, the Pulse come up against the Magic in Tauranga on Saturday, Malesala having highlighted the impetus she can provide following the introduction of new rules this season. In particular, the two-point shot rule, which comes into effect for the final five minutes of each quarter, and which is tailor-made for the play-making Malesala. Drafted in to the Pulse as an injury replacement ahead of the season, Malesala, 26, is a slick ball-handling creator, while throughout her career she has also been totally comfortable shooting from range. That adds an extra dynamic up her sleeve for the all-import super shot phases of the game. Ice cool under the hoop, Malesala feels no extra pressure with the introduction of the two-point shot, the situation at the time dictating how it is played out. ``I know what I'm capable of, that's been my style of play for a while now but it also comes down to shot selection,'' she said. ``If we're only up by two and even if I am in the position to shoot a two, it's best to back the ones until you get to a comfortable phase where you can actually start putting away the twos. ``The last thing I want is to keep going for twos and missing which gives the opposition opportunities, so it's being aware of when to put up the twos. But I feel like I've found that middle ground of being selective on what type of shots to put up.'' The Magic have two dab-hand two-point shooters of their own and on their day are a real threat. ``We've seen moments where they've closed the gap because of their two-point shot, so I think it's important for us to make sure we start strongly and try to get on top of them before the 10-minute mark,'' Malesala said. ``Otherwise, if we leave it to the last five minutes (super shot phase), Ameliaranne (Ekenasio) and Saviour (Tui) are very capable two-point shooters, so we have to create moments to get ahead ourselves. ``They're a good side. They have a few Silver Ferns in there and are a tight-knit team, so you can't overlook that, and we have to find ways to exploit them.'' Malesala radiates real joy when she's playing, a passion for the contest and plenty of positive energy. She's quickly been adopted as a fan favourite by the large home crowds the team draws to TSB Arena in Wellington and is lapping it up. ``I don't take any opportunity for granted, so I just try to play freely and I really just enjoy expressing myself,'' she said. ``If I was to reflect on a few years ago when I played for the Stars and playing in front of the TSB crowd, there was a feeling that you'd certainly want them on your side. So, to be able to be in the Pulse experiencing that home crowd is pretty special and they always give me plenty of support which is cool…..and advice of when to shoot.'' Coach Anna Andrews-Tasola has some positive selection headaches with the return of midcourters Fa'amu Ioane, from illness, and Whitney Souness, from concussion. Shooter Tiana Metuarau remains under a cloud with a muscle strain while defender Parris Mason, who is undergoing treatment for a neck injury, will not be available. Malesala will complete an eventful year when she's admitted to the bar in November and become a qualified lawyer. In a special family ceremony, Malesala will join sister Kimiora when the pair are admitted to the bar together. ``It is pretty special but it's also been pretty tough as well,'' she said. ``I have to acknowledge the College of Law for being very patient with me in giving me extensions here and there and working closely with me to ensure that I could balance netball and study.'' Well-travelled during her netball career, South Auckland remains Malesala's spiritual home where her upbringing and culture play an important role in her life, lending to her also being fluent in three languages. ``I'm Māori-Samoan, so I'm fluent in Te Reo Māori and I also grew up speaking Samoan at home,'' she said. ``It's really important for me to be grounded in my culture and I try to give my all to both, and it's important for me, to carry that wherever I go.''
