Supreme Court fines Hyderabad man Rs 10L, slams cops for filing criminal case in civil row
Supreme Court HYDERABAD: The Supreme Court has imposed a penalty of Rs 10 lakh on a Hyderabad-based man for misusing police investigation process to file a criminal case against the widow and daughter of a former Army officer. Ruling that the issue is a purely civil dispute, the SC called it a "gross abuse of process" and quashed the cheating case against the duo. The SC verdict came on July 18. Based on a complaint by P Srujan Sen, the criminal case was filed at Gachibowli police station in 2020. Sen had alleged that major general PSK Choudhary's wife Mala Choudhary (70) and daughter Revathi Choudhary, living in New Delhi, had duped him of Rs 4.05 crore in the guise of selling him their 500 square yard land in Gachibowli and a two-acre farmhouse in Chattarpur (Delhi). She was later released on bail.\ Man distorted facts & used influence to get FIR filed: SC Challenging the case, the women then approached the Telangana high court. They alleged that Sen was associated with Sandhya Constructions and Estates Pvt Ltd, a Hyderabad-based realty firm, and used his influence to file a false case against them and harass them. The case was, however, dismissed in April 2023. It stated that such a "cursory approach cannot be appreciated". It found fault with the cops too. "In a gross disregard to all tenets of law, the case was registered for allegations which had no elements of any crime whatsoever, what to talk of a cognisable offence," the SC said, adding that the cops should have advised Sen to approach the civil court. Pointing out inconsistencies in Sen's claims, the SC said it was evident he manipulated and distorted facts, using his influence to get the FIR against them. For the plot, for instance, Sen claimed they had an oral agreement for ₹5 crore while the value in the FIR mentioned ₹5.75 crore (₹1.15 lakh per sq yard). The FIR also alleged that Mala assured Sen that she'd recommend their neighbour to sell a plot to him as well. The civil suit, however, didn't mention these details. The SC observed that Sen also used his influence to humiliate the duo by keeping Mala in judicial custody. Even when the women offered to return the money and settle the dispute, Sen demanded interest on the amount. This settlement offer can be considered during the civil suit proceedings, directed the SC, adding that the Rs 10 lakh costs imposed on Sen must be paid to the women within 30 days from the order date. Furthermore, it directed cops to provide the women with security whenever they visit Hyderabad to manage their properties and directed the mother-daughter to inform police through email prior to their visit.

Westbrook's Seagull's Roost sold after 40 years of local ownership
A wave of emotion swept through Westbrook on Wednesday as residents gathered to say goodbye to the owners of Seagull's Roost, the cherished convenience store that has served the community for 40 years. Owned by the Sewpershad family since 1985, the store has been sold, marking the end of an era. The sale leaves a void in the tight-knit community, who have become like family to the Sewpershads. About 70 people came to say their goodbyes in what was an emotional tribute to the family. Siblings Ravine (61) and Mala Sewpershad (59) and Chandrika Ramnath (46) made the difficult decision to sell the family-run business, originally opened near the beach by their father Rammy – affectionately known as 'Seu'. The family moved the store to its current location in 2011. Rising competition from a major retailer and Mala's declining health ultimately led to the sale. The store will continue to operate under new ownership and employee Jabulisiwe Mapewu (who has worked at the store for 21 years) will continue in her role. Ravine described once working 35 consecutive days, from 6am to 11pm, eating dinner at midnight and going to bed at 2am. 'I had the strength to do it, but for how long?' he said. 'It was a hard decision, but not one taken overnight.' Mala thanked everyone for their love and support: 'All these people have been my life,' she said. Residents shared heartfelt memories, with Carol Rudloff praising Mala's compassion. 'Any time someone had a problem, you could come to her for help and support. Mala is a loving, open-hearted and honest person,' said Rudloff. The store was a community hub and depot. The siblings recalled parents using the store as a makeshift daycare and delivery drop-off point. Emiel and Noeleen Lategan, who moved to Westbrook in 1987, described the family as a pillar of the community. 'It is terrible to see them closing. My boys grew up in this shop,' said Emiel. 'Mala and Ravine looked after our kids, now they babysit our grandchildren,' added Noeleen. Heinz de Boer, a 35-year resident, noted that the last time the community gathered in such numbers was during the July 2021 unrest. 'It is a pity they have to give up their store. The turnout shows how loved the family is within Westbrook. 'Seagull's Roost is where Westbrook comes to gather.' Speaking at a press conference at the RPI state office here on Wednesday, he alleged that the ruling coalition is deliberately fuelling divisions among Dalit sub-castes, instigating violence. Legendary Bollywood actress Mala Sinha enjoyed a striking, four-decade long career in the industry. Her unmatched screen-presence and charismatic beauty made her a remarkable name in Indian cinema. But in a shocking turn of events, her rising career crashed badly due to a single lie told in courtroom. What was Mala Sinha's glorious career like? Mala Sinha made her debut in 1954 with the film Baadshah . Over the next years, she became a household name by featuring in more than 100 films, opposite superstars like Rajesh Khanna, Dev Anand, Amitabh Bachchan, Guru Dutt, Ashok Kumar and Manoj Kumar. Besides fame, her financial success also rose, becoming one of the highest-paid actresses in 90s. Mala's earnings even rivalled male superstars, which was a rarity for actresses in those times. How Mala Sinha's glittering life came to an end? However, in 1978, her personal life made national headlines, when Income Tax officials raided her home, recovering Rs 12 lakh hidden behind her bathroom walls. The matter escalated to courtroom, and under legal pressure she claimed that the money was earned through prostitution. According to reports, the shocking statement was advised to her by legal counsel and her father, to avoid further penalties. Though court permitted Mala to keep the money, but her career deteriorated following the shocking revelation. Following the whole courtroom incident, Mala's career couldn't rise and it led to a devastating end of her cinematic legacy. On the personal front, Mala Sinha's husband Chidambar Prasad Lohani, who was a known Nepali actor, passed away in 2024. He reportedly took his last breath at Annapurna Neuro Hospital, where he was battling pneumonia and Alzheimer's at the age of 86.
