Malaysia Reclaims Lion City Cup 2025 Lawn Bowls Title
THE NATIONAL lawn bowls squad created a sensation when it successfully reclaimed the overall champions title of the Lion City Cup 2025 held in Singapore yesterday. The tournament held at Kallang Lawn Bowls Green and Tanglin Club saw the national squad bagged three gold medals, one silver and six bronze medals to lead the medal tally and emerged as the overall tournament champion. Malaysia's gold medals were won by Emma Firyana Saroji and Nurul Alyani Jamil in the ladies pairs event, Muhammad Fikri Mohamed Hashim-Muhammad Attiq Imran Aminuddin in the mens' pairs under-25 (B25) event, and Noor Azzahara Abd Razak-Nurul Balqis Anisha Bakal (B-25 Ladies Pairs). Malaysian Lawn Bowls Federation (MLBF) president, Datuk Awalan Abdul Aziz said it was even more impressive that Malaysia only sent a reserve men's squad to compete in the men's category but was still able to win the overall tournament yesterday. 'The women's squad we sent is an elite squad, but our men's squad sent a reserve team consisting of university students, but they were still able to show encouraging achievements. 'For the pairs event, Emma Firyana and Nurul Alyani, who finished as runners-up at the Australian Open, managed to win the gold medal at the tournament yesterday, showing that the national squad consistently performs well,' he told Bernama today. 2025 World Cup indoor greens similar to 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games Court
KUALA LUMPUR: The indoor court of the 2025 Lawn Bowls World Cup, which will be held here from Nov 4-8, will feature a similar greens concept as to what is scheduled for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Malaysian Lawn Bowls Federation (MLBF) president Datuk Awalan Abdul Aziz said the World Cup will be held indoors, which requires several improvements to the existing bowling facilities to meet international standards. "We have to stage it indoors. We need to create a new portable greens (court), which will be adopted at the 2026 Commonwealth Games and (to be) approved by World Bowls. We will place a layer over the existing carpet and on top of that, we will install the portable mat, which can be removed. "We expect the procurement process to begin in three to four months. This preparation is important because our bowlers have never trained on portable greens, except for Nor Farah Ain Abdullah and Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple," he said after the Segambut Fiestabowls 2.0 in Bukit Kiara here today. He added that two main bowling greens will be used for the tournament, including one existing court which will be converted entirely into a marquee structure (tent-covered) for an indoor venue. A total of seven gold medals will be contested in men's and women's singles and pairs events as well as three special categories for para lawn bowlers. A total of 12 countries are slated to participate in the World Cup - namely Australia, England, New Zealand, Scotland, South Africa, Canada, India, Hong Kong, Ireland, the United States, Wales and Malaysia (host). – BERNAMA

Nor Farah Ain eyes 2026 Commonwealth Games after ASN win
PETALING JAYA: The ground-breaking success of being crowned Sportswoman of the Year at the 2024 National Sports Awards (ASN) has fuelled the spirit of national lawn bowler Nor Farah Ain Abdullah for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Nor Farah said it will be no walk in the park to Glasgow as she has to first jostle for a place at the quadrennial games with other senior lawn bowlers. 'My biggest target is to compete in the 2026 Commonwealth Games but I have to compete against my seniors first,' she said after the 2024 ASN here today. After rising to prominence in 2024 with the Fours gold medal at the 15th Asian Lawn Bowls Championship (Pattaya, Thailand), the world number one made history by becoming the first lawn bowler to win the National Sportswoman trophy. Nor Farah, who is resting after sustaining a right shoulder injury, hopes to return to action at the 2025 Hong Kong International Lawn Bowls Classic scheduled for this November. Commenting on the award she received today, Nor Farah described it as the biggest achievement in her career and thanked Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, the Malaysian Lawn Bowls Federation, notably president Datuk Awalan Abdul Aziz, and the National Sports Council for the strong support given to her and the sport of lawn bowling all these years. Nor Farah stole the limelight after winning the women's singles gold medal at the 2024 World Indoor Bowls Championships at Guernsey, Channel Islands, in April last year. Meanwhile, Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh, who received the Sportsman of the Year Award on behalf of national men's doubles pair of Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, said the recognition received by the 2022 world doubles champions was the highest honour for badminton in the country. Kenny hopes that the success will motivate not just Aaron-Wooi Yik but also other shuttlers to produce excellent results and bring glory to the country on the world stage. Aaron-Wooi Yik were absent as they are participating in the 2025 Thailand Open tournament, which runs from today until Sunday. Aaron-Wooi Yik, who are currently ranked world fifth, retained their Olympic bronze medal when they defeated Danish pair Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen at the 2024 Paris Olympics. In another development, Kenny was tight-lipped about the latest status of the country's top women's doubles pair of Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah, whose contract with BAM is under negotiation after it expired last December. BAM deputy president 1 Datuk V. Subramaniam said on Saturday that their future under the BAM flagship would be determined after the conclusion of the 2025 Thailand Open.
