The result set up a last-16 clash on June 30 in Charlotte, where Fluminense will face either River Plate, Inter Milan, or Monterrey. International pundits rave about Sundowns' football at World Cup
It is a source of national pride to see some of the international reactions to Mamelodi Sundowns' impressive performances at the 2025 Fifa Club World Cup (CWC) in the US. Downs had something of a baptism of fire at their first CWC appearance in the old seven-team format in Osaka in 2016, losing 2-0 to host Japanese club Kashima Antlers and 4-1 to South Korea's Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. In 2025 Sundowns got their first-ever CWC victory when they beat South Korea's Ulsan HD in their 1-0 opening Group F win in Orlando, Florida. The Pretoria team then went toe-to-toe with Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund in a thrilling 4-3 defeat in Cincinnati, Ohio on Saturday that has been hailed as one of the games of the tournament. Downs will reach the last 16 if they upset famous Brazilian outfit Fluminense in their final Group F clash at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Wednesday night (9pm).

Ronwen Williams breaks silence on mistake against Dortmund
Ronwen Williams, Mamelodi Sundowns' goalkeeper, has revealed the story behind his crucial blunder during their thrilling FIFA Club World Cup group stage clash with Borussia Dortmund. The match, held at Cincinnati's TQL Stadium on Saturday night, saw Dortmund edge a 4-3 victory after coming from behind. Williams' costly mistake came in the 16th minute when a back pass went directly to Borussia Dortmund's Felix Nmecha, who capitalised on the error to give the German giants the lead. Williams shared what led to the mishap, explaining how his teammate Teboho Mokoena's unexpected movement disrupted his intended pass. 'It's not nice to concede a goal like that. But you know, we are a team that takes risks. So, before I received the ball, I obviously saw 'Tebza' there, but he got a call from Marcelo Allende to move away. It was just one of those unfortunate situations. But we learn from it, and we keep going,' Williams said, as quoted by FARPost . Despite the early setback, Ronwen Williams praised his team's mental strength and determination to keep fighting against a physically dominant Dortmund side. 'However, we showed that we can compete. Yes, obviously, they are physically bigger, but it's all about the mind; if your mentality is right, you can go out there and compete with the best, and that's what we showed. 'We had a very good chance in the first-half, and I'm just proud of the boys for their efforts and the desire to keep fighting. Now, the gap is not that big. I think we have proved that.' The intense match ended 4-3 in favour of Dortmund. Goals from Felix Nmecha, Serhou Guirassy, Jobe Bellingham, and an own goal by Khuliso Mudau secured the win for the Bundesliga giants. Meanwhile, Lucas Ribeiro, Iqraam Rayners, and Lebo Mothiba found the net for Sundowns, keeping the contest fiercely competitive. Palmeiras v Al Ahly Club World Cup clash suspended for weather
The Brazilian side was leading 2-0 in the 63rd minute at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, in sunny conditions when players and fans were instructed to "take shelter" because of a nearby storm. A Wessam Abou Ali own goal sent Palmeiras ahead in the 49th minute. Flaco Lopez doubled the lead in the 59th minute. It is the third match at the tournament affected by storms at the tournament. On Tuesday, Mamelodi Sundowns' game against Ulsan HD was suspended just before kick-off for over an hour due to a weather alert. On Wednesday, RB Salzburg's match against Pachuca was suspended in the second half for 97 minutes because of a storm. Common public safety protocols in the US mandate that outdoor sports events are suspended for at least 30 minutes when lightning is seen or thunder heard. © 2025 AFP
