Bernardo Silva makes vow to Man City team-mates after 'biggest honour of career'

Daily Mirrora day ago

Bernardo Silva has been named Manchester City captain for the forthcoming season and is aiming to follow in the footsteps of club icons as he attempts to restore the side back at the top of the Premier League
Bernardo Silva is determined to leave a legacy for Manchester City's next generation. City captain Silva has been a huge part of the club's most successful era as Pep Guardiola's men have won every trophy, rewritten the history books and set new records.
After finishing last season empty-handed, they are determined to prove they are well and truly back by winning the Club World Cup. But the far bigger target is to create a pathway for the stars of tomorrow in the way the likes of Vincent Kompany, Yaya Toure and Sergio Aguero did for him.

It is beginning to feel like a new City team, Pep's 3.0 and a new generation ready for success with Silva insisting that being given the captain's armband is not just an honour but there is a responsibility among the established stars to help guide the younger players.

Silva, 30, said: 'Well, it's part of life. We've had a team that passed when I'm going to talk about players that were so important for this club and left. Like Vincent, like David Silva, Fernandinho, Kun Agüero, Yaya Touré.
'The club always finds new solutions, a new generation of players that has to keep putting this club in the right path up at the top. And yeah, it's nice that we have new blood in the team. These guys have a lot of energy, have a lot of quality.
'Being made captain is probably one of the biggest honours of my career. We went through a lot of fantastic moments and some disappointments as well. All that experience, I will try to pass it to the younger guys. But the leadership in a team, it's not about one guy.
'I'm counting on Ruben Dias, on Rodri, on Erling Haaland, on all the guys to help me. Because I will need that help to help the team achieve a lot of things and hopefully win titles.
'It's up to us, the older ones to give them the right path to achieve the good things. And then for them to take our place and perform at the club.
'And hopefully in a few years, it's their turn to show the young guys what to do. But it's definitely really nice to have them with us. They're great guys and they're working a lot, which is very important.'

City have blended in new boys Rayan Aït-Nouri and Tijjani Reijnders in their Club World Cup campaign and they have made a seamless transition.

Last season City lost the FA Cup final, lost their grasp on the Premier League title after winning it four times in a row and also crashing out early from the Champions League which they won just a couple of years ago.
It begged the obvious question as to whether City boss Guardiola had lost his dominance and if City were no longer the team to beat in English football after Liverpool 's title success.
And yet they have looked very impressive in the Club World Cup and are now eyeing a last 16 tie in Orlando on Monday with a route to the final stages of the tournament.

They put five past Juventus in their final Group match. It would also be one hell of a mission statement if City can win the trophy - and it would also go a long way to showing they are back.
Silva added: 'We've always been potential winners in all competitions that we play. Obviously it's just one game, but we're happy that the performance was the way it was. It shows that we're improving, we're coming back to the levels and to the standards that we got people used to at this club.

'That's good. That's a good sign for next season. Not only for this competition, but we want to build to the whole season, to the whole year.
'Because what happened last year was quite disappointing for all of us. We want to change, we want to be better. This was a great performance and it shows that we can do it again.'

Hayato Inamura to Celtic transfer on the brink as timeline for 'expected' Albirex Niigata arrival revealed

The Japanese youngster is reportedly on Brendan Rodgers' radar Albirex Niigata defender Hayato Inamura will complete a move to Celtic next week, according to a report. The left-sided centre back only joined Albi last summer and has made 15 league appearances in Japan's top tier, with his side currently in the midst of a relegation battle. ‌ While more midfield players are high on Brendan Rodgers ' wish list following the capture of Benjamin Nygren, Inamura, 23, is said to be a summer transfer target for the Hoops and reports in Japan claim that a deal is almost done. ‌ Sponichi state that Inamura will play his final game for his current club against Machida Zelvia on Sunday before jetting off to Europe to undergo a medical and put pen to paper at Parkhead. The left-sided defender stands at 6ft tall and is a renowned set piece specialist. Should he make the switch to Glasgow's East End then he will become the ninth Japanese export to pull on the famous green and white. Curren Celtic stars Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate have become fan's favourites since their respective arrivals in 2022 and both have been linked with big money moves elsewhere this summer. Compatriot Kyogo Furuhashi enjoyed three and a half productive seasons with the club before joining Rennes in a £10million deal last January. Tomoki Iwata left the club last summer to join Birmingham while Yosuke Ideguchi and Yuki Kobayashi were also moved on after failing to make an impact. Winger Koki Mizuno made 12 appearances for the Hoops between 2008 and 2010 and he was preceded by arguably the most celebrated Japanese player at Parkhead - Shunsuke Nakamura. ‌ After arriving from Italian side Reggina in 2005, the former midfield maestro went onto net 34 times in 166 appearances, including two memorable free-kicks in the Champions League against Manchester United. Casemiro makes final decision on Man Utd exit as Carlo Ancelotti role emerges

Casemiro has been attracting interest from Saudi Arabia for the past 18 months as United have been looking to trim their huge wage bill - but he's set to stay at Old Trafford Big-earning Brazilian midfielder Casemiro is set to stay at Manchester United next season after being offered a World Cup lifeline by Carlo Ancelotti. Casemiro, who collects a cool £350,000-a-week, was handed a shock recall by his country when his former Real Madrid boss named his first Brazil squad earlier this month. ‌ And with the 33-year-old now targeting the finals in Canada, Mexico and the United States next summer, he believes his chances of playing in a third World Cup will be enhanced by staying in the Premier League. Casemiro has been attracting interest from Saudi Arabia for the past 18 months as United have been looking to trim their huge wage bill. ‌ But he worked his way back into manager Ruben Amorim's plans towards the end of the season and was rewarded when new Brazil coach Ancelotti ended his two-year international absence by bringing him into his squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Paraguay. Casemiro played the full 90 minutes in both games as Brazil collected four points to move up to third place in the South American qualifying table. Ancelotti managed Casemiro at the Bernabeu and didn't agree with the decision to sell him to United in a £70million deal three years ago. The Italian believes the five-time Champions League winner can be a big dressing room influence for him during his first crack at international management. Casemiro has one year left on his United contract, although the Reds have an option to trigger a 12-month extension. He impressed Amorim with his attitude during the final few months of a traumatic season, but United will not stand in his way if the Brazilian decided to cash in by moving to Saudi. Casemiro has continually insisted that he is happy in Manchester despite interest from Al-Nassr, the big-spending club that has just handed Cristiano Ronaldo a two-year contract worth almost £500 million. ‌ The Brazilian is a close friend of the 40-year-old Portuguese after they played together at Madrid. And he posted a picture of him wearing a pair of £7,000 LED recovery boots manufactured by a company partly owned by Ronaldo on his Instagram account during the week. United are looking for buyers for a raft of players who are surplus to requirements under Amorim as they try to raise money to finance a rebuild. ‌ Wing trio Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony are all in the shop window, but the Reds' hopes that Inter Milan would follow up an enquiry for misfiring £72 million striker Rasmus Hojlund with a bid for the Danish international. Inter targeted two new strikers after finishing second in serie A and then being hammered by Paris St Germain in the Champions League final. But they have spent £20 million on Parma's Ange-Yoan Bonny and are ready to give teenager Francesco Pio Esposito more game-time after he capped a fine performance against River Plate in the Club World Cup with his first goal for the club. That would close the door on a permanent move for Hojlund, although Inter could still offer a 12-month loan option with an obligation to buy.
