Disney Dream cruise ship passengers recall the horror sounds they heard when little girl fell overboard

Passengers who were aboard the Disney Dream cruise ship when a little girl fell overboard from the fourth deck of the ship into the open ocean have told of the awful sounds they heard as the dramatic incident unfolded. 'There was some kind of commotion,' recalled one passenger who saw the entire rescue take place and who filmed it and posted it to TikTok, under the username Chandler Sphynx. 'Then there this awful scream from what I assume is the mother, and then this massive splash,' she told People. 'It sounded like hitting pavement, nothing like if you jump into a pool. It was so loud.' The emergency code - 'MOB port side,' for Man Overboard then boomed across the ship's loudspeakers, sending passengers racing to the railings to see what had happened. Witnesses say the little girl plunged from the fourth deck of the ship into the Atlantic, followed moments later by her father, who jumped in to try to save her. 'I didn't think they'd film them. The splash when he went in was SO loud,' Chandler wrote online. The drama unfolded on Sunday morning as the 130,000-ton vessel made its way back to Fort Lauderdale from Disney's Lookout Cay at around 11:15am. Within minutes, Disney's crew launched a bright yellow rescue vessel, with four crew members rushing toward the father and daughter struggling to stay afloat in the choppy Atlantic waters. Video showed the pair floating in the ocean as several flotation devices including life jackets and rings were thrown overboard. Cheers erupted from passengers watching on balconies as the rescue team pulled the two from the sea after about 20 minutes. Disney Cruise Line confirmed in a statement that both guests were returned to the ship safely and praised the quick action of the crew. 'The crew aboard the Disney Dream swiftly rescued two guests from the water,' it read. 'We commend our crew members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes.' The captain addressed passengers afterward, confirming the rescue and reminding guests to follow safety protocols for the remainder of the trip. Passengers were left shaken by the ordeal, which happened as the Disney Dream was between Nassau and Grand Bahama Island. Chandler, who watched with her own nine-year-old daughter, told People she feared the worst as she saw the rescue efforts unfold. 'I had to tell my daughter they were probably gone because they usually can't find people who fall,' she said. 'I didn't think they'd find them.' Incredibly, the father managed to keep his daughter's head above water while the ship maneuvered to help and the rescue boat was launched. The ship, with a top speed of 25mph, was still moving at sea, adding to the drama. It left the father and daughter some distance away from the cruise ship by the time rescuers were able to reach them. The pair were finally lifted from the water at about 11:47am, according to witnesses. Social media videos showed the dramatic moment they were brought aboard the rescue boat, with a wave of applause breaking out among relieved guests. 'It was so intense to watch,' recalled one passenger, Janice Martin-Asuque, in a Facebook post. 'Didn't even know a cruise ship could do a 180 degree turn that quick,' added fellow passenger Nick Young. The terrifying moment unfolded aboard the Disney Dream as the ship was sailing back to Fort Lauderdale from the Bahamas (file photo) Questions remain about how the child managed to fall from an area with protective plexiglass barriers. Deck 4, where the fall occurred, includes a jogging track and viewing areas that are usually considered secure. The Disney Dream entered service in 2010 and underwent a major refurbishment last year with strong safety protocols. Disney officials say they will also review security footage to try and understand what went wrong and prevent something similar from happening in the future.

Disney Dream cruise tragedy averted near Fort Lauderdale; father and rescue crew save girl who fell overboard

A tragedy at a Disney Dream cruise was narrowly averted on Sunday, June 29, when a young girl fell overboard and her father jumped in to save her. Thankfully, both father and daughter made it out alive after being successfully rescued by the Disney Dream crew. The Disney cruise had been on a trip to the Bahamas, and was returning from the Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point in order to head back to Forth Lauderdale, Florida. It was during this return journey that tragedy almost struck. Thankfully, due to the efforts of the girl's father and the cruise crew, what could've been a harrowing day instead became a story of heroism, with a father who put his life at risk to save his child, and a rescue team that delivered when it mattered the most. A father jumped after his child after she went overboard A Disney cruise vacation turned chaotic when a young girl reportedly fell from the Disney Dream ship, prompting her father to jump into the sea to save her. This incident occurred on June 29, as the ship was returning to Florida's Port Everglades after a four-night Bahamian… — Ashish rai (@journorai) June 30, 2025 The child fell overboard from the cruise ship's Deck 4, which had a walking/jogging track. Given how quickly her father jumped after her, it's widely assumed that he was with his daughter when she fell overboard. This event became a talking point on social media, as many of the passengers on the cruise ship reported that the Man Overboard (M.O.B) alarm had rung out, alerting them to the fact that something was wrong. Their live posting about what was going on was part of the reason the event went viral in the first place. Online discussions about the girl falling overboard fueled speculation There was rampant online speculation about the overboard incident on social media, with people questioning how the girl fell overboard in the first place, and whether or not the cruise ship was docked when the incident occurred. The Facebook account of Dewayne Smith posted about the incident, claiming that it was the first time he'd witnessed a fellow passenger falling overboard. He was also among the first people to confirm that both the girl and her father had been successfully rescued. When it came to speculation about the ship's location at the time of the rescue effort, a cruise passenger with the Reddit username metzd87 explained that the ship wasn't docked at the time: 'Not docked! Halfway between Bahamas and Ft. Lauderdale! Fully moving! Heard in our rooms 'Mr. M.O.B port side.'" Regardless of the questions raised about how a child could fall overboard in the first place, her successful rescue speaks to the dedication and competence of the girl's father as well as the Disney Dream rescue crew.

Kurt Egelhof unveils bold new book series

Renowned South African actor, director, playwright, and producer Kurt Egelhof, a staple of local film, theatre, and television since the early 1980s, is making waves in the literary world with the launch of his debut book collection. Egelhof hosted a special book launch at Theatre on the Square in Sandton on May 29, unveiling four compelling works that reflect his decades-long dedication to storytelling rooted in socio-political truth and personal experience. A drama graduate from the University of Natal and a professional actor since 1981, Egelhof is widely recognised for his roles in films such as Ghost and the Darkness, The Last Victims, Zulu Love Letters, and Windprints. Also read: Vibrant festivities illuminate Grayston Preparatory with colour, food, and film Behind the scenes, he has directed more than 250 episodes of popular local dramas and soaps, including Isidingo, Scandal, and Backstage. Now, Egelhof turns the lens inward with his literary project: From Stage to Page. The collection consists of four books, The Adventure Boys, The Palace of Broken Dreams, The Accidental Death of a Good Coloured Man, and Man Overboard, each examining poignant themes through distinct yet interconnected narratives. 'These stories have lived in me for decades. They are fictional, but they are born out of real experiences, my own, and those I have witnessed. This is my attempt to honour memory, provoke thought, and keep the dialogue going about identity, opportunity, and the many faces of injustice in our country and beyond.' Also read: Castle Lager rallies behind Proteas for historic Lord's final The Adventure Boys is inspired by a tragic event Egelhof witnessed in his youth, a reflection on innocence lost and the hard lessons of early life. The Palace of Broken Dreams interrogates the intersection of race, privilege, and artistic talent in post-apartheid South Africa. The Accidental Death of a Good Coloured Man builds on Egelhof's acclaimed stage production, examining racial identity, generational trauma, and the pursuit of legacy. Man Overboard offers a raw, behind-the-scenes glimpse into life aboard luxury cruise ships, contrasting the glamour experienced by passengers with the harsh realities of the crew. Though each book stands alone, together they trace the life journey of a central character from the age of 16 to 60, mirroring, in many ways, Egelhof's evolution as an artist and activist.
