Disney Dream cruise ship passengers recall the horror sounds they heard when little girl fell overboard

Daily Mail2 days ago
Passengers who were aboard the Disney Dream cruise ship when a little girl fell overboard from the fourth deck of the ship into the open ocean have told of the awful sounds they heard as the dramatic incident unfolded.
'There was some kind of commotion,' recalled one passenger who saw the entire rescue take place and who filmed it and posted it to TikTok, under the username Chandler Sphynx.
'Then there this awful scream from what I assume is the mother, and then this massive splash,' she told People.
'It sounded like hitting pavement, nothing like if you jump into a pool. It was so loud.'
The emergency code - 'MOB port side,' for Man Overboard then boomed across the ship's loudspeakers, sending passengers racing to the railings to see what had happened.
Witnesses say the little girl plunged from the fourth deck of the ship into the Atlantic, followed moments later by her father, who jumped in to try to save her.
'I didn't think they'd film them. The splash when he went in was SO loud,' Chandler wrote online.
The drama unfolded on Sunday morning as the 130,000-ton vessel made its way back to Fort Lauderdale from Disney's Lookout Cay at around 11:15am.
Within minutes, Disney's crew launched a bright yellow rescue vessel, with four crew members rushing toward the father and daughter struggling to stay afloat in the choppy Atlantic waters.
Video showed the pair floating in the ocean as several flotation devices including life jackets and rings were thrown overboard.
Cheers erupted from passengers watching on balconies as the rescue team pulled the two from the sea after about 20 minutes.
Disney Cruise Line confirmed in a statement that both guests were returned to the ship safely and praised the quick action of the crew.
'The crew aboard the Disney Dream swiftly rescued two guests from the water,' it read. 'We commend our crew members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes.'
The captain addressed passengers afterward, confirming the rescue and reminding guests to follow safety protocols for the remainder of the trip.
Passengers were left shaken by the ordeal, which happened as the Disney Dream was between Nassau and Grand Bahama Island.
Chandler, who watched with her own nine-year-old daughter, told People she feared the worst as she saw the rescue efforts unfold.
'I had to tell my daughter they were probably gone because they usually can't find people who fall,' she said. 'I didn't think they'd find them.'
Incredibly, the father managed to keep his daughter's head above water while the ship maneuvered to help and the rescue boat was launched.
The ship, with a top speed of 25mph, was still moving at sea, adding to the drama.
It left the father and daughter some distance away from the cruise ship by the time rescuers were able to reach them.
The pair were finally lifted from the water at about 11:47am, according to witnesses.
Social media videos showed the dramatic moment they were brought aboard the rescue boat, with a wave of applause breaking out among relieved guests.
'It was so intense to watch,' recalled one passenger, Janice Martin-Asuque, in a Facebook post.
'Didn't even know a cruise ship could do a 180 degree turn that quick,' added fellow passenger Nick Young.

Questions remain about how the child managed to fall from an area with protective plexiglass barriers.
Deck 4, where the fall occurred, includes a jogging track and viewing areas that are usually considered secure.
The Disney Dream entered service in 2010 and underwent a major refurbishment last year with strong safety protocols.
Disney officials say they will also review security footage to try and understand what went wrong and prevent something similar from happening in the future.

Emotional moment father of the bride invites her stepfather to join them mid-aisle walk

Heart-warming footage captures the moment a bride's father invites her stepfather to walk down the aisle with them. The emotional video shows Shayna Sweeney, 29, of Jacksonville Beach, Florida, preparing to tie the knot at Castello Di Ristonchi in Pelago, Italy. As she readies herself to walk down the aisle, Shayna's father, Rob McHugh, 60, approaches the wedding guests' before pulling a man from the crowd. In a touching gesture, Rob asks his daughter's stepfather, Vinny Mauro, 48, to join him in escorting Shayna to her groom. Vinny appears to be surprised but accepts the offer, and the trio walks down the aisle together, holding back tears. The touching moment captured hearts online and went viral on TikTok, amassing more than 1.3 million likes and over 6.9 million views. 'Walking down the aisle with both of my dads made perfect sense. 'They've both supported me and been by my side throughout my life, so it was only right that they stood with me on such an important day,' Shayna told Newsweek. The idea to include Vinny - who has known Shayna since she was 8 years old - was a collaborative effort between her and Rob. The wedding was attended by just over 100 guests, who traveled to Italy to celebrate the couple's special day. TikTok viewers expressed their emotional reactions to the video in the comments section. One said: 'Even the guys crying in the back. I also walked with my dad and step dad.' Another added: 'The only type of coparenting that should ever exist.' 'WHY AM I UGLY CRYING I DON'T EVEN KNOW YOU,' shared a third user. 'How are some families this healthy?', asked another viewer. It comes after last year a woman revealed how both her father and her stepfather walked her down the aisle on her wedding day. According to bride Amy Walkinshaw, 31, as soon as she got engaged to Ryan Walkinshaw, 31, she knew she wanted both men to be involved in giving her away. Amy was raised by both dad, Andy Collins, 58, a train driver, and her stepdad, Jeff Bennett, 64, a project manager - who has been in her life for the past two decades. She wanted to honour both father figures at their wedding last weekend at Prested Hall in Colchester, Essex. So, she asked her father Andy to go and surprise Jeff by grabbing him from the audience to walk down with him and Amy. Amy, a student studying psychodynamic practice at University of Essex, said: 'Jeff has been in my life for 20 years, he is basically a second dad to me. 'I always imagined if I got married I'd ask him to walk me down the aisle as well as my dad. 'Jeff didn't know it was coming either - you can tell in the video the shock on Jeff's face, I knew how much it meant to him. 'The main thing to come out of it is to show there doesn't have to be animosity.
