Mundian hauls up Gmada over poor Airport Rd work

Mohali: Housing and urban development minister Hardeep Singh Mundian Friday conducted a surprise inspection of the Airport Road widening project between the Sector 65/66 junction and Sector 66B in Mohali. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Expressing strong displeasure, the minister flagged the slow pace and substandard quality of work being carried out under Gmada. Taking immediate note of the discrepancies, Mundian reprimanded the officials on the spot and directed the principal secretary of the department to investigate the matter thoroughly and ensure accountability of all those involved, including department staff and contractors. "The ground reality is far from the progress shown on paper. This is unacceptable," Mundian said during the inspection. He emphasised that quality cannot be compromised and warned of strict action against those responsible for the delay and poor execution. The minister said the Mann-led govt is committed to transparent, timely, and high-quality development, especially in urban areas like Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali), which has emerged as one of Punjab's most developed cities due to its proximity to the international airport and growing corporate presence. "The planned development of cities is integral to our vision for Punjab. Negligence or lack of seriousness in public projects will not be tolerated," Mundian asserted. He said Gmada is playing a key role in the region's transformation and that he will continue to personally inspect ongoing infrastructure projects to ensure standards are met. The widening of Airport Road is part of a broader urban development plan to improve traffic flow and connectivity in Mohali, but concerns over execution threaten to delay benefits to residents and commuters.

RTO services in Punjab to go online

Mohali: In a major step towards digitising public services, Punjab transport minister Laljit Singh Bhullar Friday announced that all RTO (regional transport office) services in the state will soon be available online, allowing citizens to complete their transport-related work from the comfort of their homes. Speaking to the media during a surprise inspection of the RTA office and the new driving test track in Sector 82 here, the minister revealed that the digital rollout will start as a pilot project from Mohali, before being extended to the entire state. Bhullar said, "We are committed to administrative reform and citizen convenience. With all RTO services going online, people won't have to stand in queues or make repeated visits to the office." He added that necessary modalities are being finalised for launching the online office soon. During the inspection, the minister personally interacted with the staff and citizens at the public counters, taking stock of day-to-day operations and grievances. Citizens reportedly appreciated the cooperation extended by the officials and praised the functioning of the office. Bhullar issued on-the-spot directions to address any public complaints and instructed staff to ensure that no citizen is harassed or inconvenienced. "If any document is incomplete, the applicant should be fully informed about what is missing so that no one has to return again and again," he said. H e also reviewed the tax collection process and emphasised strict enforcement against tax defaulters and vehicle owners with incomplete documentation. Staff attendance was verified and found to be 100 percent, reflecting positively on the department's discipline. The minister later inspected the automated driving test track at Sector 82, which has been built using modern technology to ensure foolproof testing and eliminate impersonation. The track is equipped with high-resolution CCTV cameras and automated evaluation systems for both two-wheelers and four-wheelers. Sharing performance data, Bhullar said the pass rate for four-wheelers currently stands at 40%, and 82% for two-wheelers, pointing to the transparent and merit-based testing system. "This modern system not only ensures fair testing but will also help in reducing road accidents. Such technology will be replicated across all driving test tracks in Punjab," he added. The surprise visit and announcements underscore the Mann-led govt's focus on transparency, accountability, and digital governance, with the Mohali RTO set to become a model for statewide transformation in transport services.

Political storm erupts in Punjab after SAD leader Majithia's arrest: Opposition cries vendetta, AAP defends anti-drug drive

He further criticised the early morning raid at the MLA flat allotted to Majithia's wife and fellow legislator, Ganieve Kaur Majithia. 'No search warrant was brought, nor was she informed. The officials entered her bedroom and searched her almirahs. This is shameful and not the first time. Similar tactics were used against our party MLA Sukhpal Khaira. The Mann-led government's methods are immoral. Take action if needed, but follow due process,' he said. Bajwa also issued a caution to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, stating, 'Mann thinks he will rule Punjab for 25 years. But others who thought the same are now out of power. Follow the rule of law this is not jungle raj.' Congress MLA Sukhpal Khaira also came out in support of Majithia, condemning the raid as politically motivated. 'Punjab has now turned into a police state,' he said in a Facebook video. Punjab BJP spokesperson Pritpal Singh Baliawal took to X to draw parallels with the Emergency, tweeting, '#EmergencyIndia1975 to till today in Punjab. Same things happening to shut the voices of opposition. Congress + AAP = INDI Alliance = One & the same! Political Vendetta!'

Haryana chief minister criticizes Punjab government for doing petty politics over important issues.

Ludhiana: Haryana chief minister Nayab Singh Saini on Saturday lashed out at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) govt in Punjab, accusing it of politicising essential issues such as drinking water, drug control, and farm subsidies, instead of addressing them. His remarks came during a campaign visit to this city in support of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Jiwan Gupta ahead of the June 19 Ludhiana West byelection. Speaking at a press conference, Saini criticised the AAP-led Punjab govt for allegedly denying Haryana its share of drinking water from the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB). "When Haryana only seeks water to drink, this govt, despite Punjab being the land of great Gurus, has turned it into a political drama," he said. Saini also accused AAP of using the war on drugs as a distraction. "Instead of catching real culprits, they are doing theatrics to cover up their failures," he said, adding that both AAP and Congress had betrayed Punjab's voters — Congress for five years, and AAP for the last three and a half. On the issue of minimum support price (MSP), Saini claimed that while Punjab failed to offer it to farmers, the Haryana got had provided subsidies on various crops under central government schemes. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo "We've implemented every major central scheme — from Ayushman Bharat to Ujjwala — and delivered results," he said, citing 13 lakh free electricity connections, 15 lakh free gas cylinders, and more than ₹2.5 crore in medical reimbursements. This time, Ludhiana West will elect a BJP MLA and send a message across Punjab that change is coming," he said, after meeting with industrialists and local residents. Black flags greet CM convoy Saini's visit was marred by protests as black flags were waved at his convoy. Protesters raised slogans such as "Punjab de paania de chor murdabad" (Death to the thieves of Punjab's waters). Police cleared the area to allow the cavalcade to pass. The Aam Aadmi Party, in a statement issued later that day, said the protests reflected public anger over Haryana's alleged historical exploitation of Punjab's water resources. "Hundreds turned out to oppose the CM's visit, expressing frustration over Haryana and BJP's continued attempts to loot Punjab's water," the statement read. AAP accused the Haryana govt of misusing Punjab's BBMB allocation and praised the Mann-led administration for standing firm on Punjab's water rights. "While earlier govts stayed silent, the Mann govt is working to expand canal water for irrigation and ensure optimal water management," the statement added. As the bypoll looms, water-sharing has emerged as a key campaign issue in Punjab, with voters watching closely which parties promise to safeguard the state's agricultural interests. Punjab minister criticizes Sukhbir Badal over land pooling scheme and past governance.

Ludhiana: Punjab minister Tarunpreet Singh Sondh launched a blistering attack on Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Thursday, accusing the former deputy chief minister of corruption, arrogance, and misleading the public over the Bhagwant Mann govt's land-pooling scheme. Speaking to reporters in the Ludhiana West constituency, Sondh dismissed Badal's recent remarks as "baseless" and claimed they revealed the Akali leader's "political and financial desperation." "Sukhbir Badal is not fighting for farmers," Sondh said. "He's defending his own interests and the land mafia nexus he built during his time in power. Every Punjabi knows that illegal construction in the state flourished under the Badal family's watch. " The minister said the Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) govt's land-pooling scheme posed no threat to farmers. Participation in the scheme, he said, is entirely voluntary and designed to increase land value by developing roads, lighting, sanitation, and other infrastructure. "Farmers who choose to participate will receive 1,000 square yards of residential and 200 square yards of commercial land per acre — a return that will multiply in value fivefold within a few years," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Zumbido e perda de audição? "The man who now claims to support farmers had earlier backed the Centre's three black farm laws. He only reversed his stance under public pressure," he said, adding that Sukhbir's wife, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, failed to deliver any meaningful development during her tenure as Union food processing minister. The minister also targeted the SAD chief over the contentious Satluj-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal issue, accusing him of compromising Punjab's interests for "personal economic gain." He criticised Badal for "disregarding" the authority of Akal Takht Sahib and treating Sikh institutions as "political tools." "Sukhbir Badal has no moral authority to speak on Punjab's issues," Sondh said. "His legacy is one of crime, corruption, and collusion with land mafias — not of service to the people. " The Mann govt, he added, was committed to cleaning up Punjab's politics and eliminating drugs, corruption, and land-related exploitation. MSID:: 121469159 413 |
