Opposition mulls legal course, mass stir against SIR of electoral roll in Bihar
The RJD and Congress on Thursday indicated that Opposition parties were exploring options, including moving the court and mobilising a mass agitation against the(ECI's proposed Special Incentive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll in poll-bound Bihar. The Congress said it has "lost all faith in the ECI brass" after Opposition leaders' deliberations with them on the SIR issue a day earlier. They claimed that CEC Gynesh Kumar told them that at least "20% of the Bihar voters will be out of" the rolls after the SIR. "The Opposition leaders' meeting with the ECI brass on SIR was not a cordial one. Now, the Opposition leaders are in the process of discussing the future course. All options, including legal recourse, are being discussed," RJD MP Manoj Jha told ET. Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said at a presser that "all options are are in discussions with our INDIA bloc allies and experts". He stepped up the attack on the poll body by accusing the ECI brass of behaving like "bicholia" (middleman) of the government. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like ¿Quieres un segundo ingreso? INDIA Bloc To EC: Bihar Voter Revision Risks Fairness, May Exclude Poor
NEW DELHI: A delegation of Opposition parties strongly objected to the Election Commission of India's decision to conduct a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar just months ahead of the assembly elections. The parties alleged that the move, announced belatedly, could compromise the fairness of the electoral process and disproportionately affect marginalised communities. An 18-member delegation representing 11 INDIA bloc constituents — including the Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Samajwadi Party, Communist Party of India (CPI), and CPI (M-L) — met with ECI officials at Nirvachan Sadan on Wednesday to register their formal protest. Briefing the media after the meeting, senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi said the timing of the revision raised serious concerns. 'This exercise involves verifying over 7.75 crore voters in Bihar. With barely 2–3 months left for the assembly polls, such a massive exercise is neither practical nor fair,' he said, calling it a violation of the level playing field essential for free and fair elections. Singhvi, accompanied by RJD MP Manoj Jha, CPI (M-L)'s Dipankar Bhattacharya, Bihar Congress chief Rajesh Kumar, and others, said the delegation also expressed strong disapproval of the EC's new rule restricting the number of party representatives in such meetings. He said senior leaders like Jairam Ramesh and Pawan Khera were denied entry and made to wait outside. 'This kind of limitation on who can meet the Commission — capping it at two people including the party president — is unprecedented and arbitrary,' Singhvi said. The opposition leaders further questioned the timing of the announcement, pointing out that no mention of a Special Intensive Revision had been made in the EC's public communications over the past six months. 'When this exercise was done in 2003, general elections were a year away, and assembly elections two years away. Now there are just a few months left,' Singhvi said. The delegation alleged that for the first time, the EC was asking voters to furnish multiple documents, a move that could lead to the exclusion of poor, marginalised, and rural populations from the voter rolls. 'This sudden push for documentation, at this late stage, will disenfranchise those who lack the means to comply,' he warned. RJD's Manoj Jha echoed the concern, saying the exercise was suspicious in intent and its implementation would result in widespread confusion and voter suppression. CPI (M-L) leader Dipankar Bhattacharya said the revision risks becoming a tool of manipulation if carried out without transparency or adequate time. The leaders urged the Commission to defer the revision exercise and ensure that electoral reforms, if necessary, are conducted in a manner that does not affect voter rights or compromise democratic integrity.

Preamble Row Flares Up- After Tharoor's 'RSS Moved On' Bombshell, RJD Slams VP Dhankhar's Comments
/ Jun 29, 2025, 07:05PM IST The ongoing Preamble debate has intensified, with sharp political exchanges following remarks by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, who said the Constitution's Preamble was altered during the Emergency to add "socialist" and "secular," calling preamble the 'seed' of the Constitution. RJD MP Manoj Jha hit back, asking if the issue is with the words or their inclusion. Earlier, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor had responded to Rahul Gandhi's 'Manusmriti' tweet, noting historical RSS criticism of the Constitution but claimed the RSS has 'moved on.' The row was first triggered by RSS leader Dattatreya Hosabale, who questioned the additions during an Emergency anniversary event.#preambledebate #indianconstitution #jagdeepdhankhar #socialistsecular #emergency1975 #samvidhanhatyadiwas #manojjha #shashitharoor #rahulgandhi #dattatreyahosabale #constitutionofindia #basicstructuredoctrine #indiraGandhi #indianpolitics #democracy #secularism #socialism #india #constitutionalamendment #parliament #supremecourt #rss #congress #rjd #toi #toibharat

"When abroad, you become voice of India": RJD leader Manoj Jha's message for all-party delegations
Patna (Bihar) [India], May 18 (ANI): As all-party delegation prepares to visit key partner nations to bolster India's campaign against cross-border terrorism, Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Manoj Jha said the delegation will represent a united national voice abroad, urging friendly countries to stand by India just as India has stood by them in difficult times. Speaking to ANI, Jha said, 'The Centre and the opposition have relevance only in domestic politics. When you go abroad, you become the voice of India. This delegation will execute this mandate. We have to ensure through this delegation that if a country is our friend, whom we have supported in difficult times, then it should support us too.' Earlier today, Janata Dal (United) leader Neeraj Kumar said that it is important for the international community to understand how Pakistan-sponsored terrorism is disturbing the life of citizens in India. Kumar said the government's move to send multi-party delegations to key nations was a necessary step to convey India's position on terrorism and regional peace. On Saturday, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Bihar President Dilip Jaiswal stressed that national security must unite all political parties to send a strong message both domestically and internationally. A total of seven groups of MPs have been delegated to go to more than 30 countries, led by a variety of leaders, including Congress' Shashi Tharoor, NCP-SCP's Supriya Sule, BJP's Ravi Shankar Prasad, DMK's Kanimozhi Karunanidhi and others. Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal, Biju Janata Dal from the opposition's side have sent their MPs to be part of the delegation. NDA allies, including Janata Dal (United), and TDP are also part of the delegations. Operation Sindoor was launched on May 7, targeting terror bases in Pakistan in retaliation for the deadly Pahalgam terror attack on April 22. The operation targeted terror infrastructure deep inside Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, eliminating over 100 terrorists linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen.
