Sifan Hassan to run Sydney Marathon, unlikely for World Championships
Sifan Hassan plans to run the Sydney Marathon on Aug. 31. Her management team says that means she does not plan to compete at the World Track and Field Championships in Tokyo from Sept. 13-21.
Hassan, the Olympic marathon gold medalist, will headline the women's field for Sydney's debut as a World Marathon Major race.

'Australia is such a strong athletics nation, and a great marathon needs passionate and loud fans, so I'm excited," Hassan said in a press release. "I'm also honored to be part of the Sydney Marathon's first year as a Major.'
At the Paris Olympics, Hassan earned bronze medals in the 5000m (Aug. 5) and the 10,000m (Aug. 9) before winning the marathon on Aug. 11.
This summer, she does not plan to attempt the reverse in a tight window. Track races at worlds in Tokyo are two weeks after the Sydney Marathon.
"Participation in Australia means that Sifan will not participate in the World Championships in Tokyo in principle," Hassan's management team said. "This is not 100 percent certain, because Sifan can always decide differently."

It would be the first time Hassan misses the biennial worlds since 2013, when the Dutchwoman was at the start of what has become a groundbreaking career.
At the Tokyo Olympics, Hassan won 5000m and 10,000m gold and 1500m bronze.
In Paris, Hassan became the first person to run the 5000m, 10,000m and marathon at one Olympics in 40 years. She became the second person ever to win a medal in the three longest races at one Olympics after Czech Emil Zátopek, who won all three in 1952.
Hassan has raced once since the Paris Games — taking third in the London Marathon on April 27.

Five Scots star in Lions' thumping win over Western Force
Finn Russell shone in his first appearance of the 2025 tour [Getty Images] Five Scotland stars were involved in the British & Irish Lions tour-opening victory over the Western Force in Perth, with Huw Jones making his debut. Pierre Schoeman, Scott Cummings, Finn Russell and Sione Tuipulotu were all in from the start while Jones entered in the 55th minute. Advertisement Russell was making his first start of the tour, having missed last weekend's loss to Argentina after guiding Bath to the Premiership title in England. He started in fine fashion, as his cross-kick helped set up captain Dan Sheehan's opening try, before almost scoring a fine solo effort with a disguised tap-and-go in the 35th minute, popping up for Elliot Daly to score when he himself was held short. Tuipulotu was shifted from outside to inside centre and looked slightly more comfortable in partnership with Garry Ringrose. He's the only player to play every minute of the tour so far. Eagle-eyed fans also noticed that Welsh scrum-half Tomos Williams limped from the field after his second try, seemingly nursing a hamstring injury. Advertisement Lions' head coach Andy Farrell has said it's "too early to know" what the impact will be, but Scotland's Ben White will surely be high in Farrell's thinking if a new number nine is needed.

Cubs Reportedly Calling Teams to Find Matt Shaw's Replacement Ahead of MLB Trade Deadline
Cubs Reportedly Calling Teams to Find Matt Shaw's Replacement Ahead of MLB Trade Deadline originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Cubs are expected to make moves during the deadline, and one of them might be replacing Matt Shaw. When Shaw was demoted to Triple-A a few months ago, the idea was for him to eventually come back and figure things out. Instead, Shaw has struggled drastically, getting just four hits in his last 10 games. Advertisement Holding a .215 batting average, it's tough to continue allowing the 23-year-old to struggle at the level he has. While the Cubs need to give Shaw a real chance to compete at the big league level, Chicago is in a position to win a World Series right now. If the Cubs want to be the team they're looking to be, they can't afford for Shaw to continue giving them what he has, which has quite literally been nothing. However, according to a recent report from Northside Baseball's Matthew Trueblood, the Cubs want to improve their roster and possibly replace him. Trueblood reported that the Cubs have contacted the Athletics and the Minnesota Twins for multiple players. Chicago Cubs second base Matt Shaw (6) celebrates after hitting a two run home run against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the seventh inning at Chase Scuteri-Imagn Images 'In a survey of their needs and chances to address them, the Cubs have made calls about players who would shore up their weaknesses on the bench and in the infield rotation, sources said this week. Two trade candidates on their radar are third baseman Luis Urías, of the West Sacramento Athletics, and utility man Willi Castro, of the Twins, and the Cubs have touched base with each of those teams this month,' he wrote. Advertisement Willi Castro would be an interesting player to pursue, but he isn't perfect by any means. Throughout the year, he's impressed, hitting .278 with seven home runs. It's been the best season of his career, which is a bit worrisome, but he played at a decent level last season, too, earning an All-Star nod. With a 124 OPS+, there's reason to believe he could be a decent fit in Chicago. He's a second baseman and shortstop, but it's possible that he'd be willing to move over to third base to solve some of the Cubs' issues. This Florida high school track team just set the fastest time ever in U.S. history
A record-setting track and field team recently captured its fourth major title for IMG Academy. And in doing so, they became the fastest girls 4x800 meter relay team in United States high school track history. Aurora Bertelsen Del Solar, Mackenzie Winning, Danielle Graham and Anyla Robinson won the Millrose Games, Indoor Nationals, Penn Relays and New Balance Nationals Outdoor in the 2025 season. The most recent victory came at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor. During their four-meet sweep, the quartet set and broke their own records in the 4x800 meter relay event. First, the team set a Florida indoor high school record of 8 minutes, 55.47 seconds at the Millrose Games. They followed that with a national high school indoor record of 8:46.04 in the 4x800 meter relay. That time was two seconds faster than the previous record. Bertelsen Del Solar, Winning, Graham and Robinson then shattered their record time at the Penn Relays. At the event, the foursome ran a blistering 8 minutes and 40.51 seconds race to set a new Florida all-time record for either indoor or outdoor in the 4x800 meter girls relay. IMG Academy relay team sets US record 'They recorded a time fast enough to have won at the collegiate level in the same event and meet this year,' a news release said. The team, comprised of three juniors and one sophomore, are returning to IMG Academy next season. 'The girls 4x800m relay team is one of the most talented groups of girls we have seen in the history of high school track and field,' IMG Academy track and field director Mark Napier said in a news release. 'To have only started training together at the beginning of August to now have broken national records, doing what no one has done before, showcases their strength and dedication and IMG Academy's commitment to fostering the growth and development of top student athletes to win their future.' The relay team, though, was not IMG's only standout performance at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor. Yuliya Maslouskaya won the girls heptathlon outdoor national title with the second-best all-time score in United States high school history. Only Anna Hall, who finished fifth in the 2024 Paris Olympics, has a better high school girls heptathlon score. Winston Schroder, a freshman, won the boys decathlon outdoor national championship. He's the only freshman in the event's history to win the decathlon title. Mikey Swanson and Reegan Clutter set meet records in the 400-meter and javelin, respectively, according to the news release.
