Migrant is killed after ‘falling from UK-bound freight truck while trying to board it' near Calais
A migrant has been killed after falling from a UK-bound lorry while trying to board it near the French coastal city of Calais, local authorities said. His body was discovered at around 5.30am (03.30 GMT) today in the Transmarck industrial and logistics zone in the town of Marck, according to the prefecture. The man 'likely' fell from a freight truck he was attempting to board, but an investigation would determine the exact circumstances, it said. Migrants hoping to reach England often gather around the area, hoping to hitch a ride in a lorry trailer. However, enhanced security measures around the Port of Calais and the Channel tunnel have led many migrants to instead attempt the journey across the Channel by sea, often on makeshift boats, a much costlier option. In mid-May, an Eritrean migrant died in Marck after being hit by a freight truck he was trying to board. In early February, another Eritrean migrant died after being struck by a freight truck on the A16 motorway. Since the beginning of the year, 17 people have died attempting to reach England by sea, according to the French interior ministry. However, enhanced security measures around the Port of Calais and the Channel tunnel have led many migrants to instead attempt the journey across the Channel by sea, often on makeshift boats, a much costlier option. Pictured: A migrant small boat passes the beech at Gravelines, France on July 10 Last year, nearly 37,000 migrants managed to make their way to the UK on small boats. Two years prior, nearly 46,000 migrants were smuggled into Britain. More than 150,000 migrants have crossed the Channel into the UK since 2018. So far, over 4,000 migrants have made the dangerous crossing into the UK this year, with numbers and rates expected to rise as the weather gets warmer in the spring and summer. In March an inquiry heard that 27 migrants died trying to enter the UK after Border Force allegedly rescued the wrong boat. Around 33 people are believed to have been on board an inflatable dinghy which sank in the early hours of November 24, 2021 - killing at least 27 of its passengers including men, women and children. It is said to be the deadliest-ever English Channel crossing on record. Last week, migrants in Calais vowed to 'stop at nothing' to cross the Channel to the UK regardless of the obstacles put in their way. If Sir Keir Starmer expects his 'one-in-one-out' returns deal with France to act as a significant deterrent to future crossings, these words suggest he will be disappointed. So just why are migrants prepared to risk their lives to make it to Britain? France has long complained the UK makes it too easy for illegal migrants to work and claim benefits, with one of Emmanuel Macron's MPs recently branding it an 'El Dorado for migrants'. Their is some truth to this claim, with even Home Secretary Yvette Cooper accepting that the country's dark economy - where migrants are able to work without papers - is a potential 'pull factor'. Employers have been required since 2008 to carry out 'right to work' checks on their staff, and risk a £60,000 for every person found working illegally. But these checks only apply to people who are classified as employees, with companies who used self-employed workers exempted. This means that anyone in the 'gig economy', which now covers about 1.6million people, can work with far less scrutiny.

Black Forest Fire case remains active 12 years later
(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — June 11 marks 12 years since the deadly Black Forest Fire burned more than 14,000 acres and destroyed 489 homes. On Tuesday, June 11, 2013, the fire broke out and burned for days until it was declared fully contained on Thursday evening, June 20. The El Paso County Sheriff's Office (EPSO) has stated in the past that the Black Forest Fire was a 'cold case' due to the passage of time, with no new information. While the origin of the fire is known, the cause has not been determined. FOX21 News reached out to EPSO on the eve of the fire anniversary for an update on the status of the case. 'This case remains active, and no further details can be released at this time,' said a spokesperson with EPSO. Overall, the fire burned 14,280 acres, causing over $420 million in damage to the region. The total cost of fighting the fire was $9.23 million. The fire also claimed the lives of two people, Marck and Robin Hecklotz, who were both longtime members of Space Command and were killed when trying to leave their home in Black Forest. At that time, the wildfire became the most destructive in Colorado's history, surpassing the Waldo Canyon Fire just a year earlier. Since then, the 2021 Marshall Fire in Boulder County became the most destructive. D20 students to reforest a portion of Black Forest scar Reforestation efforts continue in the Black Forest burn scar. Most recently, students from the Academy School District 20 (D20) partnered with the Colorado State Forest Service to plant 100 tree seedlings in the area. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
