Black Forest Fire case remains active 12 years later
(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — June 11 marks 12 years since the deadly Black Forest Fire burned more than 14,000 acres and destroyed 489 homes.
On Tuesday, June 11, 2013, the fire broke out and burned for days until it was declared fully contained on Thursday evening, June 20.
The El Paso County Sheriff's Office (EPSO) has stated in the past that the Black Forest Fire was a 'cold case' due to the passage of time, with no new information. While the origin of the fire is known, the cause has not been determined.
FOX21 News reached out to EPSO on the eve of the fire anniversary for an update on the status of the case.
'This case remains active, and no further details can be released at this time,' said a spokesperson with EPSO.
Overall, the fire burned 14,280 acres, causing over $420 million in damage to the region. The total cost of fighting the fire was $9.23 million. The fire also claimed the lives of two people, Marck and Robin Hecklotz, who were both longtime members of Space Command and were killed when trying to leave their home in Black Forest.
At that time, the wildfire became the most destructive in Colorado's history, surpassing the Waldo Canyon Fire just a year earlier. Since then, the 2021 Marshall Fire in Boulder County became the most destructive.
D20 students to reforest a portion of Black Forest scar
Reforestation efforts continue in the Black Forest burn scar. Most recently, students from the Academy School District 20 (D20) partnered with the Colorado State Forest Service to plant 100 tree seedlings in the area.

EPSO breaks ground on new substation
(EL PASO COUNTY, Colo.) — In a push to cut down on response times, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office (EPSO) broke ground on a new substation in Falcon, set to open next year. 'I anticipate having at least 50% of my patrol division out here at this substation, which will easily serve Black Forest, eastern El Paso County, and Monument, so we're able to respond much better,' said Sheriff Joseph Roybal. Sheriff Roybal tells FOX21 News service calls in unincorporated El Paso County increased by nearly 50% over the last ten years. He believes the facility will play a key role in reducing crime and strengthening efforts to hold criminals accountable. 'The groundbreaking we are celebrating marks the start of construction on what will become the first full-service standalone substation in the Sheriff's office history. Long overdue,' said Sheriff Roybal. New EPSO substation aims to bring faster emergency response to growing El Paso County It's no secret, the population in the region continues to grow. With nearly 753,000 people, Sheriff Roybal said El Paso County could top one million by 2050, which makes this new location even more important. 'By enhancing our presence in this region, we are taking decisive steps to deter criminal activity, reduce victimizations, and improve the overall quality of life for those who live in unincorporated El Paso County,' said Roybal. The more than $16 million substation is funded through the Sheriff's Office existing budget, with most of the money coming from the public safety sales tax. Local leaders like Carrie Geitner, who serves as a commissioner in this district, said the process was streamlined because the Falcon Fire Protection District Station 1 let them use the land. 'This is a project years in the making,' Commissioner Geitner explained. 'We have all heard the desire and needs of this community to have more law enforcement presence out here.' The substation will be located at 12062 Royal County Down Road, in Falcon, adjacent to Falcon Fire Protection District Station 1. It will open Fall 2026 with 40 deputies ready to serve and protect the community. 'Making it even easier for deputies to connect with the community, respond quickly and keep our area safe,' said Commissioner Geitner. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
