Bookish review: Mark Gatiss is brilliant in this series - just don't call it cosy crime

Many a fictional detective has an extracurricular talent that feeds into their work; Sherlock Holmes and his violin; Inspector Morse and his crossword skills; Columbo's fluency in several languages. In Mark Gatiss' new crime series Bookish, the co-creator and co-writer of Sherlock stars as Gabriel Book, for whom the detective work is the extracurricular talent. Mark Gatiss as the eccentric Gabriel Bookl in Bookish. Credit: © Toon Aerts Book is an eccentric antiquarian bookshop owner who is also adept at solving mysteries. He draws on his encyclopaedic literary knowledge to help figure out motives, methods and the psychology behind all manner of crimes. Book regularly helps out the local police, led by the affable Inspector Bliss (Elliot Levey), and if anybody queries his involvement, he tells them he 'has a letter from Churchill'. (A bit like Doctor Who's psychic paper, the mere mention of it seems to satisfy anybody who asks). Bookish is set in London in 1946, a less common setting for period drama; Gatiss, a long-time detective fan (as well as Sherlock he has adapted several of Agatha Christie's Poirot stories for British TV, and starred in the series Marple), has said it's a favourite time period of his, given the state of the world: women suddenly empowered (although expected to return to their kitchens), lots of weapons brought back by soldiers, a radical government, and a sense of hope. But no shortage of criminal activity. Gatiss with his 'wife' Trottie (Polly Walker). Credit: Max We first meet Book when a young man, Jack (Connor Finch), freshly released from prison, shows up for a job he's been given at the bookshop. Jack moves in with Book and his wife Trottie (Bridgerton's Polly Walker), who runs a specialty wallpaper shop next door to the bookshop. Gabriel and Trottie seem very much in love – but they have a secret: theirs is a 'lavender marriage', the term given to a marriage where one or both parties are gay, when such a thing is illegal. The pair have long been best friends, having met as children, and Trottie is aware of Book's 'proclivities', which must be kept secret. Especially from the police he spends so much time with. Jack is initially daunted by both Book and his books (all of which are 'catalogued' in a manner as oddball as the man himself), and understandably baffled that the local coppers defer to Book on criminal matters. But he soon comes around – and learns that he hasn't been taken in by the couple by coincidence.

Watch: Five wickets in final over! Epic club match ends in dramatic tie in England

(Video grab) Cricket fans witnessed one of the most dramatic finishes in recent memory as Marple CC lost five wickets in the final over, needing just one run to win, and ended up tying the match against Bramhall CC in the Cheshire County Cricket League on Saturday, July 12. In a gripping 2nd XI clash at the Michael Hibbert Cricket Ground, Marple were cruising towards a comfortable win, chasing Bramhall's total of 201. With the score at 201/5 in the final over, the equation was simple: one run to win, five wickets in hand. But what followed was nothing short of extraordinary. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Josh Patel turned hero for Bramhall, taking four wickets in four balls — a stunning hat-trick followed by an lbw — to suddenly reduce Marple to 201/9. His victims included Andrew Wild, Joel Greasley, Edward Skelton, and Ben Bailey. Jasprit Bumrah and Joe Root react to the Dukes ball drama at Lord's | IND vs ENG With two balls remaining, Marple captain James Hirst walked in as the last batter. He tapped his first ball into the off-side and went for the winning run. But Andy Tatton fielded sharply and threw it to wicketkeeper Ed Gray, who completed a clean run-out of non-striker Greg Marsland to tie the game in unbelievable fashion. Only four of the five wickets were captured on video — but the footage, which has since gone viral, captures the chaotic, thrilling nature of grassroots cricket at its best. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like You Won't Believe the Price of These Dubai Apartments Binghatti Developers FZE Get Offer Undo WATCH: Earlier, Bramhall's 201 was built around a gritty 57 from skipper Rishi Kannah. Marple looked in control during their chase thanks to a 119-run stand between Will Darby (73) and James Crisall (54), but Patel's final over heroics turned the game on its head. EastEnders' Michelle Ryan breaks silence on jaw-dropping Zoe Slater return

Two decades on, EastEnders viewers have been left gobsmacked to see Zoe Slater back on screen - and in a very bad way Actress Michelle Ryan has spoken out after her iconic EastEnders character Zoe Slater made an explosive return on Monday evening. Kat Slater's daughter Zoe was last seen in Albert Square over 20 years ago in 2005 after mistakenly believing she had killed her lover Dirty Den Watts. Before jetting off to Ibiza, she dropped a bombshell about Den fathering her baby and suffering a miscarriage, revealing that she had had an abortion. ‌ Now, two decades on, viewers were left gobsmacked to see Zoe back on screen and in a very bad way. Having stolen Kat's credit card and seeming to have gone on a bender, Zoe looked hungover and had been sick. Desperate for help in the situation, Stacey (Lacey Turner) had called Alfie (Shane Richie), who had become her step-dad once again after remarrying Kat last week. ‌ He greeted her before the duff-duff: "Hello Zoe." Speaking after her shock return, Michelle explained her reason for making a comeback after so many years. She said: "It all happened at the right time. I'd already been thinking about a return because I'd met up with Kacey Ainsworth (Little Mo) and Kim Medcalf (Sam Mitchell) and we were reminiscing our fond memories of the show, and I'd also joined social media and saw that there was still a lot of love for the character. "It just so happened that at the same time, EastEnders had announced a new Exec who was keen to explore the potential of a return as he was such a massive fan of Zoe and the Slaters, so both of our worlds aligned at the right time, and I'm so excited to be back. When Ben pitched me the storylines, and when I read the scripts, I knew it was the right decision." Fans of the BBC soap will remember that Zoe had initially been introduced as Kat's sister alongside Little Mo and Lynne way back in 2000. However, just a year later, one of the most shocking soap scenes unfolded in Walford as Kat and Zoe became embroiled in a furious spat in the street, with Zoe screaming "You ain't my muvva!" before storming off. Kat then screamed back: "Yes I am!" And so, the most legendary soap exchange was born, as was a bitter mother-daughter relationship spanning over 24 years. ‌ It was later revealed that Zoe was a product of incest after Kat was just 13 when she was raped by her uncle Harry Slater in the 80s. Zoe had been adopted by Kat's parents Charlie and Viv, with the dark family secret kept from Zoe for years. Zoe is now in her 40s and will appear in episodes across this week before leaving once again to get herself sorted. She is set to return to Albert Square later this summer as a permanent cast member. ‌ After quitting EastEnders to pursue other work projects in the noughties, she appeared in Toby Young and Lloyd Evans play Who's the Daddy? at the King's Head Theatre, before enjoying a small role in Agatha Christie's Marple in 2006. But Michelle's big break came just a year later as she played opposite Billie Piper in ITV's Mansfield Park as Maria before being cast as the lead in drama Bionic Woman, a remake of the 70s series. The US TV show aired on NBC in 2007 and saw her play Jaime Sommers, for which she learned Krav Maga and sign language. ‌ The show was cancelled after just one season due to low ratings, though Michelle had said it came about because Bionic Woman kept changing direction. Michelle had also appeared in the BBC's Jekyll, a modern retelling of the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, alongside James Nesbitt. She went on to star as sorceress Nimueh in BBC drama series Merlin and various films and TV shows including 2012's Cockneys vs Zombies, Death in Paradise and 2017 British drama film The Last Photograph.
