GRS confident of reclaiming Lamag seat
Masiung giving his address. SANDAKAN (July 11): Local parties under the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition are gearing up to challenge Umno/Barisan Nasional (BN) in Lamag ahead of the 17th Sabah State Election (PRN-17). Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) Vice President Datuk Masiung Banah expressed confidence that GRS, led by Gagasan Rakyat, is well-positioned to win back the Lamag state seat from the opposition. 'I see the political momentum in Sabah, particularly in Lamag, clearly favouring local parties,' he said during the official launch of the new Gagasan Rakyat Lamag office, headed by division chief Abu Bakar Gapar, in Bukit Garam yesterday. Masiung, who is also the Kuamut assemblyman, highlighted Gagasan Rakyat's strong presence and commitment in Lamag, describing it as the backbone of the GRS coalition. He said GRS is committed to fielding the best possible candidate to secure victory in the upcoming polls. 'The three key party wings — Pemuda (Youth), Wanita (Women) and Beliawanis (Young Women) — have already begun mobilising throughout the constituency,' he said, adding that the GRS party wings are now fully aligned with their respective District Polling Centre (PDM) networks. Masiung also urged the party wings in Lamag to remain diligent and responsive to leadership directives. He stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation among Gagasan Rakyat's election machinery and coalition partners within GRS to win over the support of voters in the constituency. Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin is the incumbent Lamag assemblyman.

GRS-PH seat talks ongoing, says Gagasan Rakyat VP
Published on: Tuesday, June 24, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 24, 2025 Text Size: SANDAKAN: Seat distribution between Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) is still under discussion and has yet to be finalised, said Gagasan Rakyat Vice President Datuk Masiung Banah. He noted that some GRS component parties have not submitted their proposed list of candidates. "The matter will be detailed in the upcoming GRS-PH Presidential Council meeting," he said after officiating the Gagasan Rakyat Gum-Gum Division Annual General Meeting. Masiung clarified that while he's not directly involved in GRS meetings, updates are usually communicated by the Gagasan Rakyat president, who also leads GRS. "Seat allocation is still being negotiated. However, GRS under the Gagasan Rakyat banner should contest at least 53 seats, while PH will likely contest the remaining 20," he stated. He urged party grassroots to respect the decisions of the Presidential Council, as it serves as the decision-making body within GRS. Advertisement Masiung also observed that current voter sentiment favours local parties but stressed that cooperation with PH remains vital due to its alignment with the Prime Minister. Over 1,500 delegates and observers attended the meeting led by division chief Datuk Juslie Ajirol and deputy Datuk Jaffari Waliam. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? GRS must lead any cooperation, but PH's past support must not be forgotten, says Masiung
Datuk Masiung Banah speaks during the PGRS Gum Gum annual meeting in Sandakan. SANDAKAN: While advocating for Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) to maintain its dominance in the forthcoming state election, the coalition must not overlook the significant role played by Pakatan Harapan (PH) in stabilising the Sabah government in the past, says Datuk Masiung Banah. 'The voters want local parties to lead and be dominant this time. That's why I stressed we must contest 52 or 53 seats. Only then will the people see us as dominant. If not, the rakyat will criticise us,' said the vice-president of Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat). He said this during the annual general meeting of Gum Gum GRS at the Rainforest Discovery Centre hall, here, on Sunday (June 22). The event was chaired by the division chief, Datuk Juslie Ajirol, who was also a former Libaran MP. 'I think Sabahans are kind and rational. Even if the sentiment is for local parties, they will understand if we explain to them why we have to work with Pakatan, because Pakatan once helped save our government that local parties led,' Masiung said in his speech. He also encouraged party members to concentrate on strengthening grassroots preparations and to avoid becoming distracted by speculation regarding party collaborations and seat negotiations. Masiung said he was not involved in the Party President Council within GRS and does not know how others feel about the seat allocations. However, the final decision on seat distribution and cooperation lies with the GRS leadership, particularly its chairman and Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. 'Once a decision is made, everyone should respect and follow it. I understand the GRS council will meet again soon,' said Masiung The state election is expected to be called in the coming months, with negotiations ongoing among parties under GRS and its federal-level allies. To date, no formal pact has been formed by any parties in the state.

GRS, PH on right track for election pact, says senior leader
Gagasan Rakyat Sabah vice-president Masiung Banah said Sabah PH has continuously expressed support for GRS chairman Hajiji Noor's leadership. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Gabungan Rakyat Sabah and Pakatan Harapan are on the right track to reach a pact for the upcoming Sabah election, a senior GRS leader said today. Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah vice-president Masiung Banah cited GRS chairman Hajiji Noor's consistent willingness to work with PH for the state polls as a major reason for this. He also said Sabah PH had continuously expressed support for the leadership of Hajiji, who is the chief minister, Jesselton Times reported. Masiung said the GRS Supreme Council would decide on the matter when it meets. 'If this partnership is confirmed, GRS and PH will establish a joint committee in each district to ensure that our candidates succeed in the 17th state election. 'GRS aligns with Barisan Nasional in the latter's decision not to collaborate for the state election,' he said. Last month, the unity government secretariat announced that BN and PH had agreed to work together to face the state election, following a meeting between their chairmen, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Anwar Ibrahim. Hajiji then threatened that GRS would go solo if this pact was finalised, but Anwar later stepped in and called for PH-BN to work with the state coalition. Sabah BN chief Bung Moktar Radin later said the coalition would not work with GRS in the state election but would consider cooperation only after the outcome of the polls.
