GRS–PH pact likely ahead of Sabah polls

By: Syakilla Maarof Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: A formal election pact between Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and Sabah Pakatan Harapan (PH) is increasingly likely ahead of the 17th state election. Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) vice-president Datuk Masiung Banah ( pic ) said both blocs have shown mutual support, forming the basis for a collaborative campaign.
Advertisement He revealed PH has expressed backing for Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor's administration, with final details to be confirmed at a GRS Supreme Council meeting. Larry Sng's PBM to contest solo in Sabah polls
PBM president Larry Sng said the party's roots trace back to Sabah although it is now a national party. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Parti Bangsa Malaysia will be contesting in the impending Sabah elections and will not be forming any electoral pact with any major coalition for the polls, party president Larry Sng said. He told The Borneo Post that the party's decision to contest on its own was driven by grassroots' support and PBM's historical roots in Sabah. Among the seats PBM is eyeing are Bandau, Tanjung Papat and Kadamaian. 'Currently we are finalising the seats and the candidates, but tentatively we are looking at two to three constituencies,' Sng was quoted as saying. The three seats are currently represented by Perikatan National, Warisan and Upko. 'Whether or not we win is a secondary issue. The important thing is that we will be able to give people an option to choose,' he said. Sng said that although PBM is now a national party, its roots were in Sabah where it had developed a significant support base, with 65% of its members being from the state. He did not rule out working with the state government should PBM win any seats. 'We will be able to work with the government and play a stabilising role.' PBM's decision to throw its hat into the ring, comes days after Barisan Nasional chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi held firm to BN's alliance with Pakatan Harapan. The state's ruling coalition, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah, has also announced a similar pact with PH. The five-year term of the Sabah state assembly expires on Nov 11, unless dissolved sooner. Elections must be held within 60 days of dissolution.

Fire near Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant contained: Russia
A fire that broke out near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant after Ukrainian shelling has been brought under control, the Russian-installed administration of the Russia-held plant in Ukraine said on Saturday. Russian forces seized the Zaporizhzhia plant in the first weeks of Russia's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Both sides have accused each other of firing or taking other actions that could trigger a nuclear accident. The plant's administration said on Telegram that a civilian had been killed in the shelling, but that no plant employees or members of the emergency services had been injured. Reuters could not independently verify the Russian report. The station, Europe's biggest nuclear power plant, is not operating but still requires power to keep its nuclear fuel cool. The plant's Russia-installed management said radiation levels remained within normal levels and the situation was under control. - Reuters

The compliment followed Malaysia's success in getting both nations' leaders to agree on a ceasefire after weeks of tension, achieved through coordinated efforts by the Foreign Ministry, armed forces and national leadership. Anwar said the ceasefire has boosted Malaysia's reputation internationally, with recognition from Washington to London for uniting Asean in securing peace. He remains in contact with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, who confirmed there has been no fighting and requested Malaysia's help to facilitate further talks.
