Shivrattan Dhillon recently took to X to express his strong disagreement with Delhi's fuel ban for older cars running in the city. The government's decision to combat pollution and encourage sustainable mobility by prohibiting older vehicles from refuelling with petrol or diesel sparked widespread online outrage. Many voiced frustration with the strict law, arguing that their older vehicles, though well-maintained and compliant with pollution tests, faced impoundment or scrapping if caught by cameras at select city petrol pumps. Dhillon was among the many who voiced their anger, and his post about his father's 16-year-old Mercedes went viral on 'X' while resonating with many who found themselves in a similar sticky situation. End-of-life Rule On Hold The rule that came into effect on July 1 lasted two days, after which it was put on hold. 'Delhi Chief Minister has assured residents that old vehicles will not be impounded arbitrarily. We will not allow old vehicles to be impounded. At the same time, we are committed to controlling pollution in Delhi," Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said. This came after a widespread backlash from Delhi residents and criticism from opposition leaders. 'Delhi residents are already facing issues regarding End-of-Life Vehicles. The government has written to the Chairman of CAQM (Commission for Air Quality Management) and stated that it lacks the necessary infrastructure to implement the policy," he added as he acknowledged the discontent of the Delhi residents over the end-of-life rule. Sigh Of Relief As the Delhi government paused the End-of-Life vehicle impounding policy, Dhillon once again took to 'X', this time to express his happiness that the voice of the common citizen prevailed. He claimed he received upwards of 500 messages from people who offered him twice or triple the current price of an old Mercedes E280 V6. A larger section of Delhi residents has come forward to raise concerns about losing their luxurious or well-maintained vehicles due to the rule. Joining the bandwagon, an individual named Shivrattan Dhillon took to the X platform and spoke about his father's 16-year-old Mercedes E280, which he claimed was in much better condition than the modern cars on the roads. Dhillon said he was forced to label his father's car a 'vintage scrap" because of the fuel ban and challenged the Delhi government to prove that the vehicle contributes to pollution. One of the users dropped a suggestion: 'In most countries, you can apply for a heritage license (called the Club Permit Scheme) for vintage vehicles. With the condition that it cannot be used for commercial purposes. We should have one as well!" The story is among the many similar ones now surfacing from the heart of Delhi. Earlier, a resident named Varun Vij had to sell his 2015 Mercedes-Benz ML350 for Rs 2.5 lakh. The vehicle was originally bought for Rs 84 lakhs; however, the ban made him give it out for just 'peanuts.' In the post, the user, who goes by the name Rattan Dhillon, shared how the car, a Mercedes-Benz E280 V6, still runs perfectly. He claimed that the 16-year-old vehicle is cleaner than most of the "so-called modern cars", emits zero pollution and can still go from 0-100 in just 6-7 seconds. However, Mr Dhillon said that, sadly, he has to label his car a "vintage scrap" due to the government's newly enforced "end of life" (EoL) vehicle policy in the national capital. Many emphasised with the Delhi man, highlighting the emotional and mechanical value of well-maintained vehicles. "It's sad to see such beautiful and mighty machines without any valid reason are going to scrap," wrote one user. "Such a timeless piece, white beauty, pls do not sell!" commented another. "This old machine with seperate headlights was my childhood dream. Sad to see the state of politicians in this country," said a third user. "It's really disheartening to see this happening," expressed another. "Exactly my point. Age based obsolescence is nonsense. Have they prepared for the waste it's gonna generate by junking these cars?" asked one user. "This is just sad. It's a beautiful piece of machinery and a shame to junk it," another user said. Mr Dhillon's post comes just a day after the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) announced a ban on refuelling diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years, effective from July 1, even if they pass fitness tests. Currently, Delhi is the first region in NCR to roll out the EoL fuel ban. But by November 1, 2025, neighbouring cities like Gurugram, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad will come under similar rules.

'But sadly, I have to label it a 'vintage scrap' just because we live in a country where politicians have zero love for cars! I challenge the government to prove it pollutes. They won't, but they'll still penalize it!' the user added. Many other social media users sympathised with the user. 'Can a PIL not be filed? This is outrageous,' asked one user while Dhillion replied, 'No one gonna listen.' 'Cars are not just a machine. They are memories,' wrote one user. Another wrote, 'This model has been my dream car since I was a student. What a timeless design!' 'This is insane and a clear attempt at extracting unfair taxes,' came from another. 'Exactly my point. Age-based obsolescence is nonsense. Have they prepared for the waste it's gonna generate by junking these cars?' wondered one user. However, not everyone agreed with him. 'Why didn't u challenge the NGT in 2014? Why didn't u challenge the Supreme Court in 2018? Why didn't u challenge the government in 2021 when it was framing the scrap policy?' asked one user. Another user declared, 'Rules won't be changed just because your dad owns a Mercedes. Follow it or relocate to a place where there are no rules.' As per the Supreme Court and National Green Tribunal (NGT) orders, diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years cannot run in Delhi-NCR. These vehicles will be deregistered and must be scrapped or converted to electric. If found running, the car will be seized and scrapped. Delhi's vehicle scrappage policy now bans petrol vehicles older than 15 years and diesel vehicles older than 10 years from being refuelled. The policy was enforced on July 1, 2025. Vehicle owners have the option to either provide written assurance to keep their vehicles off Delhi roads. They can also obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to relocate them.
