Edinburgh school ‘protected' abusers for decades
Merchiston Castle School, which charges annual fees of up to £50,000, issued an 'unreserved apology', with headmaster Jonathan Anderson and Gareth Baird, chairman of the board of governors, describing Lady Smith's report as 'detailed, fair and, at times, a difficult read'. They added: 'It uncovers a history of unacceptable abuse suffered by many former pupils and highlights the enduring impact on their lives decades later. 'To all those who suffered abuse while in the care of Merchiston Castle School, we offer our most sincere and unreserved apology. No child should ever suffer harm, especially not in a place that exists to nurture and educate. Those who were abused by their teachers or their fellow pupils deserved better, and we are truly sorry that they were so badly let down.' The report said indecency occurred from the 1950s to the 2010s, however Lady Smith said that 'by the early 2000s, Merchiston thought itself a leader in the child protection field'. Abusers protected by 'tradition' Lady Smith said that 'references were badly handled and child protection concerns ignored', while voyeurism and indecent assaults were common. She added: 'Abusers, and potential abusers, were sometimes protected by tradition, long service, or governor loyalty.' The findings, part of the inquiry's overall boarding schools case study, found that 'in common with Loretto School, Morrison's Academy, Gordonstoun, and Queen Victoria School, children who boarded at Merchiston were exposed to risks of suffering sexual, physical and emotional abuse'. Lady Smith concluded the two main perpetrators at Merchiston were 'virtually untouchable'. Normalised abusive behaviour She said: 'From the 1950s to the second decade of the 21st century, there was a more or less continuous line of consistent indecency perpetrated by two prolific abusers, Mervyn Preston and James Rainy Brown. 'The former taught the latter, who then returned to Merchiston as a teacher, after which they worked together. 'They engaged in abusive behaviour which became normalised for generations of boys. 'In the cases of both those men, their longstanding service and positions of power in boarding houses rendered them virtually untouchable. 'In total, eight teachers abused children sexually. Seven were male and one was female. 'Conduct included voyeurism, encouraging nudity, indecent exposure, indecent assaults, and in the case of the female, it included encouraging senior pupils to engage in sexual intercourse with her.' 'Obvious abusive trends' She said the school's strong culture of rugby and sport left those who did not fit in vulnerable to abuse and bullying. She said by the millennium, the school was 'content to rely on positive but, in fact, inadequate and insufficiently critical' inspections, while 'obvious abusive trends' were missed – until 2014 when a wider police inquiry revealed many longstanding weaknesses in child protection and pastoral care. Following a poor inspection report in 2015, Merchiston was made subject to special measures by the Scottish government. It was obliged to respond, and Lady Smith said it was 'well led by its board of governors', and policies 'were corrected and became meaningful'. 'Deep and lasting harm' Mr Anderson and Mr Baird added: 'That sexual, physical and emotional abuse of children at our school was allowed to continue for so long is deeply upsetting and we respect and we thank our former pupils who had the courage and bravery to speak about their experiences in evidence to the inquiry. 'Their collective testimonies painted a picture of a school that fostered a culture of fear, bullying and abuse that is hard to fathom, and unrecognisable with the school that exists today. 'We fully accept these criticisms, we acknowledge these failures, and we recognise the deep and lasting harm that was caused. The school is wholeheartedly committed to ensuring the lessons of the past are fully learned. 'Safeguarding is our number one priority and the wellbeing of the young people in our care is of paramount importance to us. 'Following a negative inspection report in 2015, Merchiston was placed under special measures by the Scottish Government. This was a turning point and as Lady Smith recognises in her report, we responded promptly and decisively.'

Jacob Fearnley into first big tournament quarter final
Edinburgh tennis player Jacob Fearnley reached his first ATP 500 quarter final when he powered away in the deciding set to defeat Corentin Moutet of France 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 on a packed Queen's Club Andy Murray Arena. After a dramatic slump in the middle set which included three double faults in a single game Fearnley began hitting with more power and dictating rallies against an opponent who had defeated world no 4 Taylor Fritz in the previous round after coming through qualifying. Whatever Fearnley said to himself during a five minute bathroom break certainly worked. The contrast in approach suddenly became striking as Fearnley, watched by mum Samantha and girlfriend, Keegan, came out swinging, hitting lines and attacking the net. Ex-Colinton junior and Merchiston Castle School tennis alumni Fearnley now plays Czech Jiri Lehecka, world no 30 who, in January this year defeated man of the moment Carlos Alcaraz in Doha. Lehecka can only be a more straight forward opponent than Moutet who proved volatile in the extreme, picking up two time violations and arguing repeatedly with the umpire. On having his serve broken at the start of the third set the Frenchman reacted by firing a ball hire into the grandstands. To a less focused player than Fearnley it could have been a major distraction especially occurring right at the end of the third set. But the Scot held his concentration and won huge acclaim for not only his rampant forehand but a series of backhand winners as Moutet even resorted to an underhand serve to break up the rhythm of the contest. Interviewed on court afterwards, Jacob said: 'I tried to stick to my game plan and be aggressive. I did that better in the third set and the result speaks for itself. 'It's really special to have everyone here and watch me play on this stage.' By reaching the quarter finals Jacob is guaranteed 69,500 euros and 100 ranking points which should push him back into the world's top 50. Jacob Fearnley is into his first ATP 500 quarter final at Queen's Club. Like this: Like Related

Jacob building up to Wimbledon
Edinburgh tennis pro Jacob Fearnley is reaping further benefits from the outstanding start to his career – world No 509 a year ago, and now he is pushing the top 50 – with a direct acceptance announced for one of the top Wimbledon warm up tournaments. It has been announced that the former Colinton junior and Merchiston Castle School tennis graduate will play in the Lexus ATP 250 tournament in Eastbourne from June 21-28. 'I made my ATP Tour debut in Eastbourne last year, so this is an event that is special for me' Jacob, the British No 2, told the Lawn Tennis Association website, adding: 'I love competing on the grass, I think it's a great surface for my game so hopefully I can challenge for more success this year. 'Getting to compete in front of your home fans is always an incredible feeling and being on the south coast in Eastbourne makes it one of the most unique events in the calendar. 'Winning the title in Nottingham last summer, in my first tournament out of college, gave me a huge amount of confidence and it's helped me get where I am today. I love competing on the grass, I think it's a great surface for my game so hopefully I can challenge for more success this year.' Jacob Fearnley Fearnley burst on the scene last summer after winning his first ATP Challenger Tour title in only his first event out of college in Nottingham. The 23-year-old came through qualifying to become the fourth Briton to win the trophy, which helped him secure a wild card to Wimbledon. Not only did Fearnley pick up his first Grand Slam win on his singles debut at SW19, he went on to take a set off seven-time champion Novak Djokovic on Centre Court in front of a packed out crowd. The Texas Christian University graduate has soared up the rankings ever since. He finished the 2024 season with four ATP Challenger titles and broke into the ATP top 100 in just his first six months on tour. So far this season, he's had his best run at a major to date – reaching the third round at the Australian Open, made his Davis Cup debut for the Lexus GB team in Japan and qualified for two ATP Masters 1000 events in Miami and Madrid. He's now up at a career-high ranking of world No.68. Now with a full season under his belt, more experience on the grass and having established himself on the ATP Tour, Fearnley will be one of the players to watch in Eastbourne this summer. For the moment Jacob's pre-occupation is the clay court season with direct acceptance to the upcoming Italian Open followed by the French grand slam event. In Rome he will want to cast aside any frustration from bowing out of the Madrid Open against Grigor Dimitrov when, in a second set tie-break to level the match, uncharacteristic errors undermined his display at critical times including two backhands into the net and an overhit forehand to give the Bulgarian his conclusive match point. In some respects one that got away after battling his way back into the match with the aid of an exquisite backhand smash and a superb stretch volley but Jacob can take encouragement from running the experienced former ATP Tour champion so close and knowing he is more than comfortable in such company. Gareth Baird, Chairman, Merchiston Castle School The new 'Day' structure has been created in direct response to the changing financial pressures facing families in 2025, including the introduction of VAT on school fees and wider inflationary challenges. He said: 'Merchiston has a long-standing reputation for excellence in both education and character development.
