Kishore Kumar once called Mumbai a 'friendless city', revealed he was 'conned' into acting: 'Everyone seeks to exploit you'

Kishore Kumar was more than just a voice, he was a whirlwind of talent, mischief and magic. From singing timeless hits like 'Roop Tera Mastana' and 'Mere Sapno Ki Rani' to playing unforgettable roles in 'Padosan' and 'Half Ticket', he ruled hearts across generations. But behind the laughter and melodies was a man deeply troubled by fame and the city that came with it. Kishore once revealed how Mumbai never felt like home, only a trap. In a throwback with The Illustrated Weekly of India, Kishore opened up about how much he disliked the city and the film industry . The 'Zindagi Ek Safar Hai Suhana' singer didn't hold back as he said, 'Who can live in this stupid, friendless city where everyone seeks to exploit you every moment of the day? Can you trust anyone out here? Is anyone trustworthy? Is anyone a friend you can count on? I am determined to get out of this futile rat race and live as I've always wanted to. In my native Khandwa, the land of my forefathers. Who wants to die in this ugly city?' A career he never wanted Many people don't know that Kishore Kumar never wanted to be an actor. His real dream was to sing. But because of his brother Ashok Kumar 's fame, the film world pulled him into acting. He further said, 'I was conned into doing this. All I wanted was to sing, and yet due to peculiar circumstances, I was persuaded to act in the movies. The directors don't give a dan about me, they just need me because I sell.'* Doing everything to avoid acting Kishore Kumar went to great lengths to avoid acting in films. He used all sorts of tricks to get out of it, even behaving in ways people thought were strange. He admitted, 'I have tried every trick in the book to get out of acting. I muffed my lines, pretended to be crazy, shaved my head off, played difficult, began yodelling in the midst of tragic scenes, told Meena Kumari what I was supposed to tell Bina Rai in some other film. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo They still wouldn't let me go, and I hated every second of it.' Despite all this, the film industry wouldn't let him go, because he was a star, and they knew he sold tickets. The real reason he came to Mumbai The 'Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas' singer never moved to Mumbai to become a star. He only came because he hoped to meet his singing idol, KL Saigal, through his brother Ashok. He revealed, 'The industry was determined to make a star out of me because I was dadamoni's (Ashok) brother.' A dream that remained unfulfilled Kishore had made up his mind to leave Mumbai and go back to Khandwa, his hometown. He wanted to leave the city and the stress behind, and return to a peaceful life. But life had other plans. Though he needed two more years to wrap up his work, he sadly passed away before he could move. Kishore Kumar passed away due to a heart attack on 13 October 1987 in Mumbai. Kishore Kumar's son Amit Kumar recalls sleeping between his father and stepmother, shares he used to kick his ' mummy' Madhubala in sleep In the glamorous world of Bollywood, where everything seems picture-perfect from the outside, there is a lot that happens behind the curtains than what meets the eye. While tales of fame and stardom are usually what we see on the forefront, personal struggles, complicated interpersonal relationships are rarely spoken about. One such tale belongs to a legendary singer who had achieved massive success in terms of his profession, but his personal life was full of complications, four marriages, shifting family dynamics, and complex relationships. The person we are talking about is none other than Kishore Kumar. Widely known as the biggest playback singer, the legendary star was an actor, producer, and screenwriter. Although he made his debut as an actor but it was his iconic singing that rose him to fame. He has given his voice to many A-list iconic stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Deva Anand, and more. Some of his cult classic that resonates with the audience even today are 'Zindagi ek safar', 'Pal Pal Dil Ke Pass', 'Mere Sapno Ki Rani', and many more. However, while his professional life was full of success, his personal life was rather complicated. He had four marriages. Ruma Guha Thakurta, legendary actress Madhubala, Yogeeta Bali, and then finally Leena Chandvarkar. Kishore Kumar has been in the news many times for his complicated love life, especially with Madhubala, as that was a blend of love and tragedy. However, recently, his son, Amit Kumar, opened up about the lesser-known part of his life. He shared about his childhood and how, even after the complex dynamics of his father and mother, Ruma Guha Thakurta, he never felt any sort of resentment towards his father for remarrying. Expressing his gratitude, he shared, 'I got love from both parents. I loved both, and they saw to it, He made another surprising revelation about how his mother, Ruma (Kishore Kumar's first wife) and Leena (Kishore Kumar's fourth wife) lived together under the same roof for over a decade. Instead of having any friction, they both shared a harmonious bond over meal, laughter and memories. 'They were all so broad-minded,' Amit said, speaking about the acceptance in the family 'I really love my parents, I miss them. They taught me these things.' Amit also spoke about having an unbiased and affectionate relationship with his father's second wife, Madhubala. 'I used to call her 'mummy' only,' he recalled. He shared a memory about how as a kid he had a habit of kicking in his sleep, prompting Madhubala to sleep between him and Kishore. She once jokingly told Kishore, 'Aapka ladka bahut laat maarta hai (Your son kicks a lot).' This dynamic of family despite the complexes seems quite rare but shows how the entire family inherited acceptance and were quite broad minded.
