Chiefs Urged To Trade For Enemy TE Ahead Of Kelce's Eventual Retirement

Chiefs Urged To Trade For Enemy TE Ahead Of Kelce's Eventual Retirement originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Kansas City Chiefs have a timer counting down the days they have left with tight end Travis Kelce. Months of retirement speculation bled into their playoff run and became a major talking point before and after Super Bowl LIX. Advertisement Kelce since provided his answer, informing the team he would be back for one more season before likely hanging up his cleats and pads for good and heading off into the entertainment-world sunset with sweetheart Taylor Swift. That brings plenty of mixed emotions. Chiefs Kingdom will miss seeing their beloved tight end on the field but he will leave the game with one of the most decorated resumés for a player at his position in NFL history. At the same time, Kansas City must consider their future. While Kelce has his sights set on an eventual retirement, franchise quarterback Patrick Mahomes is entering his prime years and has plenty left to give the Chiefs over the next decade. To some, that means the Chiefs would be wise to consider adding Kelce's replacement now before times get too desperate next offseason. Anthony Palacios of Last Word On Sports believes the Chiefs should cross division lines to identify their future No. 1 at the position and trade for Michael Mayer of the Las Vegas Raiders. Advertisement "Kelce is looking for vengeance, but he won't last for more than a year, so they need to start planning for the future. Mahomes does well bringing out the best in a target, and even though Mayer hasn't found his footing yet, he could change things around in his career with one of the most complete teams in the league," Palacios wrote. Part of Mayer's struggles have come as a result of an unclear role in his offense. Originally drafted to become a top weapon for the Raiders, they pivoted to Brock Bowers last offseason and reasonably so. A change of scenery could also benefit Mayer who was heralded as the best tight end by some analysts in the 2023 class. Andy Reid has a way of getting positive production out of all the pieces deployed in his offensive arsenal, so that guidance could play even more into the young player's hands. Convincing a hated division rival to make this deal would be a supreme obstacle. But the central point stands. While the Chiefs enjoy their final campaign with Kelce, they are best served examining what they need to maintain once he departs. Raiders Reportedly Have 'No Interest' in Trading Former Second-Round Pick

Raiders Reportedly Have 'No Interest' in Trading Former Second-Round Pick originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Las Vegas Raiders selected Brock Bowers with the No. 13 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. While he was not necessarily a need for the team, he was certainly a luxury, as the Raiders' rookie tight end was a First-Team All-Pro and a Pro Bowler in 2024. Advertisement Ultimately, however, his success was not enough to overcome a poor quarterback situation and the complete absence of a run game. The Silver and Black won just four games last year and needed to make several changes ahead of the 2025 season. New general manager John Spytek reportedly tested the waters on Michael Mayer's trade value earlier this offseason, as the third-year tight end was thought by some to be expendable after Bowers' rookie campaign. Las Vegas Raiders TE Michael Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images This sentiment was exacerbated by various reports linking Mayer to the Miami Dolphins after they traded away starting tight end Jonnu Smith on Monday. However, the Las Vegas Review-Journal's Vincent Bonsignore put a stop to these rumors. Advertisement "The @Raiders have no interest in trading Michael Mayer," Bonsignore wrote. Mayer has certainly got off to a rough start in his NFL career, but the 2023 second-round pick has plenty of untapped potential. With a strong play-caller in Chip Kelly, he should see an increase in production. Through two seasons, he has caught just 48 passes for 480 yards and two touchdowns, but new Raiders quarterback Geno Smith will be the best signal-caller he has played with in the NFL. Miami also traded for former Raiders and Giants tight end Darren Waller on Tuesday, filling their void in the starting lineup. This, combined with Bonsignore's report, paints an incredibly unlikely scenario where Mayer ends up in Miami. Pete Carroll: Michael Mayer had a great offseason with us

A lot has changed for the Raiders since 2023, but that was the year the club selected a talented tight end out of Notre Dame in Michael Mayer. He caught 27 passes for 304 yards with two touchdowns as a rookie, flashing his potential. Advertisement But then the Raiders brought in Brock Bowers at the same position in 2024, and he immediately became one of the league's top players, earning first-team All-Pro distinction after his record-setting rookie year. While Mayer was limited to 11 games in 2024, the new Raiders regime has seen a lot of good from the tight end during the spring. 'I thought Mike had a great offseason with us,' head coach Pete Carroll said in his press conference late last week. 'We started out going heart to heart and him [understanding] what we're all about, and he embraced it and took it as well as anybody could take the challenge of bringing it day in and day out. He had a great camp, and he was doing well before Brock got here, and the two of them just went head to head, just trying to make a play here and there and going back and forth. And they were just great contributors. 'It's a terrific position group for us. Ian Thomas coming in really, really livens it up as well. So, we have a very good position group right there and excited about what they're going to do, but I thought Michael had a great camp.' Advertisement Offensive coordinator Chip Kelly also noted earlier in the offseason program that Mayer had been 'outstanding,' adding, 'I checked — you can play with two tight ends in a game at the same time, and sometimes you can play with three tight ends they told me.' That could mean plenty more playing time for Mayer, who finished last season with 21 catches for 156 yards.

Raiders shopping former 2nd round TE Michael Mayer in trade

Currently the Raiders hold the third most draft capital in the NFL. New head coach Pete Carrol hopes to use it to build the current unit into a competitive team right away. But they are hoping to add to that capital by trading away some current assets they think perhaps could be put to better use elsewhere. One such piece is tight end Michael Mayer. According to a report by The Athletic, the Raiders spent some of their time at the combine this week shopping Mayer in trade, hoping another team will be open to parting with a draft for the former 35th overall pick. Two years ago the Raiders traded up to select Michael Mayer at the top of the second round. A year later, when the Raiders were set to select at 13, and with all the draft's top quarterbacks gone, they went with the best player on the board, taking Georgia tight end Brock Bowers. This suddently left Mayer as an afterthought. Mayer followed up a rookie season with a meager 27 catches for 304 yards with just 156 yards on 21 catches last season, including missing six games for 'personal reasons'. Bowers had a rookie season for the ages, setting all-time records for tight end receiving yards, rookie receptions, and franchise receptions. He was named an All Pro and was the first runner-up for Rookie of the Year honors as the only other rookie to receive a first place vote besides winner Jayden Daniels. While the Raiders could likely use Mayer as a number two tight end, he wasn't drafted to be in that role and they are hoping another team thinks he can realize his potential on their squad and the Raiders can possibly get a mid-round draft pick in return.
