Ice Cream Alley is back at Smorgasburg LA to cool you down this summer

If you're anything like us, the hazy, humid summer temperatures have started to get to you. Luckily, Smorgasburg LA has a great way to beat the heat. Usually, the popular open-air food market is home to favorites like Cena Vegan, Daddy's Chicken Shack, Black Sugar Ribs Co, and Baohaus. Now, it's ice cream's time to shine. Savory, umami, and salty food aside, ROW DTLA at Smorgasburg LA just became ice cream central. This popular food venue is in the midst of a yearly event for Angelenos who enjoy creamy frozen treats. Running now through August 31st, Smorgasburg LA is home to Ice Cream Alley. "Every year since we opened in 2016, Smorgasburg has celebrated summer by creating a special area of our market dedicated to sweet frozen treats," Zach Brooks, general manager of Smorgasburg LA, said in a press release. Initially, the event was a National Ice Cream Day event, but it was so popular that it was turned into a two-month-long summertime pop-up that runs through Labor Day Weekend. The lineup includes the food venues' full-time frozen treat vendors as well as special guests. You'll have to visit Ice Cream Alley in the next few weeks if you want to try some of the guest vendors, including 626 Hospitality Group, with its chef-driven soft serve; Lefty Gelateria, with its small-batch gelato from Michelin-awarded chef Suyoung Park; Pampas Heladas Argentinos, with its artisanal Argentinian Helados; and the wildly popular Mateo's Ice Cream & Fruit Bars. When visiting Ice Cream Alley, you'll still be able to enjoy sweet, frozen treats from some of your favorite resident vendors. Bernie's, known for its chef-driven granita shaved ice cream, will be available, as well as Moom Maam Thai Gelato and Sad Girl Creamery. More special events and guests will be announced as the summer goes on.

Since 2021, Tiago Penão, a local from the area, has been a rising star in Cascais' culinary scene. That was when he opened Kappo in the heart of the town, a name that translates to "cut and cook." Ambitious yet laid-back, it's a high-end Japanese restaurant that centres on the intimate connection between the chef and those seated at the counter. While you can choose à la carte, the ideal experience is to surrender to the omakase menu, where the chef takes you on an authentic journey to Japan with the finest ingredients. And it's not a cliché – each course is accompanied by a perfect blend of explanation and storytelling. Every dish is served in bespoke crockery, like a custom-made frame designed to surround a work of art. Although the Japanese tradition is woven throughout Kappo's concept – which has been such a success that it quickly led to a younger sibling, the Japanese tavern Izakaya, run by Tiago's older brother – the stories and experiences of the team who work there daily also shine through on the plate. For instance, Manu prepares a Venezuelan dessert that she used to share with her grandmother – a three-milk cake that's then charred with Japanese charcoal. At Christmas, they make rabanadas.
