Ray Thomas' horse racing tips: Saturday, July 5, 2025

Trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr have ambitions of a feature-race treble across three states on Saturday. At Rosehill Gardens, their classy import Welwal ($8) looks ready to win in the Listed $200,000 Winter Stakes (1400m). Then on Finals Day at Flemington, the Price-Kent stable has promising three-year-old filly Knobelas ($2.25 favourite) chasing a hat-trick of in the Silver Bowl Series Final (1600m) and two-year-old Job Done ($3.10) trying to maintain the perfect start to his race career in the TAB Next Generation Sprinters Final (1200m). Price and Kent also have chances in two of the stakes races at the Sunshine Coast – Grand Impact ($16) in the Listed $300,000 Glasshouse Handicap (1400m) and Hezashocka ($13) in the Listed $300,000 Caloundra Cup (2400m). • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. Meanwhile, there has been some significant betting moves for Ciaron Maher's boom filly She's An Artist ($1.60 favourite) for the Listed $175,000 Creswick Stakes (1400m) at Flemington, her stablemate Warnie ($2.90 favourite) for the Glasshouse Handicap at Sunshine Coast, and also at Rosehill Gardens for the Joe Pride-trained Cosmonova ($15) for the Foundation Female Member Handicap (1200m). She's An Artist, brilliant winner of her only two starts, opened at $1.80 but is into $1.60 after some big bets with Ladbrokes including $1000 at $1.80 twice, $2000 twice, $1000 4 times, $700 and $650 at $1.75, $1500 and $1300 three times at $1.70 and $1300 at $1.55. Warnie opened at $3.20 but has firmed into $2.80 to win the Glasshouse while Cosmonova's odds have been slashed at Rosehill from $26 to $15 as she attempts to protect her unbeaten record when third-up from a spell. • Caloundra Cup favourite out to show Caulfield Cup quality ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ TRACK CONDITIONS ROSEHILL GARDENS Weather: Cool, mostly sunny day and a forecast top temperature of 17c. Track: Heavy (8). Rail: 8m out from the 1000m to the winning post, 7m remainder. FLEMINGTON Weather: Cool, partly cloudy day with a forecast top temperature of 16c. Track: Soft (6). Rail: True. SUNSHINE COAST Weather: Mild, partly cloudy day with a forecast top temperature of 22c. Track: Soft (6). Rail: True. GAWLER Weather: Cool, cloudy day with the chance of showers and a forecast top temperature of 16c. Track: Soft (7). Rail: True. • Rosehill Inside Mail: 'He's ready to run his best race this preparation' ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ BE WARY Rosehill's track rating continues to improve and is bordering on a soft 7 after being a heavy 10 earlier in the week. The rail is out 8m from the 1000m to the winning post and it is expected jockeys will try to steer away from the inside. Flemington's rail is in the true position and the track rated a soft 6 with the chance of an upgrade. The track should race fairly. Sunshine Coast's soft 6 rating is likely to improve further but it is expected the better going will be away from the inside in the straight. • Tips from the big bookies for Saturday, July 5 ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ROSEHILL GARDENS TIPS BEST BET: Race 3 No.6 EXIT FEE was heavily backed into favouritism first-up in a Randwick Highway and he ran well without threatening for a half length second to the speedy Calico Miss. He had never previously won at the start of a campaign so his Randwick effort suggests he's in for a good winter preparation. Exit Fee will strip fitter for that run and goes back to Rosehill where he won a Highway over 1300m when last in work. Drawn to get the run of the race, he's won second-up previously, handles soft tracks and is ready to win. THE NEXT BEST: Race 10 No.5 KERGUELEN did not miss a top two finish in his first six starts, winning three, before going sharply in grade when he ran fourth at favourite to Accredited at Randwick last start. The Godolphin sprinter looked to have every chance but still stuck to his task and was beaten just over a length. Kerguelen is back in his right grade and is drawn to get the run of the race. VALUE BET: Race 8 No.13 COSMONOVA has shaped promisingly in two runs from a spell including her closing third to stablemate Accredited at Randwick two weeks ago. The Joe Pride-trained Cosmonova returns to Rosehill where she has won over the 1200m course and although drawn a little wide, she should be able to slide across and settle in the front half of the field with cover. Cosmonova is at her peak after recent racing, she is unbeaten in two previous attempts third-up from a spell, and the soft track conditions are perfect for her. She's terrific value around $15. THE WHISPER: Race 1 No.1 RAGING FORCE has been brilliant in both starts this winter campaign, romping home in the Red Crown at Muswellbrook then dominating from the front at Kensington. Talented two-year-old who is being readied for the spring carnival. If he is to take on the best of his age group next season, he should be able to put this field away. There's plenty of market confidence in the Peter Snowden-trained gelding who has firmed from $2.60 into $1.90. • ROSEHILL BEST BETS: Clinton Payne's race-by-race tips, analysis for Rosehill Gardens on Saturday ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ FLEMINGTON TIPS BEST BET: Race 6 No.5 SHE'S AN ARTIST has been a runaway winner at her only two starts – scoring by five lengths on debut at Bendigo then careering away from her rivals over the Flemington 1100m course last start. She ran 1m 02.66s to win last start and broke 33s for her final 600m. Punters are rallying for She's An Artist with Ladbrokes reporting a string of big bets including $1000 at $1.80 twice, $2000 twice, $1000 4 times, $700 and $650 at $1.75, $1500 and $1300 three times at $1.70 and $1300 at $1.55. She's An Artist looks a real talent and will maintain her unbeaten record. NEXT BEST: Race 4 No.9 KNOBELAS ran on for a close second on debut at Pakenham over 1400m then went out to 1600m and has impressed with successive wins at Pakenham and Sandown. She has led all the way and by margins of more than three lengths both times. This is her best test but Knobelas looks a very progressive filly. The one to beat. VALUE BET: Race 9 No.6 TERRESTAR may not win often but the Team Hawkes-trained mare has returned in good form with game seconds at Eagle Farm and Flemington. Although she hasn't won for 15 months, she has now been placed in her last five starts in succession. Terrestar finds herself in a winnable race and she is good value at near double figure odds. THE WHISPER: Race 8 No.10 OH TOO GOOD returned to her best form with a runaway win at Flemington in the Vobis Gold, putting a margin of more than three lengths on her chasing rivals led by Jimmy The Bear. The form has been franked with Jimmy The Bear winning easily last start. Oh Too Good is at her peak after three runs from a spell, she excels over the Flemington 1600m course, and just needs a touch of luck early from her awkward gate. • FLEMINGTON BEST BETS: Gilbert Jockey Tommy Berry excited by Welwal's hopes in the wet in Winter Stakes at Rosehill

Star jockey Tommy Berry is brimming with confidence Welwal's form upswing and a wet track can deliver a late season stakes success at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday. Berry and the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr -trained import narrowly missed out in the Listed Civic Stakes last start and will attempt to go one better in the Listed $200,000 Winter Stakes (1400m). It was the first time Berry had ridden Welwal under race conditions in the Civic Stakes and the performance left the gun hoop convinced the gelding is ready to win. Welwal only had a couple of runners behind him in the Royal Randwick test before surging home down the outside to finish a close second to Headley Grange. 'He was ready to run a big race and the stable knew that as well, they were very confident with his chances,' Berry said. 'They would have liked a bit more give in the ground to be a good thing but they will get that this weekend. 'I am surprised the market hasn't reacted to that this weekend because he is an ideal wet tracker and off the back off his last start, you would have thought he would be harder in the market but I am happy with the way he is going.' Welwal has been a drifter in early betting from $6 out to $7.50 with punters looking to land a plunge on Whinchat, which has been sensationally backed from $15 into $4.80 favouritism. Welwal was brought to Australia to target the Golden Eagle and spent his early years in Australia with Chris Waller before joining Price and Kent Jr last spring. The six-year-old boasts Group 3 wins in both hemispheres with his biggest win on Australian shores coming in last year's Heffernan Stakes at Caulfield on heavy ground. Headley Grange adds the Listed Civic Stakes to his impressive record, and it's a Randwick treble to Jason Collett! 🙌 @PrideRacing @aus_turf_club â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) June 21, 2025 • It was an uneventful start to this preparation for the imported talent but his Civic Stakes performance was a reminder of his ability. 'He is a better horse than this grade,' Berry said. 'I suppose he has lost his way a little bit since he has come over but the stable were confident heading into last start that he is has been getting back to that better form. 'He gave me that feeling in his trial so it didn't take much convincing to tell me he was going well. 'I think he would have gained a lot of confidence out of that the other day.' While Welwal is undoubtedly a class galloper, Berry will link up with perhaps the most exciting young horse in the program to start his day on Raging Force. The Peter Snowden -trained Raging Force has announced himself as a genuine spring carnival contender this preparation after backing up a dominant first-up victory at Muswellbrook with an eye-catching success at Randwick Kensington. That's a big win at Randwick to Raging Force, who makes it two wins in a row! ðŸ'° @TommyBerry21 @SnowdenRacing1 @aus_turf_club @Darby_Racing â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) June 25, 2025 The son of Cosmic Force is an even money favourite to bring up a winning hat-trick in the Thank You ATC Members 2YO Open (1100m). 'Raging Force is a lovely horse,' Berry said. 'He has always showed us quite a bit but it has just taken a while for the penny to drop. 'Every year you see one or two horses over the winter that catch your eye. 'Autumn Boy is one that won really well in Brisbane and this guy, what he did last start with the winkers on was quite impressive.' Raging Force has drawn in the inside in the opening event on the program. He has led the field up in both of his starts this preparation but Berry insists he doesn't necessarily need to lead. 'I reckon he will be better with a trail anyway and looks like he might get that. ' Blake Ryan 's horse (Just Awesome) that I rode on debut, he has plenty of speed and probably more than me. 'He is a horse that will take you right into the race as well. It is probably going to afford us the opportunity to be ridden with cover on the weekend and I am excited what he can bring.' â– â– â– â– â– Gate open to another win Well-bred gelding Gatekeeper was bred to be a star and gun jockey Tommy Berry reckons the Chris Waller-trained galloper could be ready to start delivering on his potential. Berry will have a strong hand for Waller at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday and will attempt to help Gatekeeper remain unbeaten in the The Agency Real Estate Benchmark 72 Handicap (1300m). Breeding powerhouse Coolmore are in the ownership of Gatekeeper and have been forced wait patiently to see the gelding produce on the track. The three-year-old is a son of US champion Justify out of Australian Group 1 winner Nakeeta Jane. Nakeeta Jane was a placegetter in the 2018 Group 1 Flight Stakes before returning in the autumn to claim her maiden major in the Surround Stakes. . @mcacajamez gets his first win in Australia for the year with Gatekeeper finding the gap and taking out the first at Canterbury! ðŸ'¥ @cwallerracing — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) January 17, 2025 • Shayne O'Cass's tips, analysis for Rosehill Gardens on Saturday Berry piloted Gatekeeper in his first public appearance last May when he finished sixth in a trial at Rosehill Gardens but it wasn't for another eight months until the well-bred talent was produced at the races. Gatekeeper proved to be worth the wait when doing his best work late to score in a 1250m event at Canterbury on January 17 this year. Berry has ridden Gatekeeper in trackwork since and expects a bold showing from the three-year-old first-up. 'He gives you a lovely feel,' Berry said. 'He works good at home and is one of those horses that has always taken a bit of time and Chris has given him that. 'He has been accepted a few times in different races and drawn poorly. 'They've waited for a good alley (barrier five) for him and he's got that on the weekend. 'He's got quality on his side.' Bookies rate Gatekeeper as a $4.80 favourite to make it two from two to start his career with first emergency Lunaite well supported from $8 into $5. Berry also has the rides on Sounds Unusual ($8), Useapin ($10) and Cigar Flick ($8.50) for Sydney's leading conditioner.

Mick Kent and Michael Kent Jr to test debut winner Job Done at Flemington

Job Done will give away size to most of his rivals but co-trainer Mick Price says the youngster's motor will take him a long way towards remaining unbeaten at Saturday's Flemington meeting. The two-year-old impressed with his easy debut win in a Seymour maiden on June 10 but will tackle the Flemington straight course for the first time in the Next Generations Sprinters Series Final (1200m). Price, who trains Job Done in partnership with Michael Kent Jr, said the son of Snitzel worked well at Cranbourne on Saturday morning as part of his preparation for his $150,000 target. 'He will turn up and run well at Flemington,' Price said. 'Ben Melham rode him in his gallop and he worked like a horse that needs a horse to follow. 'His first win was good and he's a small gelding with a big stride. 'He's got a motor and a good pedigree and I think he'll run well down the straight.' Job Done is a half-brother to New Zealand Group 2 winner Contessa Vanessa, who also won a Listed race over 2100m. Price said he expected Job Done to handle 1200m at Flemington. 'That's 1200m that race and we're assuming he has that proper stamina about him,' he said. Price and Kent Jr will also run emerging filly Knobelas in the $150,000 Silver Bowl Final (1600m) for three-year-olds. Knobelas was beaten on debut over 1400m at Pakenham on May 8 but has since posted comfortable wins over 1600m at Pakenham and Sandown. Price said the New Zealand-bred filly also worked well on Saturday morning despite saving her best for race day. 'She's not a great trackworker,' Price said. 'She's a better racehorse and she's had tie-forward surgery, which is probably why we hear her blow a bit more than normal but it doesn't worry her. 'She's gone from a maiden to win at Sandown and should continue to improve.'

Reserve Bank skyrockets in value as Jamie Melham claims back-to-back wins in The Goodwood

Gun colt Reserve Bank charged home to claim Saturday's $1m The Goodwood at Morphettville, notching a fourth win in Adelaide's premier sprint for astute trainer Mick Price. It saw star jockey Jamie Melham nailed another homecoming mission, settling off the pace aboard Reserve Bank ($5.50), before splitting the middle of the field at the 200m, on her way to a brilliant one-length win. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'He's a Group 1 winner now as a colt, isn't he? He's a beautiful, sound, big, strong and nice colt,' Price, who trains in partnership with Michael Kent Jr, said. 'I was a bit concerned in the run where he was, I did say to her (Jamie), 'he's a nice, flow along sort of horse, he doesn't like the mixed messages and don't drag him back'. 'I'm sure he was out the back, but thankfully they ran along and he was allowed to use his big stride late and he took off. 'I can only say he's a very good colt, and he's won a Group 1.' Group 1 glory secured a hat-trick of wins for Reserve Bank, a three-year-old son of Capitalist, who has now won five from nine starts. Melham admitted that the 1200m race threatened to go pear-shaped early, but it eventually mapped out perfectly. 'Nothing went to plan, he reared out the gates, missed the start, but I just got a dream run, I got a beautiful run in the end,' Melham said. 'Giga Kick was on our outside, I thought if I drag back now and get on his backside, he's going to be too sharp. 'We just rode for luck, the gaps came, I was just a passenger, Mick has this horse absolutely flying, it was a very impressive win.' Jamie Melham celebrates winning The Goodwood aboard Reserve Bank. Picture: Makoto Kaneko The win saw Melham defend her Goodwood crown, the hoop won last year's sprint aboard Benedetta. 'I thought, I can't leave Adelaide without getting another Group 1,' she said. 'It's a very special race to win, and nothing's like winning a race back home in Adelaide, my aunty is here, aunty Jan, my family are here – it's very special.' Local galloper Sir Sway ($61) ran the race of his life to finish second for trainers Sue and Jason Jaensch, while Everest-winning sprinter Giga Kick, a $2.05 favourite, was honest first-up, hitting the line strongly out wide for third.
