Senate sends bill axing foreign aid, public broadcast funds to House

The U.S. Senate early Thursday approved a bill to cut foreign aid and public broadcasting funds. File Photo by Mike Theiler/UPI | License Photo July 17 (UPI) -- The U.S. Senate early Thursday voted to rescind some $9 billion in federal funding for foreign aid and public broadcasting, two areas of the government that the Trump administration has long targeted for cuts. The senators voted 51-48 mostly along party lines to approve House Bill 4 with Republican Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska joining the Democrats in voting against it. The bill, which now goes to the House of Representatives, will cut about $8 billion from international aid programs and about $1.1 billion from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The bill passed at about 2:20 a.m. EDT Thursday. "President Trump promised to cut wasteful spending and root out misuse of taxpayer dollars," Sen. Jim Risch, R-Idaho, said on X prior to the vote. "Now, @SenateGOP and I are voting to make these cuts permanent. Promises made, promises kept." The vote comes as the Trump administration faces criticism from Democrats, and some Republicans, for having promised to reduce government spending but then last month passed a massive tax and spending cuts bill that is expected to add $3.3 trillion to the U.S. deficit, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Meanwhile, the Cato Institute states it could add nearly double that, as much as $6 trillion. The Corporation of Public Broadcasting, which funds local news and radio infrastructure, has been a target of the Trump administration for funding a small portion of the budgets of PBS and NPR, which he accuses of being biased. Murkowski chastised her fellow Republicans for attacking a service that informed Alaskans that same day that there was a magnitude 7.3 earthquake and a tsunami warning. "Some colleagues claim they are targeting 'radical leftist organizations' with these cuts, but in Alaska, these are simply organizations dedicated to their communities," she said on social media. "Their response to today's earthquake is a perfect example of the incredible public service these stations provide. They deliver local news, weather updates and, yes, emergency alerts that save human lives."

Rose Lavelle returns to U.S. soccer roster after six-month hiatus

Veteran midfielder Rose Lavelle (L) last played for the United States Women's National Team on Dec. 3 in The Hague, Netherlands. File Photo by Mike Theiler/UPI | License Photo June 18 (UPI) -- Rose Lavelle was one of 25 players named to the United States Women's National Team roster for three upcoming friendlies, ending a 6 1/2-month injury hiatus, coach Emma Hayes announced Wednesday. "We want to continue to improve our understanding of how we want to play and widen the player pool, and those are some of the key goals of this three-game window," Hayes said in a news release. "On this roster, we have players with a varied amount of experience, and my priority is to deepen the exposures required for international soccer. These are three challenging matches and as always, we want to win, but also to make sure we are ready for the next steps." The Americans will take on Ireland to start the friendly trio at 9 p.m. EDT June 26 in Commerce City, Colo. They will face Ireland again at 3 p.m. June 29 in Cincinnati, and will play Canada at 7:30 p.m. July 2 in Washington, D.C. Lavelle, 30, scored 24 goals in 110 international appearances. The veteran midfielder, who previously won a World Cup and gold and bronze Olympic medals, was out with an ankle injury. She last appeared in a 2-1 win over the Netherlands on Dec. 3 in The Hague. Fellow midfielder Croix Bethune, the 2024 National Women's Soccer League Rookie of the Year who led the league with 10 assists, is also set to return from a knee injury. She last played for the Americans since a 2-1 group-stage win over Australia at the 2024 Summer Olympics on July 31 in Marseille, France. The USA's latest roster features 24 players from the NWSL and Chelsea defender Naomi Girma. Nearly all of the other European-based players who are typically on the national team were not included because they are resting during the FIFA window. The roster, which features an average age of 24.5, will be among the most-inexperienced in the history of the U.S. women's team. Defenders Jordyn Bugg (18) and Gisele Thompson (19) and midfielders Olivia Moutrie (19) and Claire Hutton (19) are the youngest players on the roster. Bugg and fellow defenders Lilly Reale and Izzy Rodriguez and midfielder Sam Meza earned their first senior national team call-ups. The U.S. women's June 26 game will air on TBS, truTV and Max. The June 29 game will air on TNT, truTV and Max. The USA-Canada game will air on TNT, truTV and Max.O

Iranian asylum seekers charged with spying, targeting U.K. journalists

Three Iranian asylum-seekers are charged with violations of the United Kingdom's National Security Act for targeting journalists with Iran International, which is based in London. File Photo by Mike Theiler/UPI | License Photo May 17 (UPI) -- Three Iranian men were charged with National Security Act violations for targeting U.K.-based journalists with "serious violence" during a Saturday court appearance. Mostafa Sepahvand, 39, Farhad Javadi Manesh, 44, and Shapoor Qalehali Khani Noori, 55, of London were charged in the Westminster Magistrates Court in London, the BBC reported. Sepahvand also is charged with "surveillance, reconnaissance and open-source research" while planning to commit "serious violence against a person in the U.K." The trio are London residents who have sought asylum and were arrested on May 3 for "engaging in conduct likely to assist a foreign intelligence service" from Aug. 14 to Feb. 16, CNN reported. Iran's foreign intelligence service is the one they are accused of assisting by allegedly surveilling and targeting journalists for Iran International, which is an independent media outlet based in London. The three are Iranian citizens and entered the United Kingdom between 2016 and 2022. Sepahvand hid inside a lorry when he arrived in 2016, while the other two arrived in small boats. Each was granted temporary asylum shortly after arriving in the United Kingdom. None of the three entered pleas during Saturday's court hearing, and the three men have another court hearing scheduled on June 6 at the Old Bailey Central Criminal Court in London.
