Rose Lavelle returns to U.S. soccer roster after six-month hiatus

June 18 (UPI) -- Rose Lavelle was one of 25 players named to the United States Women's National Team roster for three upcoming friendlies, ending a 6 1/2-month injury hiatus, coach Emma Hayes announced Wednesday.
"We want to continue to improve our understanding of how we want to play and widen the player pool, and those are some of the key goals of this three-game window," Hayes said in a news release.
"On this roster, we have players with a varied amount of experience, and my priority is to deepen the exposures required for international soccer. These are three challenging matches and as always, we want to win, but also to make sure we are ready for the next steps."
The Americans will take on Ireland to start the friendly trio at 9 p.m. EDT June 26 in Commerce City, Colo. They will face Ireland again at 3 p.m. June 29 in Cincinnati, and will play Canada at 7:30 p.m. July 2 in Washington, D.C.
Lavelle, 30, scored 24 goals in 110 international appearances. The veteran midfielder, who previously won a World Cup and gold and bronze Olympic medals, was out with an ankle injury. She last appeared in a 2-1 win over the Netherlands on Dec. 3 in The Hague.
Fellow midfielder Croix Bethune, the 2024 National Women's Soccer League Rookie of the Year who led the league with 10 assists, is also set to return from a knee injury. She last played for the Americans since a 2-1 group-stage win over Australia at the 2024 Summer Olympics on July 31 in Marseille, France.
The USA's latest roster features 24 players from the NWSL and Chelsea defender Naomi Girma. Nearly all of the other European-based players who are typically on the national team were not included because they are resting during the FIFA window.
The roster, which features an average age of 24.5, will be among the most-inexperienced in the history of the U.S. women's team. Defenders Jordyn Bugg (18) and Gisele Thompson (19) and midfielders Olivia Moutrie (19) and Claire Hutton (19) are the youngest players on the roster.
Bugg and fellow defenders Lilly Reale and Izzy Rodriguez and midfielder Sam Meza earned their first senior national team call-ups.

'The word is scary, but the doctor tells me that she is under control. She will remain in the hospital and we don't know for how long,' Tomé said. Spain's first game is against Portugal on Thursday in Bern. It will also face Belgium and Italy in Group B. Stability after Rubiales scandal Bonmatí's setback aside, Spain had been enjoying some peace and stability now that the Luis Rubiales scandal is behind them. Spain is arriving for Euro 2025 just a few months after Rubiales was convicted of sexual assault for an unsolicited kiss on player Jenni Hermoso during the 2023 World Cup awards ceremony. The conviction helped end one of the worst chapters in the history of Spanish soccer. The kiss sparked outrage and marred the nation's celebrations of the team's first major title in women's soccer. It ignited an unprecedented crisis that left the Spanish federation and women's soccer in turmoil. Spanish society called for more support for women, and sports officials ultimately were forced to review outdated protocols and improve the conditions for the women's team that is among the main title favorites at Euro 2025. 'I remember when I used to come to play for the national team and I didn't enjoy it. I just wanted to go home, to be honest,' playmaker Bonmatí, a two-time Ballon d'Or winner , said a few days before falling ill. 'It was tough to play here. The situation wasn't good. But now everything is better, there is more stability for everyone and that benefits the group.' The crisis prompted by the kiss on Hermoso — who was not called up by Tomé for the Euro 2025 squad — helped expedite changes that players had been demanding for a long time, including by some who refused to play for the national team even before the World Cup. 'The conditions have changed a lot,' said Putellas , another two-time world player of the year. 'Especially in terms of travel, nutrition, training. Things have changed radically. Now we are enjoying conditions that are at the top level of the men's team. It's something that has taken a lot of effort and work by many people.' Putellas said it's clear that the structure provided for the women's team is much more professional now, including in areas such as marketing and communication. 'We are finally where we wanted to be for some time,' she said. 'Because we have pushed for it, and also because a lot of people have helped us. Now we are just ready to compete and enjoy it.' Rubiales was convicted in February and ordered to pay more than 10,000 euros ($11,700) in fines. He was prohibited from approaching Hermoso or communicating with her for a year. Prosecutors had asked for a prison sentence. Rubiales was acquitted of a charge of coercion for allegedly trying to make Hermoso downplay the kiss on the lips. Tomé left out Hermoso from the squad saying that 'there's a lot of competition in her position.' Spain established itself as one of the powerhouses in women's soccer by winning the World Cup and following it up by lifting the trophy of the inaugural Women's Nations League in 2024. It then just missed out on a medal by finishing fourth at the Paris Olympics, when it lost to Brazil in the semifinals and to Germany in the bronze-medal match. Spain still a favorite Spain has never reached a final at the European Championship. Its best result was a last-four appearance in 1997. It was eliminated in the quarterfinals at each of the last three Euros. Still, it's a team that includes Barcelona and Real Madrid stars — and they've been playing well. Canadian men upend 6th-ranked Austria in opener at FIBA 3x3 basketball World Cup

However, their lone victory was a big accomplishment, a 22-19 decision over sixth-ranked Austria in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The 17th-ranked Canadians also lost 22-20 to No. 11 China. Advertisement Canada, which secured one of three available World Cup spots on May 25 with a 21-12 handling of Rwanda to cap a 3-0 performance in Azerbaijan, is back at the World Cup seven years following its quarterfinal loss in Manila, Philippines. On June 12, 2018, the Netherlands scored four points in 80 seconds for an 18-16 victory in a 10-minute contest that included five lead changes. Canada held a 16-15 edge with 73 seconds remaining on the clock. In Tuesday's game against Austria, neither team held more than a two-point lead until Aaron Rhooms's two-point shot gave Canada an 11-8 advantage. Grant Audu's two-pointer made it a four-point match at 16-12 with 3:15 left in the 10-minute contest. Advertisement With Canada leading 19-14, Austria went on a five-point run to draw even, keyed by a couple of Matthias Linortner free throws. But Rhooms and Audu put the game out of reach over the final 90 seconds with a single point and two-pointer, respectively. The six-foot-four Audu, from Toronto, is in his first season with the team. His first major competition was the FIBA 3x3 AmeriCup last December in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where the Canadian program picked up its first-ever medal at the event, defeating Mexico and Dominican Republic for bronze. Jerome Desrosiers and Audu shared the Canadian lead with seven points apiece while Alex Johnson had four rebounds. The Canadians held several leads against China but found themselves playing catch-up in the second half of the contest. Back-and-forth contest When Canada did grab momentum, Dianliang Zhang was there to take it away. Advertisement The Canadians went up 13-12 with 3:28 to play when Xingrui Wu converted a two-point to give China the lead. Zhang then made it a two-point game 39 seconds later. The teams were tied 15-15 when Zhang made two foul shots with 1:56 remaining. Canada knotted matters a couple of more times on two-pointers by Desrosiers but ZhiChao Xiang scored the final points with two just 28 seconds from the final buzzer. Desrosiers had nine points to lead Canada along with a game-high seven rebounds. Zhang topped all players with 10 points and added four rebounds. Canada's squad also features Alex "Superman" Johnson, who committed to 3x3 full-time in 2021. Canada's men also missed out on qualifying for the 2021 Olympic tournament in Tokyo. The Canadians will complete pool play Thursday against France, the 2024 Olympic silver medallists, at 5:10 a.m. ET, and Puerto Rico (7 a.m.) which placed second at last year's AmeriCup.
