Justice Ministry hosts seminar on asylum, refugee protection

Sana'a – Saba: The Ministry of Justice and Human Rights on Wednesday organized a legal seminar on "Rules of Asylum and Legal Protection for Refugees," attended by 27 representatives from various government bodies, including the Presidency, Supreme Judicial Council, and key ministries. Ambassador Abdul-Ilah Hajar, Advisor to the President of the Supreme Political Council, highlighted the seminar's importance given the influx of African refugees into Yemen and the absence of a national asylum law, despite Yemen being a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention. He hoped the seminar's outcomes would help regulate refugee flows. Deputy Minister of Justice and Human Rights Judge Ibrahim Al-Shami, emphasized that the right to asylum is a fundamental human right rooted in faith and humanitarian principles. He urged the international community to support Yemen in managing refugee waves, improve refugee conditions, and build legislative capacities for asylum-related agencies. Judge Khaled al-Baghdadi, head of the Technical Office, noted that the refugee crisis is a pressing international issue heavily impacting Yemen. He stressed the need to assess whether a national asylum law would burden the state amidst ongoing aggression and blockade. Ambassador Dr. Ahmed Al-Emad, Dean of the Diplomatic Institute, affirmed Yemen's historical role as a transit and safe haven for refugees. The seminar included working papers on asylum concepts and legal frameworks, concluding with recommendations to strengthen Yemen's legislative system, including forming a committee to study existing laws and potentially drafting a new asylum law. It also called for continued training for relevant authorities and urged UNHCR and IOM to fulfill their commitments to refugee programs and durable solutions. HR ministry condemns Zionist attack on Yemeni ports

Sana'a - Saba: The Ministry of Justice and Human Rights on Friday condemned in the strongest terms the repeated attacks by the Zionist entity on vital Yemeni ports, resulting in a number of deaths and injuries. In a statement, the Ministry indicated that these Zionist attacks constitute a flagrant violation of Yemeni sovereignty and international law. The Ministry affirmed Yemen's legitimate right to support the Palestinian people, who are subjected to systematic genocide and inhumane violations, considering such support a moral, legal, and religious duty in light of the international community's silence. It also affirmed its full support for Yemen's right to defend itself and deter any external aggression, and its support for the political and military leadership's choices to take the necessary measures to safeguard national security and protect Yemeni interests. It stated that the escalation of Israeli crimes in the Gaza Strip, which have targeted civilians, children, and infrastructure, constitutes a war crime that requires immediate accountability. The Ministry called on the international community and the United Nations to assume their legal and moral responsibilities by pressuring the Israeli enemy to immediately halt its aggression on Gaza, lift the unjust blockade, and hold the perpetrators of violations accountable. It also issued an urgent appeal to international and regional organizations and the free people of the world to intensify material and moral support for the Palestinian people in Gaza, provide them with international protection, and support their steadfastness in the face of the Israeli military machine. The Ministry of Justice and Human Rights emphasized that the rights of peoples will remain above all considerations, and that Yemen will always stand in the trench of truth and justice alongside all the oppressed, based on its humanitarian principles and national constants.
