RM34.2 million for eight projects in Sandakan

Published on: Friday, July 11, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jul 11, 2025 By: Mardinah Jikur Text Size: Nga (right) and Vivian monitoring refurbishment of Taman Singapore Apartments. SANDAKAN: The Ministry of Local Government Development (KPKT) has allocated RM34.2 million for the implementation of eight public projects in Sandakan aimed at improving infrastructure and community wellbeing. Minister KPKT Nga Kor Ming said RM30 million from the total allocation had been granted to the Sabah Government to upgrade and construct a new waste management cell at the Labuk Solid Waste Disposal Site, the first of its kind in the district. Another RM1 million has been allocated for repainting works at Taman Singapore Apartments, with RM500,000 already utilised for the first four blocks under the Malaysian Housing Maintenance Fund (TPPM), and an additional RM500,000 approved for the remaining blocks. 'This initiative focuses on physical repairs and essential facility upgrades to ensure safer, cleaner and more comfortable living conditions in strata housing,' he said. The project is scheduled for completion by July 28. Nga also highlighted the successful restoration of the community hall at Jalan Singapore, a project previously abandoned for nearly two decades. Now fully upgraded at a cost of RM400,000, the facility has been transformed into Sabah's first pickleball court and is expected to host recreational and community activities. He made the announcement during a press conference held in conjunction with his Sentuhan Kasih KPKT tour to Sandakan on Thursday. Accompanying him were Sandakan MP Vivian Wong Shir Yee, Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) Secretary Irman Tajuddin Edy and Ministry representatives. The visit underscores the Unity Government's commitment to addressing the welfare and development needs of Sabahans. Nga also visited several local markets including Sim-Sim, Elopura, Kim Fung, and the General Market, where KPKT approved RM2 million in total for upgrading works, with RM500,000 allocated to each site. 'These upgrades include improvements to vendor stalls to ensure a cleaner and more comfortable trading environment,' he said. Additionally, RM400,000 was approved to construct a roof over the basketball court at Taman Indah Jaya, and another RM400,000 to upgrade the futsal court at PPR Harmoni, with both projects raised by Vivian Wong in Parliament. During the same visit, Nga toured the PR1MA Residensi Borneo Cove project, completed in May 2021. Built over 9.53 acres, the affordable housing development consists of 999 apartment units across three blocks and includes amenities such as a multipurpose hall, playground, surau, kindergarten, childcare centre and futsal court. Strategically located at Jalan Buli Sim-Sim, the development has become a popular housing choice for locals. Nga said the success of these initiatives reflects the effective cooperation between KPKT, local authorities and the State Government. 'This close collaboration ensures that every project is well-managed and maximises its benefit to the people,' he said. He stressed that the efforts align with KPKT's broader vision of enhancing community wellbeing and prosperity, and reaffirmed the ministry's readiness to continue working with the State Government. Nga also urged relevant agencies, including MPS, to ensure that all eight projects funded under this record allocation for Sandakan are executed efficiently and for the benefit of the people. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? The RM25.91 million project, funded under a RM30 million allocation from the Ministry of Local Government Development (KPKT), is expected to serve around 500,000 residents, addressing long-standing waste management issues in the district. Minister Nga Kor Ming said Sandakan currently has no official disposal site, and this project will be a catalyst for a more sustainable and efficient waste management system.
