SANDAKAN: The Ministry of Local Government Development (KPKT) has allocated RM34.2 million for the implementation of eight public projects in Sandakan aimed at improving infrastructure and community wellbeing. Minister KPKT Nga Kor Ming said RM30 million from the total allocation had been granted to the Sabah Government to upgrade and construct a new waste management cell at the Labuk Solid Waste Disposal Site, the first of its kind in the district. Another RM1 million has been allocated for repainting works at Taman Singapore Apartments, with RM500,000 already utilised for the first four blocks under the Malaysian Housing Maintenance Fund (TPPM), and an additional RM500,000 approved for the remaining blocks. 'This initiative focuses on physical repairs and essential facility upgrades to ensure safer, cleaner and more comfortable living conditions in strata housing,' he said. The project is scheduled for completion by July 28. Nga also highlighted the successful restoration of the community hall at Jalan Singapore, a project previously abandoned for nearly two decades. Now fully upgraded at a cost of RM400,000, the facility has been transformed into Sabah's first pickleball court and is expected to host recreational and community activities. He made the announcement during a press conference held in conjunction with his Sentuhan Kasih KPKT tour to Sandakan on Thursday. Accompanying him were Sandakan MP Vivian Wong Shir Yee, Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) Secretary Irman Tajuddin Edy and Ministry representatives. The visit underscores the Unity Government's commitment to addressing the welfare and development needs of Sabahans. Nga also visited several local markets including Sim-Sim, Elopura, Kim Fung, and the General Market, where KPKT approved RM2 million in total for upgrading works, with RM500,000 allocated to each site. 'These upgrades include improvements to vendor stalls to ensure a cleaner and more comfortable trading environment,' he said. Additionally, RM400,000 was approved to construct a roof over the basketball court at Taman Indah Jaya, and another RM400,000 to upgrade the futsal court at PPR Harmoni, with both projects raised by Vivian Wong in Parliament. During the same visit, Nga toured the PR1MA Residensi Borneo Cove project, completed in May 2021. Built over 9.53 acres, the affordable housing development consists of 999 apartment units across three blocks and includes amenities such as a multipurpose hall, playground, surau, kindergarten, childcare centre and futsal court. Strategically located at Jalan Buli Sim-Sim, the development has become a popular housing choice for locals. Nga said the success of these initiatives reflects the effective cooperation between KPKT, local authorities and the State Government. 'This close collaboration ensures that every project is well-managed and maximises its benefit to the people,' he said. He stressed that the efforts align with KPKT's broader vision of enhancing community wellbeing and prosperity, and reaffirmed the ministry's readiness to continue working with the State Government. Nga also urged relevant agencies, including MPS, to ensure that all eight projects funded under this record allocation for Sandakan are executed efficiently and for the benefit of the people. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Kelantan TRW Vow To Settle Outstanding Salaries Of Former Players, Coaches This Season

REGION - EAST > NEWS KOTA BHARU, July 15 (Bernama) -- Salary arrears involving nearly 20 former players and coaches of Kelantan Darul Naim (KDN) FC have been guaranteed to be resolved within this season. President of Kelantan The Real Warriors (Kelantan TRW), Tan Sri Annuar Musa, said the arrears only involved three months, namely February, March and April of this year. He said the club also appealed to be given space to negotiate with the former players and coaches involved to expedite the settlement of the outstanding salaries. bootstrap slideshow 'Don't worry, all debts will be paid. We only ask for a chance to negotiate — if there are those who urgently need the money, we will try to accommodate. However, we are offering a win-win situation in which they agree to a reduction in the payment. 'If they agree to a discount, we can settle it by August. But if they refuse, that is their right. Without any discount, we will settle the arrears -- which amount to about RM300,000 -- within this season,' he said at a press conference here today. Earlier, Annuar confirmed that he had accepted the offer to serve as president of Kelantan TRW Football Club with immediate effect. Bernama reported on Sunday that the Kelantan TRW management had been given until today to resolve the salary arrears involving nearly 20 players and coaches from last season. -- BERNAMA

Umrah package firm, director charged for ignoring tribunal's RM232,000 award to consumers

KOTA KINABALU: A company offering umrah packages and its director were charged in the magistrates' court here today for failing to comply with a decision by the Tribunal for Consumer Claims Malaysia to award claims amounting to RM232,526.80 to six people. The company, Emraz Travel & Tours Sdn Bhd, and its director, Datuk Zulkarnain Endut, 44, each face six charges under Section 117(1) of the Consumer Protection Act 1999, which carries a penalty of up to RM10,000, two years' imprisonment, or both, upon conviction. Zulkarnain, in his capacity as a director and on behalf of the company, pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Dzul Elmy Yunus after the charges were read out. According to the charge sheet, the company and Zulkarnain had allegedly committed the offences between July 2023 and January 2024 at the Sabah Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry in Jalan UMS, here, by failing to pay the awards ranging from RM24,666.80 to RM50,000 to six individuals, totalling RM232,526.80. The court fixed Sept 23 for pre-trial case management and allowed bail at RM1,000 for each charge, with a local surety. An additional condition was imposed requiring the accused to report to the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry's office in Putrajaya on the 17th of every month. Deputy public prosecutors from the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, Shafiq Mahadi and Md Syafique Md Helmie, prosecuted while the accused was represented by counsel Farah Nazriah Chun Lee @ Mohd Fadzlee Lee. Earlier, Farah informed the court that another director of the company, Datin Mazuin Mustafa, who is also Zulkarnain's wife, was supposed to be charged today but was unable to attend due to a high-risk pregnancy that prevented her from travelling to Sabah. Farah said her condition had been confirmed by Putrajaya Hospital on June 20, and she applied for the warrant of arrest against Mazuin to be revoked, which was not opposed by the prosecution. Meanwhile, Shafiq informed the court that according to a letter from the hospital, the accused's wife is currently 11 weeks pregnant. The prosecution requested that the next case management to be fixed within two months, with the same date also intended to ascertain the status of the accused's wife regarding when she would be fit to travel to Sabah. The court was also informed that Zulkarnain is facing similar charges in various states across Malaysia, including Sabah, Sarawak, and Peninsular Malaysia. On July 8 2023, Bernama quoted Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing as saying that the ministry had suspended the licence of Emraz Travel & Tours Sdn Bhd for six months, effective July 10, 2023 until Jan 9, 2024. Lembaga Tabung Haji Lembaga Tabung Haji had also suspended the licence of the same company on April 2 in the same year in a move to protect the welfare of prospective haj pilgrims following public complaints about their umrah services.

Illegal fertiliser repackaging op raking in RM400,000 monthly profits busted in Melaka

MELAKA: A company raking in monthly profits of up to RM400,000 has been exposed for running an illegal fertiliser repackaging operation from three rented bungalows in an upscale residential neighbourhood in Ayer Keroh here. The illicit activity came to light following a raid by the Melaka Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) under Ops Samar 5.0. Melaka KPDN director Dr Mohd Hazimin Jamaludin said the operation was uncovered after a week of public tip-offs and surveillance. "The bungalows were operating like small-scale factories, repackaging fertiliser purchased from other sources into smaller packets. "Two of the homes were also used as business offices and TikTok livestream studios for online sales,' he said on Tuesday (July 15). Dr Mohd Hazimin said the company was found to have violated two major regulations, the Supply Control Act 1961 and the Weights and Measures Act 1972. 'They've been operating for about a year without any official approval from KPDN's Supply Controller to deal in controlled items like fertiliser. "The company also lacked local council approval, retail and wholesale licences,' he said. Dr Mohd Hazimin said that under the Weights and Measures Act, the company was using uncertified weighing tools, raising concerns about inaccurate measurements for products sold through TikTok. He said his team discovered 4,165kg of fertiliser worth RM6,789 ready for repackaging and distribution nationwide during the raid. "The business model allowed the company to generate estimated monthly profits of RM400,000 with the help of 15 employees. Dr Mohd Hazimin noted that the company's decision to operate in a high-end residential area, rather than an industrial zone, was likely a strategic move to avoid detection. 'This is the first case of its kind in the state and possibly in the country. "It was also difficult for our enforcement team to even enter the area due to tight security to these homes are occupied by high-profile and elite individuals,' he added.
