Why ‘Superman' Has So Many Superheroes in It

Even before seeing it, it's clear there are many, many things that set James Gunn's Superman apart from other versions of the character. One is that, though this is very much a Superman movie, Superman interacts with a bunch of other superheroes. There's the Guy Gardner Green Lantern, Mister Terrific, Hawkgirl, and more. It was an interesting choice for Gunn to make, especially since this is our first real glimpse at the larger DC Universe he's helping to create. So we asked him about it. Speaking to io9 in Los Angeles this week, Gunn explained that other superheroes are in Superman as a way to illustrate just how powerful Superman is versus everyone else. 'We're creating a universe,' Gunn said. 'So I wanted Superman to be the most powerful metahuman on Earth, but I also didn't want him to be so strong that, like, Guy Gardner doesn't matter. I think that it was important to set up that he has contemporaries that are also pretty darn powerful.' Gunn explained that even gauging how powerful Superman would be was a bit of a discussion, especially because those powers have been so varied for so long. 'Throughout the years, there have been all sorts of different versions of Superman in his power levels,' Gunn said. 'From the beginning, when he was not able to fly, he'd shoot beams from his eyes. He could punch through walls at times in the '80s. In the '70s, he could punch a planet in half. The times in the '50s when he was able to make little versions of himself come out. Yes, there's a time when he would start having superpowers that people never knew [about], like making little tiny versions of himself. Clones of himself. You could do all sorts of weird things.' Spoiler alert, Gunn's Superman doesn't clone himself, nor does he make lots of tiny clones of himself, but he is very strong, very capable, and very tested by what happens in the movie. Thankfully, he's not the only superhero around. We'll have more from Gunn and the cast of Superman as we head towards the film's release July 11. Want more io9 news? SUPERMAN Post-Credits Scenes Reportedly Revealed and They Don't Set Up Any Future DCU Films — GeekTyrant

James Gunn's Superman just had its first official screening, and naturally, details are leaking online. With select press, influencers, and a few lucky DC fans in attendance, it was only a matter of time before post-credits details surfaced, and now they have. According to scooper @MyTimeToShineH, Superman includes two post-credits scenes, and true to Gunn's word, they're not focused on laying down the DCU's future roadmap. Instead, they feel more like small moments meant to add flavor rather than fuel speculation. 'Superman has two post credits scenes, one is Superman with Krypto on the moon looking at the Earth. 'The second is Superman and Mister Terrific looking at a giant crack in a massive building because the ground split in half during the finale and Supes says it's crooked and Terrific gets all annoyed and walks away and kicks a rock. It's a funny scene.' So yeah… no cameos, no cosmic threat teased, no ominous new villain lurking in the shadows. The first post credits scene with Superman and Krypto has actually been featured on a poster and a TV spot. The Mister Terrific bit sounds more like something to make audiences laugh. For some fans, that might be refreshing. But for others, especially those expecting Marvel-style teases, it could feel like a letdown. That's by design, though. Gunn has made it clear he's not trying to turn every movie into a springboard for the next. Instead, he's aiming for stories that can stand on their own while naturally overlapping through shared characters. Take Guy Gardner, for example. We'll meet him in Superman, then see more of his story in Peacemaker before he pops up again in Lanterns , alongside Hal Jordan and John Stewart. It's a slower, more character-focused way to build a universe. Gunn isn't chasing interconnected chaos. He's crafting a world with breathing room. While Superman's post-credits scenes might not be headline-worthy teases, they will offer heart, a bit of humor, and no rush to get somewhere else.

Superman star says his first comic book role in an X-Men movie was a "missed opportunity": "There was a lot they could have done with the character"

Superman star Edi Gathegi thinks his role in the new DC movie will "undo the wrongs" of the comic book character he played 14 years ago. He's set to play Mister Terrific in James Gunn's upcoming take on the Man of Steel, but over a decade ago he starred in 2011's X-Men: First Class. Gathegi played Darwin, a mutant capable of "reactive evolution," which enables him to evolve and adapt to any environment, but he didn't last very long in the franchise after Darwin met an untimely, not-comic-book-accurate end. "I think it is just a case of bad representation and missed opportunity. There was a lot that they could have done with that character, probably should have done with the character," Gathegi told Entertainment Weekly. "I was waiting to be brought back [after First Class] because, as you know, the character doesn't die," he continued. "The fact that he died in the first one isn't that big of a deal if he does what he does in the comics, which is come back. Every movie that came out and the character didn't come back, it solidified that it was a misrepresentation and a missed opportunity." However, Gathegi thinks that playing Mister Terrific in Superman "is kind of undoing the wrongs of Darwin. I know that as it stands right now, this isn't the only project that I'll be in." Only time will tell what those future projects may be, but Gunn recently said that he's working on a Superman follow-up movie – although it's not necessarily a "straight-up sequel." Gathegi stars alongside David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult in Superman, which is the first big-screen installment in Gunn's DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. Superman arrives in theaters on July 11. In the meantime, check out our guide to the other upcoming superhero movies on the way in 2025 and beyond.

‘Superman' trailer: David Corenswet's Man of Steel faces heat as Lois Lane questions his interference in a war

James Gunn, filmmaker and CEO of DC Studios, unveiled a new trailer of his much-hyped Superman film on Wednesday (May 14). Starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, the film promises to tell a one-of-a-kind live-action Superman story. The trailer begins with Clark Kent agreeing to Lois Lane's (Rachel Brosnahan) request to sit for an interview as Superman. The Son of Krypton abides, however, the interview soon turns into a grilling session as Lane questions him on several decisions he had just taken, including interfering in a war. While an annoyed Superman defends himself, stating that he stopped the war and prevented the deaths of countless, we cut to glimpses that show the superhero's actions being questioned by the media, the government, and the people he strives to protect. At one point, he is even arrested for his interference with the war. The trailer also shows Superman having to take on the evil Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), who seems to have an issue with how Superman has 'somehow become the focal point of the entire world's conversation.' The trailer ends with Pa Kent (Pruitt Taylor Vince) telling Clark, 'Your choices, your actions, that's what makes you who you are.' The trailer also glimpses at Isabela Merced's Hawkgirl, Anthony Carrigan's Matamorpho and Edi Gathegi's Mister Terrific, among others. The Hammer of Boravia and Ultraman too make appearances. The cast of the film also features Skyler Gisondo (as Jimmy Olsen), Sara Sampaio (Eve Teschmacher), Terence Rosemore (Otis), Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner) and María Gabriela de Faría (The Engineer). María Gabriela de Faría, Wendell Pierce, Alan Tudyk and Neva Howell also feature in the film. DC Studios heads Peter Safran and Gunn produce the film, which has a screenplay written by Gunn. The director is joined by his frequent collaborators for the technical side of things: director of photography Henry Braham, production designer Beth Mickle, costume designer Judianna Makovsky and composer John Murphy, along with editors William Hoy, Jason Ballantine and Craig Alpert. Superman takes flight in the US on July 11 and internationally on July 9.
