Parramatta Eels upset Brisbane Broncos thanks to Mitch Moses masterclass
The Eels have beaten the Broncos 22-20 on the back of a Mitchell Moses masterclass after Reece Walsh was denied a last-ditch match winner in a thriller at Suncorp Stadium. Moses was superb in his return with injury finishing with a linebreak assist and three try assists, while Origin winger Zac Lomax had a classy double and Josh Addo-Carr scored his 150th try and the match winner. Walsh had 147 run metres, a try assist and almost the match winning try, but he finished with three errors in a rocks and diamonds display. Xavier Willison was penalised for being third man in and making dangerous contact below the knee as the Eels took the lead through Mitchell Moses' boot. Addo-Carr was penalised for an escort to give Adam Reynolds the chance to lock up the scores. Walsh let a Moses bomb bounce to allow Sean Russell to produce a freak chip and chase try to give the Eels the Reynolds pounced on an intercept from Dean Hawkins' pass to run away and score a long-range try to square it up again. Reynolds turned provider to put Kobe Hetherington through a hole and he did the rest to charge 30 metres to score and give the Broncos the lead before the break. Walsh produced a brilliant sidestep to slice through and set up Billy Walters for a try as the Broncos took back the lead. Addo-Carr dived over in the corner for his milestone 150th try as the Eels took the lead yet again. Walsh looked to have pounced on a Joash Papalii blunder to score a late match winner, but the try was ruled out due to the Broncos fullback being off-side. The Eels held on for a deserved win in a seesawing epic to all but end Brisbane's top four hopes. MOSES STARS IN 'BITTERSWEET' MOMENT FOR EELS FANS Mitchell Moses proved why he's considered a top three halfback in the competition, starring for the Eels in his first game since Origin II. Moses has endured a wretched run with injury over the past two seasons and in 2025, has only played in seven games. It's no coincidence that Moses' poor luck with injury has correlated with the club's ordinary form but with the star half back on deck, Parramatta handed in one of their best performances of the season. Moses was in everything good the Eels did and his elite kicking game was evident for all to see. He finished with three try assists and suffocated the Broncos with his long and short kicking.'It's probably bittersweet for Parra fans as it's an insight into what they've missed,' Dan Ginnane said on Fox League. WALSH'S ACHILLES HEEL REARS UGLY HEAD At his best Reece Walsh is the one of the most dangerous attacking weapons in the NRL, but unless he cuts the errors out of his game he won't be the best. Walsh put in a rocks and diamonds display to nearly pull the Broncos out of the fire, but his penchant for errors came back to bite him and his team. Walsh had 147 run metres from 14 runs to go with three tackle busts, a linebreak and a try assist and nearly the match winning try. But the fact he was off-side blew his chance at scoring the game winner and he also had three errors, a missed tackle and gave away a crucial penalty. Walsh is an absolute freak of a player, but he needs to cut down on his mistakes if the Broncos want to go all the way to a drought-breaking premiership.

Playmakers are now a protected species. It's making rugby league boring
For years, I've been a loud voice when it comes to protecting playmakers in the NRL. It's been on two fronts, especially. Halves and playmakers getting smashed in the back after they've passed, and kick chasers diving at the legs of a player when they kick long. Now I think we've gone too far. In 2025, halfbacks can now play the game wearing a koala suit – they've officially become a protected species. Rugby league is built on the contest and competing as hard as you can. We can't take that out of the game just because that is naturally going to lead to some accidents. Kicking games have never been more important, but under the current rules, all the advantage is with a playmaker and an attacking kicker, to the point that there is no longer a reward for a good defensive set. Think about a good defensive set from 10 or 20 years ago. If a defensive team were on top, you would see a kicker having to sit 10-15 metres behind the advantage line, or even having to run sideways to get their kick away. That was the reward. Under the current rules, kickers are happy to sit up closer to the defensive line and hammer a long kick because they know defenders can't touch them. Mitchell Moses played out of his skin in Origin II last year, but we saw exactly this early in the game. A solid Queensland defensive set had them win each play-the-ball, and Moses was kicking from his own 40-metre line.

Eels youngster's setback opens door for Dylan Brown as Mitchell Moses set for return
The Parramatta Eels have been handed a major blow in the backend of the season with fullback Isaiah Iongi ruled out for up to four weeks, while they can expect chief halfback Mitchell Moses back. Eels fans have been building for the return of Moses who returned to the struggling side and managed to lift their performances dramatically. The side sitting second-last has lost three games in a row, but 22-year-old Iongi has been a standout star amid the form slump. Although Jason Ryles and the team have been delivered a huge blow with Iongi ruled out for up to four weeks due to a hand injury, according to . Iongi suffered the broken hand in the defeat to the Canberra Raiders last Saturday, but played close to 60 minutes with the injury. Iongi will now sit out for around a month as he recovers. Iongi was brought into the side with former captain Clint Gutherson moving on after reports he was going to lose his No.1 jersey to the youngster. In a tough year where Ryles has implemented change throughout the squad, Iongi has been a star with his work ethic a highlight at the back. While the Eels will be welcoming back their chief playmaker in Moses, they will be losing one of their best attacking weapons in the same week. Mitchell Moses set for Parramatta Eels return The Eels struggled without Moses in the side for the start of the year, before the halfback returned. He then injured himself ahead of State of Origin Game 2 for NSW and hasn't played since round 14. His expected return this weekend against the Broncos will boost the Eels who have shown promising signs in recent weeks, despite going down to the Dragons, Panthers and Raiders. His combination with Zax Lomax was a real highlight for Eels fans, before Moses' injury and the club will be hoping the duo can link up again on the right side. Dylan Brown faces potential Eels recall Iongi's injury paves the way for Dylan Brown to make a return to the XIII. The five-eighth was dropped from the side to play the Raiders with Ryles planning for the future with the side out of finals set to miss out on finals footy. Brown is on his way out the door to join the Knights at the end of the season. Ryles opted to play Brown at No.9 against the Panthers in week 19, before leaving him out against the Raiders last weekend. Questions were asked if Brown had played his final game for the club. Although Ryles shut down this suggestion last week. "No, he hasn't, I don't think, but I don't have a crystal ball," Ryles said on Friday. "The option to use him again is certainly there. If that does come up and we get an injury or two and he fits into that picture, then we'll do that, definitely." And it appears there is a chance he could slot into the halves, alongside Moses, with Joash Papalii the back-up fullback in the squad. Although Ryles could use Lomax in the No.1 jersey if he feels he wants a different line-up.
