Jesse Tyler Ferguson recalls facing the ‘loudest' criticism from gay viewers while he was on ‘Modern Family'
Jesse Tyler Ferguson is opening up about some criticism he received while playing a gay character on 'Modern Family' that hit particularly close to home. Ferguson shared that some of his 'loudest' critics came from the gay community itself, which is a pressure that he said he tends to feel frequently during Monday's episode of his podcast 'Dinner's on Me' with his guest, British actor Russell Tovey. 'One of the pressures I've always felt, specifically after being on a show like 'Modern Family,' where I'm portraying a gay man on a television show on (a) network that is as popular as it is, is that you receive criticism, as you do with anything you do,' he said, adding that 'the criticism that I think I heard at the loudest was always from the gay community.' Ferguson said he'd get criticism from some 'feeling as if maybe I didn't represent their idea of what a gay relationship was or a gay man was, which I always took with such a grain of salt because I'm representing one person, I'm in charge of this one character.' 'How can you be everything for everyone?' he asked. His played Mitchell Pritchett on the popular ABC sitcom, a gay lawyer married to Eric Stonestreet's Cameron Tucker. While he was portraying this one specific character, Ferguson said that Pritchett was, at the same time, 'a shade of who I was, so… if it's stereotypical, I'm basically playing myself, so I guess, guilty, guilty as charged.' Ferguson was nominated for five Emmys for his performance in the series, which aired from 2000 to 2009. Off screen, Ferguson is married to real-life lawyer Justin Mikita. The couple share two sons, Beckett and Sullivan, who were born in 2020 and 2022 respectively.

‘Modern Family' child star Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, who played Lily, comes out as bisexual
A former 'Modern Family' child star has opened up to fans about her sexuality. Aubrey Anderson-Emmons played Lily Tucker-Pritchett, the adopted daughter of a same-sex couple, on the 22-time Emmy-winning series. And on Sunday, she took to TikTok to announce that she is bisexual. In her post, the 18-year-old lip-syncs to audio of a scene from the hit ABC show. 'No, I'm not, I'm gay! I'm gay!' her character says, while her stepgrandmother, Sofia Vergara's Gloria Delgado-Pritchett, tells her 'You are Vietnamese.' Her father Mitchell Pritchett, played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson, responds, 'You're not gay, you're just confused ... Oh my God, what is wrong with me?' However, the reveal came in the layover text, in which Anderson-Emmons wrote, 'People keep joking so much abt [sic] me being gay when I literally am (I'm bi).' The caption said, 'happy pride month and to all a good night.' Many fans rejoiced in the comments, with one claiming she was 'the sassy princess raised by two queens,' referencing her parents in the show, Mitchell Pritchett and Cameron Tucker (Eric Stonestreet). Another simply joked that she was 'half gay, half Vietnamese,' based on the audio. 'Modern Family' has long been celebrated for its LGBTQ+ representation, with a specific highlight being the marriage between Mitch and Cam. Anderson-Emmons' character joined the show in its third season. During its 11-season run, the show earned nomination in the category of Outstanding Comedy Series at the GLAAD Media Awards for 10 consecutive years, winning in both 2011 and 2012. Since the series ended in April 2020, Anderson-Emmons has pivoted toward a music career. She recently released a single, 'Telephones and Traffic,' and teased another single, 'Don't Forget Me,' out on June 27.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson's dad questioned why he played 'so many gay parts'
Jesse Tyler Ferguson's dad "didn't understand" why he played "so many gay parts." The 49-year-old actor - who is best known for playing Mitchell Pritchett, who was married to Cam Tucker (Eric Stonestreet) in 'Modern Family' - welcomed his father's questioning because it led to a "whole other level" of their relationship because he was able to explain how important he felt to advocate for same-sex relationships on screen. Speaking on his 'Dinner's On Me' podcast, he said: "My family, they went through their own process with me being gay. "And my dad even asked me, while I was doing 'Modern Family', he's like, 'I just don't always understand why you have played so many gay parts.' "And it opened up a whole conversation between the two of us and started a whole other level of our relationship, because I had to sort of explain to him why it was important for me to play this role, because, socially, I wanted to be able to portray a gay man on television. I felt like it was gonna do wonderful things for the marriage equality movement, which it did." Jesse also noted the "tricky" balancing act of sharing personal anecdotes to connect with fans and not intruding too much on his family's personal lives. Speaking to his guest, actor Luke Macfarlane, he said: "I'm sure your parents were the same way. You know, their careers didn't beg for us to be so open with [themselves]. "And even I'm still learning how to open up in ways. I still have to keep parts of myself private. "We're expected in this industry to go on talk shows and talk about our personal life and to, you know, expose parts of ourselves for roles. And it's something that I think for my dad still a hard thing for him to understand. "If I go on a talk show and tell a story about the family, it's like, 'Why did you have to share that?' And I was like, 'Well, because it's a charming story about my life, and I'm just sharing a little bit of myself with people who wanna know something about me." The 'Cocaine Bear' actor - who is married to Justin Mikita - previously told of how he'd had to tell his parents he was gay at 17, 19, and 21 before they fully understood his sexuality. He told talk show host Oprah Winfrey in 2013: "The last was, he asked me if I had a girlfriend. I was like, 'Dad! I'm gay. Do we really have to go back to this every time?' "It was a process for him as well. It was sort of a coming-out process, and he had to figure out how to deal with having a son that wasn't the ideal son. He had this whole idea of what his son was gonna be, and he had to reconfigure his thinking."
