Mom Discovers 6-Year-Old Needs a 'Mental Health Day'—and That's Totally Normal
When I was growing up, my television consumption was strictly limited to VHS tapes of classic Disney movies (yes, I am in my mid-thirties). If I wasn't doing homework, the expectation was that I would be engaged in an activity: reading, coloring, or playing pretend. In other words, for most of my childhood, I was in 'on' mode. Looking back, I love that my parents were so dedicated to nurturing my creativity and imagination. But honestly, it was also exhausting. So I related to a parent who recently posted on Reddit asking other parents if 6-year-old kids ever need 'mental health days.' The short answer to her question, in my opinion, is yes. There might be a misconception among some parents that little kids—with their near boundless energy that keeps their parents up at night and at the park all day—don't get tired and don't need breaks. However, as the OP discovered, toddlers and elementary school-age kids might seem like gremlins, but they are just as human as the rest of us, and they need rest. The OP writes in the Reddit post that she knew her son needed a down day because he's usually excited to head to preschool, but one day he was 'really fighting to not go." 'He's said he's sick, that he doesn't feel good, and then cried because he didn't want to leave me,' she continues. 'I don't think he's sick, but he's definitely 'off.' He eventually agreed to go but still seemed really out of it and not present.' Eventually, she agreed to let him stay home 'under sick protocol,' which means, 'in bed mostly sleeping, maybe a movie or two [but] no video games, no iPad, just resting.' 'I'm just curious if anyone else's little ones have ever just seemed off like this and if I did the right thing in letting him stay home,' she goes on to ask. One other lesson I learned from my parents' strict rules about the sedentary consumption of entertainment is that the most important thing a person can be is productive. For me as a kid, that productivity was reading a book, producing a piece of, admittedly rudimentary, artwork, or going for a walk (i.e., exercising) with my dad. As an adult, I am still stuck on productivity—the idea that people always need to be doing something—as a measure of my worth and value. It wasn't until I became a parent myself that I started to understand how truly difficult that mindset can be. Like the mom from the Reddit post, I discovered that my kid needs days, frankly, to sit around and do nothing. I often catch myself asking her if she wants to paint or blow bubbles in the backyard or some other activity, when all she wants to do is recharge. That might mean hanging out in the living room while watching her current favorite movie, Moana 2. Other times, she enjoys just lying under the big, fluffy comforter in my bed after school. As one commenter on Reddit points out, little kids need breaks from the 'nonstop' activities of school and camps, or they might 'just [need] a break from the rushing around of getting out the door.' Another commenter who made a great point writes, 'You do also have to consider how much work and mental stress kids are under. 6 is either kindergarten or first grade so there's the start of real work everyday. We think 'Oh isn't it just so much fun,' but it's a lot of work to be 'on' even a few days a week.' In the end, I'll always appreciate how much my own parents pushed me to stay active, and I understand their reasoning, but balance is key. When your kid needs to rest, the most productive thing you can let them do is nothing. Read the original article on Parents
