Goldman Sachs Weighs In on Tesla Stock Amid New SUV Reveal
Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) stock has been trending sideways lately, as investors weigh the company's longer-term delivery prospects against near-term uncertainties. However, a newly unveiled model in China may provide a modest boost to sentiment – though it's not the affordable compact many were expecting. After months of teasing a more affordable, compact vehicle, Tesla instead revealed a larger version of the Model Y, dubbed the Model YL. Shared via Weibo on Wednesday along with two images, the new variant is roughly seven inches longer and up to two inches taller than the standard Model Y, though still smaller than the Model X. According to China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Model YL is expected to launch in China this fall and will feature six seats. Goldman Sachs analyst Mark Delaney, ranked among the top 3% of Wall Street stock experts, views the Model YL as an 'incremental positive' that could help Tesla strengthen its foothold in the SUV segment – not just in China, but eventually in the U.S. and Europe as well. A central debate among investors has been how much the upcoming Tesla models in the back half of 2025 will drive meaningful growth. Delaney believes the YL is 'more differentiated' than many had expected, particularly given subdued expectations set during the Q1 earnings call. Rather than a cost-reduced, scaled-down Model Y, Tesla delivered something targeting the three-row SUV market – a surprising move that could open new demand channels. Delaney still expects a lower-cost Model Y or Model 3 variant to be introduced later this year, aligning with prior management hints. Tesla hasn't revealed the planned price for the Model YL, but according to media reports, the average selling price is expected to be around 400,000 RMB (approximately $56,000). For context, the Model Y starts at about 264,000 RMB (roughly $37,000) in China and around $45,000 in the U.S. The Model X, by comparison, starts at approximately $90,000 in the U. S. It's still unclear what features the Model YL will include at this price point – such as whether it will come with FSD, as Tesla initially offered with the refreshed Model Y in the U.S. – as well as its driving range or whether the price estimate is final. For comparison, Li Auto's L8 starts at 322,000 RMB and has averaged monthly sales of five to six thousand units over the past year. The L9, priced similarly at 410,000 RMB, sees comparable sales. In the U.S., entry prices for the Toyota Highlander and Ford Explorer are both around $40,000. Is Tesla stock worth buying right now? According to Delaney, not quite. The Goldman Sachs analyst maintains a Neutral rating on TSLA with a $285 price target – about 11% below current levels. Of the 34 analysts who've weighed in over the past 3 months, the Street remains divided: 13 call it a Buy, 13 a Hold, and 8 say Sell. The average price target of $298.97 implies a 9% downside from current levels. Tesla's New Model Y L Brings More Space and More Power - But Only for China
The upcoming Tesla Model Y L is a longer, six-seat version of the standard Model Y. While the new variant hasn't gone on sale yet, Tesla has applied for a sales license with the country's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. That filing revealed full details about the new model, including its dimensions, power output, and three-row layout. For now, though, it's only confirmed for the Chinese market. Related: Tesla Model Y Aiming To Become A True Luxury Car This Year This isn't just a standard Model Y with a third row squeezed in. Tesla stretched the wheelbase by 5.9 inches to make room for a full set of second-row captain's chairs and a third row behind them. That brings the total length to 195.9 inches, which puts it just 4 inches shy of the full-size Model X. The roofline is also slightly taller, and the whole thing gains about 212 pounds, tipping the scales at just over 4,600 pounds. It's not just bigger; it's also more powerful. The Model Y L runs a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup, with 456 hp in total – about 80 more hp than the current dual-motor version. The biggest visual giveaway, however, is its new triple Y badge at the back. While Tesla hasn't shared any acceleration figures, the documents confirm a slightly pedestrian 125 mph top speed. China has been Tesla's strongest market for the Model Y. In 2024, the company sold over 480,000 units there, making the standard Model Y the best-selling car in the country. Nearly three-quarters of Tesla's Chinese sales came from that one model alone. But things have cooled off a bit. Since the refreshed Juniper version launched in early 2025, Model Y sales in China have dropped more than 17 percent year over year. And with local rivals like Xpeng, Deepal, and Zeekr heating up the competition, Tesla needed something new to hold attention. That's where the Model Y L comes in. Chinese buyers tend to favor long-wheelbase cars - it's a common trend, even with sedans - so adding more room and a third row could help Tesla stand out in a crowded EV space. There's no official word on whether the Model Y L will be offered outside of China. Still, it wouldn't be surprising if Tesla eventually rolled out something similar elsewhere. Three-row SUVs are always in demand in North America and Europe, but most options are either huge or expensive, often both. A stretched version of the Model Y could hit a sweet spot. It's cheaper and more efficient than a Model X, while still offering more flexibility for families or fleet buyers. But considering how many Chinese-exclusive cars never find their way across the pond, we wouldn't get our hopes up just yet. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

‘Don't Make a Move Yet,' Analysts Maintain a Hold on Tesla Stock (TSLA) Ahead of Q2 Results
Tesla (TSLA) received Hold ratings from a couple of Wall Street analysts, as they weigh the company's fundamentals against its long-term potential. While the company's new model launches offer upside, analysts remain cautious about margin pressure and a softer volume outlook. Make smarter investment decisions with TipRanks' Smart Investor Picks, delivered to your inbox every week. Investors will be closely watching for updates during Tesla's Q2 earnings call, scheduled for release on July 23. Barclays Analyst Warns on TSLA's Near-Term Outlook Barclays analyst Dan Levy reiterated a Hold rating with a $275 price target, citing concerns over weakening core performance. Levy noted that while Tesla's Q2 auto margins (excluding credits) may improve sequentially, they remain below historical levels. Also, he forecasts a 10% decline in vehicle volume for 2025. Moreover, Levy noted that earnings estimates for 2026 have fallen sharply, from over $3.20 to just $1.84. He warned that weak margins or negative commentary could hurt TSLA stock, though the upcoming earnings call might offer a boost if CEO Elon Musk shares updates on Tesla's robotaxi and autonomous vehicle plans. Levy also said the company's low-cost model may be delayed to late 2025, which could be seen as a setback. Goldman Sachs Sees New Model Y Boosting Tesla's Reach Similarly, Goldman Sachs analyst Mark Delaney maintained a Hold rating with a $285 price target, focusing on Tesla's product roadmap. Delaney said TSLA's newly announced Model Y L, a new variant of the Model Y, could help it compete better in the three-row SUV market. Tesla plans to launch the Y L in China this fall, and the analyst sees this as a small positive for the company. Delaney added that investors did not expect big changes in Tesla's 2025 models. But the Model Y L stands out more and could help the company reach more customers and boost sales. Is TSLA Stock a Buy? Turning to Wall Street, TSLA stock has a Hold consensus rating based on 13 Buys, 13 Holds, and eight Sells assigned in the last three months. At $298.97, the average Tesla price target implies a 6.21% downside potential. The stock has declined 24.2% over the past six months.

Tesla Model Y LWB With Three Rows Leaked; Here's What Else It Offers
Tesla Model Y has just been launched in the Indian market. While India is busy in Juniper's welcome, the world is preparing to see the first glimpse of a new version of the Tesla Model Y with a longer wheelbase and six seats. Although the official entry of the model is still away, some leaked information about the car has shed light on quite a few details. The details of the new model have been sourced from documents filed within China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). The new long-wheelbase iteration of the electric car is dubbed the Model Y L with three rows of seating. Along with more space and extra seats, this iteration will also bring more power. Diving into details, the new iteration of the car will have six seats, likely captain seats. To accommodate it, the car now has a length of 4,976 mm, which is 186 mm longer than the standard Model Y. Along with it, the height has increased by 44 mm. Since it's the long-wheelbase version, Tesla has extended the wheelbase to 3,040mm, or 150mm longer than the current five-seat Model Y. Along with the added length, the new Y L gets a few changes in aesthetics with a new design for the wheels, an updated spoiler, and new seats. Chances are, the car will likely get new paint scheme options as well. Based on the leaked documents, the Tesla Model Y L will also come with more power compared to the five-seat version. It will have an output of 455 hp, which is more than 443 hp on the five-seat version. This increased grunt might come in handy to handle the extra weight. Along with it, there are chances that there will be another seven-seat version of the car on the market. However, the launch timeline of both models is still unclear.
