This is how Qatar escaped Iran's missile strike on US base and later negotiated Iran-Israel truce

The fragments of an Iranian missile intercepted over Qatar, as it lies on a pavement near a fence on June 23. New Delhi: Iran launched a calculated missile attack on US' Al Udeid Air Base near Doha in Qatar on June 23 in retaliation of America's dropping of bunker buster bombs on its three nuclear sites. This was an audacious attack amid the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict. What exactly happened that evening? Now, a CNN report says that at the time of the Iranian attack, Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and top national security officials had been reportedly in a high-level meeting to discuss regional de-escalation efforts. 'It was a complete surprise,' said Majed Al-Ansari, spokesperson for Qatar's foreign ministry adding that the ground trembled from intercepts near the prime minister's residence as Qatar's air defense systems started intercepting the missiles. Was Qatar informed? It was tacitly understood and accepted that Iran might attack any of the American military bases in Gulf countries, hence they were on high alert. But it was not expected that that Iran would strike Qatar, long considered a neutral broker in the region. The impact was felt as far away as Bahrain and Kuwait where roads were closed and shelters were opened up while in the UAE, concerned residents scrambled to change travel plans. American forces evacuated Al Udeid Base, home to over 10,000 U.S. personnel. How did Qatar dodge those missiles? Thanks to Qatar's military radar that started picking up signals of missile activity in the early afternoon and at around 7 PM (local time), 19 missiles were heading for Al Udeid. Qatar quickly gathered 300 troops and activated Patriot missile batteries at two separate sites. Seven missiles were intercepted above the Persian Gulf, 11 over Doha, and one landed harmlessly in an uninhabited part of the air base. How much damage was reported? It is worth noting that Iran had informed the USA of the attack but Qatar was not informed. Meanwhile, Iran's foreign ministry claimed that the strike wasn't intended to harm the residents of Qatari or its interests. Following the missile attack, U.S. President Donald Trump reached out to Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani with a proposal, Israel was prepared to observe a ceasefire, and he urged Qatar to use its diplomatic channels to engage Iran.

EAM Jaishankar speaks to Qatar PM Al Thani, discusses bilateral agenda

External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar spoke to the Prime Minister of Qatar, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, on Thursday and discussed the bilateral agenda between the two nations. EAM Jaishankar, in a telephonic conversation with Prime Minister Al Thani, appreciated his assessment of the regional situation. EAM wrote on X, "A warm call with PM & FM @MBA_AlThani_ of Qatar. Appreciated his assessment of the regional situation. Discussed our bilateral agenda." Qatar's Prime Minister, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, played a key role in securing Iran's approval for the US-proposed ceasefire in the conflict with Israel, with Al Thani obtaining Tehran's agreement during a phone call with Iranian officials, as reported by Reuters, quoting an official briefed on the negotiation. Al Thani's conversation followed Trump's communication with Qatar's Emir, in which the US President informed him that Israel had accepted the ceasefire proposal and requested Doha's assistance in convincing Tehran to agree to the deal, as reported by Reuters. However, moments after the announcement, the Israeli Air Force (IAF) carried out a limited strike on an Iranian radar installation north of Tehran, following which Iran launched two ballistic missiles at Israel, as reported by The Times of Israel. Trump expressed his strong disapproval of Israel and Iran "violating the ceasefire", he announced, and said that the two countries have been fighting "so long and so hard that they don't know what the f*** they're doing." Shortly after, the Israeli Prime Minister's Office in a statement noted that after a conversation between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel has "refrained" from further attacks on Iran. The conflict between Iran and Israel began on June 13 when Israel launched a large-scale airstrike targeting Iranian military and nuclear facilities under "Operation Rising Lion". Iran responded by launching "Operation True Promise 3", a campaign involving missile and drone attacks against Israel's infrastructure. Ceasefire talks between Hamas, 'Israel' could resume within days: Qatar PM

Qatar's Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said on Monday that Doha continues to work with Egypt to broker a ceasefire in Gaza, expressing hope that indirect negotiations between 'Israel' and Hamas could resume in the coming days. Speaking at a press conference in Doha alongside Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, Sheikh Mohammed stressed that ongoing efforts aim to stop the war and violence against civilians in Gaza. 'We hope there will be an opportunity within the next two days for indirect talks between Hamas and Israel to reach a ceasefire agreement,' he said. The Qatari premier criticized what he described as 'irresponsible Israeli behavior' and urged 'Israel' not to exploit the current lull in its conflict with Iran to intensify attacks on Gaza. He also called on Hamas to release all captives to facilitate a ceasefire deal. Sheikh Mohammed added that Doha has been engaged in 'intensive diplomatic efforts with our regional partners' and reiterated Qatar's support for the American ceasefire framework. 'We had achieved a lot in the past, but the 'Israeli' escalation against Iran disrupted the process. However, we are continuing our efforts, inshallah,' he said.

Qatar-Iran ties scarred but should recover after missile salvo at US base, Qatari PM says

Qatar's prime minister said on Tuesday relations with Iran have been scarred by an Iranian missile volley at a U.S. airbase in the Gulf Arab state, but that he hoped ties would eventually "come back to normal". Iran responded to U.S. participation in Israel's air war against Iran by firing missiles on Monday at the Al Ubeid air base, but no one was hurt after Tehran gave advance warning, and a ceasefire was announced hours later by Washington. Qatar, situated just across the Gulf from Iran, has often acted as a mediator in regional conflicts, including between Iran and the United States and between Israel and Hamas in the continuing Gaza war. 'What happened will definitely have its scar on the relationship (with Iran), but I hope by the time everyone learns the lesson that this kind of neighbourhood relationship should not be violated and should not be undermined,' Qatar's prime minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, told a press conference with his Lebanese counterpart in Doha. 'The partnership between Qatar and the U.S. is just growing stronger… and I hope the good relationship with Iran comes back to normal as soon as possible,' he said. Al Thaniadded that Qatar had liaised with Iran at Washington's request to help facilitate the ceasefire. 'We hope the ceasefire will continue as agreed upon, and we urge both the U.S. and Iran to return to the negotiating table with the aim of reaching a comprehensive diplomatic solution, something that Qatar has consistently sought,' he said. He added that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed regret in a phone call with Qatar's ruling Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani that Tehran's target in retaliating for U.S. airstrikes was a military base in Qatar.
