YaPEIM allocates RM4m for 50 homes for underprivileged
KEPALA BATAS: The Yayasan Pembangunan Ekonomi Islam Malaysia (YaPEIM) has set a target to construct 50 homes this year for the underprivileged, with an allocation of RM4 million under its Sinar Lestari YaPEIM initiative. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said each housing unit, costing approximately RM80,000, will be built in collaboration with strategic partners for the B40 group and recipients listed under the e-Kasih database, to provide them with safer and more comfortable homes. 'The Sinar Lestari YaPEIM, launched in 2020, has so far allocated RM13.5 million for 293 new construction and renovation projects nationwide as of June this year,' he added. 'A total of 167 renovation projects and 126 new construction projects have been implemented, with 225 projects completed while 68 are still in progress. Specifically, in Penang, YaPEIM has undertaken nine projects, comprising five new builds and four renovations, amounting to RM460,000,' he said. He said this after officiating the Sinar Lestari YaPEIM programme in Penaga, where three families received assistance to build new homes during the event. Mohd Na'im said the assistance provided under the initiative was not merely about building comfortable homes but also symbolised the MADANI Government's commitment to fostering a caring society and ensuring that no underprivileged group is left behind. Meanwhile, a recipient of the new house, Tahir Suhid, 55, expressed his family's gratitude and joy for receiving the housing aid. He shared that for more than 15 years, they had been renting a home on Jalan Pasir Gebu here, as they could not afford to own one. Tahir, who was previously a fisherman, has not gone to sea for over two years and now helps his wife, Norlia Aziz, 45, who runs a small business. He said he first purchased a plot of land through an installment plan before applying for YaPEIM's assistance to build a house on his own land. 'Our family is truly grateful to YaPEIM for this support. This house means a great deal to me, my wife, and our five children, aged between six and 25. Three of them are still in school,' he said. - Bernama

JAIS Calling Organisers Of e-Hati To Record Statement - Mohd Na'im
KEPALA BATAS, July 23 (Bernama) -- The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) is currently in the process of summoning the organisers of the e-Hati marriage motivation programme to record statements to assist in investigations into allegations that it contains obscene elements and dubious beliefs. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said JAIS has summoned several witnesses in relation to the case so far to assist in investigations being conducted under syariah crimes. "The investigation into the case is still ongoing, so we are waiting for the results of the investigation and the investigation under the Penal Code which we have handed over to the police, but JAIS is also cooperating with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to see the progress (of the investigation). "JAIS is also conducting an investigation under syariah crimes and JAIS is also calling witnesses to provide statements to assist in the investigation of the case," he said. He told reporters after officiating the Sinar Lestari Programme of the Islamic Economic Development Foundation of Malaysia (YAPEIM) in Penaga here which saw three heads of families received assistance to build their own new houses at the event. Therefore, Mohd Na'im said his party is waiting for a complete report from JAIS regarding the programme. The public was shocked by the revelation of a social media user regarding the e-Hati motivational programme run by a married couple which is said to contain lewd elements and suspicious beliefs. Following this, a married couple including the founder of the company known as eHati along with four other individuals were remanded for three days to assist in investigations into the organisation of the motivational programme. Earlier, YAPEIM together with strategic partners helped build houses involving an allocation of RM240,000 for three beneficiaries in the B40 group from the eKasih list in Penang.

Many pilgrims decline Haj subsidy as awareness grows
KUALA LUMPUR: The number of Malaysian pilgrims opting out of Haj subsidies has risen over the past two years, reflecting increased awareness of financial readiness as a key requirement for the pilgrimage. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar revealed the trend in Parliament today, noting a decline in subsidy uptake among B40 and M40 groups. 'Tabung Haji (TH) is making efforts to explain to Muslims the link between Haj and the condition of affordability. 'Beginning in 2022, the subsidies provided by TH to B40 and M40 pilgrims have been decreasing... this is an effort to educate Muslims on the obligation of Haj,' he said. A total of 396 pilgrims declined subsidies in 2023, followed by 263 in 2024. Mohd Na'im attributed this shift to a growing understanding that performing Haj should only be undertaken when financially capable. The trend has also benefited TH's financial health, with dividend payouts rising to 3.25 per cent last year. On Haj costs and quotas, Mohd Na'im confirmed no price increase for Muassasah pilgrims this year, with fees remaining at RM33,300 per person. Malaysia's official Haj quota, set at 31,600 annually by Saudi Arabia, has been fully utilised from 2020 to 2025. However, in 2022, pandemic restrictions reduced the quota to 14,306 pilgrims. - Bernama

Mohd Na'im calls for ulama to guide government on Muslim affairs
PUTRAJAYA: Ulama have been urged to continue playing an active role by offering views, suggestions, and criticisms to the government on matters concerning Muslim interests in Malaysia. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar stressed the importance of strengthening ties between religious scholars and national leaders to ensure the country progresses on the right path. 'If there are issues that require advice or criticism, we (the government) are open to it,' he said after officiating the National Umara'-Ulama' Pondok Dialogue (UMRAN) 2025 at the Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Mosque. The three-day event, themed 'Fiqh Mizan in Driving the MADANI Ummah', gathered 200 pondok teachers and scholars nationwide. Mohd Na'im highlighted that the dialogue aligns with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's vision for pondok ulama to contribute actively to national policies. He added that his ministry plans to hold UMRAN regularly, providing a platform for scholars to exchange ideas and strengthen networking among pondok institutions. 'This meeting will reinforce their role in society,' he said. Mohd Na'im also called for modernizing pondok education while preserving its core values. Proposed reforms include enhancing teachers' understanding of global issues, exposing students to technology and foreign languages, and improving institutional safety and cooperation. 'UMRAN serves as a bridge between Islamic jurisprudence and governance, ensuring ulama's voices influence national policies and development remains syariah-guided,' he said. - Bernama
