MTA, EGTB Drive Marine Conservation Through ‘Ghost Net & Beach Cleanup' Campaign In Perak

LUMUT, July 19 (Bernama) -- The 'Ghost Net & Beach Cleanup' campaign held around Teluk Nipah, Pulau Pangkor, and the waters of Pulau Sembilan has successfully raised public awareness of the dangers of abandoned fishing nets to marine life while contributing to the preservation of the marine ecosystem. The initiative, organised by the Malaysian Takaful Association (MTA) in collaboration with Etiqa General Takaful Berhad (EGTB) and supported by the Nature Ocean Advocate Society (NOAS), Universiti Sultan Azlan Shah (USAS) and the Perak State Parks Corporation, involved over 80 volunteers, including 50 students, 12 certified divers, 11 NOAS professional divers and representatives from relevant agencies. MTA chief executive officer Mohd Radzuan Mohamed said the campaign was aimed at raising public awareness on the importance of preserving the environment, particularly the marine ecosystem, which was under growing threat due to pollution. 'This campaign reflects the Takaful industry's commitment to environmental sustainability, in line with the Hijrah27 Transformation Plan under Strategic Thrust 8 (Sustainability & ESG), as part of efforts to support Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14: Life Below Water, which emphasises the conservation of marine resources. 'As a value-based industry, the Takaful sector not only protects people but also the environment. We hope this initiative will inspire more parties to incorporate sustainability into their operations,' he said when met by Bernama here today. Also present at the programme were Etiqa General Takaful Berhad chief executive officer Shahrul Azuan Mohamed, USAS vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Wan Sabri Wan Yusof and USAS deputy vice-chancellor (Student Affairs and Industry Networking) Prof Dr Shamsul Jamili Yeop. Mohd Radzuan said MTA, in collaboration with its strategic partners, would continue the conservation programme at other locations as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. He said the programme, which was a continuation of the 'Echoes of the Deep' photo exhibition launched at the AICB Knowledge Centre in Kuala Lumpur last month, had successfully removed 328 kilogrammes (kg) of ghost nets from the seabed off Pulau Sembilan. He added that more than 125 kg of rubbish, including food and drink packaging and discarded items, were collected along a one-kilometre (km) stretch of Teluk Nipah beach.

Echoes Of The Deep Exhibition Raises Public Awareness On Marine Life Protection

KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 (Bernama) -- The Echoes of the Deep: Pulau Sembilan Reborn photo exhibition serves as a creative platform to raise awareness of the dangers of ghost nets and advocate for the protection of marine ecosystems. The month-long exhibition, organised by the Malaysian Takaful Association (MTA), begins today at the Financial Services Library (FSL), AICB Centre of Excellence, here, featuring 30 underwater photographs captured around Pulau Sembilan, Perak. According to MTA chief executive officer Mohd Radzuan Mohamed, the island was selected as ghost nets found on the seabed in its marine-rich waters pose a serious threat to coral reefs and marine ecosystems. 'This exhibition is not merely a visual narrative but also a call to action involving cooperation from all parties, including the state government, universities, associations and industry, in efforts to preserve the environment and protect the ocean,' he told Bernama after launching the exhibition here today. The exhibition, organised in collaboration with Etiqa General Takaful Berhad (EGTB), the Nature & Oceanography Advocate Society (NOAS) and Universiti Sultan Azlan Shah (USAS), runs until July 30 and is open to the public free of charge. Mohd Radzuan said MTA also organised beach and seabed clean-up activities aimed at equipping youth and volunteers with knowledge and awareness on marine conservation. 'The beach clean-up programme was carried out to remove ghost nets from the seabed, with 50 university students sent to Pulau Pangkor as part of efforts to raise awareness among the younger generation on the need to better care for the marine ecosystem,' he said. Meanwhile, EGTB chief executive officer Shahrul Azuan Mohamed, in a statement, said the company remained committed to environmental sustainability through the implementation of various programmes. 'In line with Etiqa's vision, 'To Make the World a Better Place', the company has, since 2022, supported ocean protection through three marine conservation projects in collaboration with marine experts.

TANJONG MALIM: The Malaysian Takaful Association (MTA) has contributed RM50,000 to the Ministry of Higher Education's Prihatin Fund to support the families and students of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) affected by the recent bus crash in Gerik. 'We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. On behalf of the takaful industry, we extend our heartfelt condolences to all the families affected. 'This is a moment for unity. While we cannot undo what has happened, this contribution reflects our compassion and our commitment to serving the community,' he told Bernama at the UPSI students' bus tragedy memorial held at the Tuanku Canselor Hall last night. 'Of that amount, 10 percent came from MTA and takaful companies directly involved in the industry. This reflects our commitment to the core takaful principle of mutual assistance, built on a foundation of community spirit and solidarity,' he said. On June 9, 15 UPSI students were killed after a chartered bus traveling from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university's main campus in Tanjung Malim overturned following a collision with a Perodua Alza along the East-West Highway.
